#OnceUponATimeInPoland - Bobolice

Bobolice Castle, located in the southern region of #Silesia, was built in the 14th century and played a key role in protecting 🇵🇱's western border. But what castle would be complete without its own haunting legend about brotherly bonds tested by a scandalous love triangle? 💔

The owner of Bobolice Castle had a brother who lived in the nearby castle of Mirów, both of which were connected by an underground tunnel where the two hid their treasure, guarded by a terrible witch. One day, one of the siblings brought a beautiful woman back from his wartime expedition. He soon discovered that his beloved was pursuing his brother's affection - angry and upset, he killed his rival and trapped the woman behind a wall in the castle basement. Some say that the girl's ghost appears in the castle even today... 👻

Check out a bird's-eye vew of the castle here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwNhJkdPoJ0

Today marks the 81st anniversary of the German Nazi invasion of Poland and the outbreak of World War II on September 1, 1939.

#WeRemember those who valiantly fought and died in defense of our homeland. 🕯️

On September 1, 1939, the first shots of #WW2 were fired as the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein attacked the Westerplatte peninsula in the port of #Gdańsk.

Poles hoped to hold out until an offensive against Germany was mounted in the west but with the Soviet invasion from the east on September 17 🇵🇱's fate was sealed as planned under the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.

This evening, a commemorative logo for the #Solidarity movement's 40th anniversary was displayed on our Embassy's facade.

The legacy of Solidarity transcends the borders of Poland – it is a universal call against totalitarian regimes that silence their citizens and deny them their civil rights.

May we never take for granted the freedoms that we enjoy.

The Polish diaspora (“Polonia”) and U.S. civil society as a whole supported #Solidarity from its inception in 1980 and after the communists sought to crush it by introducing martial law in 1981.

Not just the United States, but the entire world watched with anticipation as the events of the 1980s in Poland unfolded.

Solidarity's influence would eventually lead to the intensification of anti-communist movements throughout the Eastern Bloc.

On August 31, 1980, following the Gdańsk Shipyard strikes that sought labor reform and greater civil rights, the communists gave in to the workers' demands.

The August Accords, signed in the name of #Solidarity by the trade union’s leader, Lech Wałęsa, who worked as an electrician at the shipyard, led to the establishment of the first non-state-controlled trade union in the Eastern Bloc. 🇵🇱✌

Celebrating Polish Aviation Day on August 28, the delegation of the Defense Attaché Bureau of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Washington, D.C. paid tribute to the American airmen who volunteered for the Polish-Bolshevik War of 1920.

Seventeen American airmen took part in the Polish-Bolshevik War and volunteered to serve in the Polish army. The initiator of the action was Merian C. Cooper, who initially managed to recruit seven pilots and one observer, and gradually more joined them.

They all served in the 7th air squadron, named Kościuszkowska.
Three of them died and were buried at the Łyczakowski Cemetery in Lviv. The others returned to the USA, where their graves are now located. Only Merian C. Cooper's ashes were scattered over the ocean at his will.

Flowers were laid on August 26th and August 27th on the graves of the following pilots: G. Crawford (Brooklyn, NY), K. Shrewsbury (Arlington, VA), E. Corsi (Staten Island, NY), H. Rorison (Wilmington, NC), K. Murray (Arlington) , VA), I. Maitland (Pleasant Hill, PA), and T. Garlick (Sparkill, NY).

General information

The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Washington, DC was established as one of Poland's first foreign missions after Poland regained independence in 1918. The Embassy's four-story building was designed by renowned architect George Oakley Totten for Mary Foote Henderson, who invested a substantial portion of her husband Senator John Henderson’s fortune to make this portion of 16th Street the most magnificent avenue in the U.S. capital. Completed in 1910, the building is an exquisite example of early 20th-century Beaux Art design. The government of Poland purchased the building shortly after the U.S. and Poland established diplomatic relations on April 16, 1919. The Polish Legation officially opened in 1920. Much of the English Renaissance style interior looks as it did a century ago: The white limestone structure features double-hung windows interspersed among balconies and porches in a harmonious blend of 17th and 18th century French and English styles. Works by Polish painters, including Jacek Malczewski and Wojciech Falat are displayed throughout the Embassy’s salons, and a Steinway grand piano used by Polish statesman and pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski, adorns the Blue Salon. A lovely asset to Washington, DC’s architectural wealth, the Embassy houses unique Polish cultural treasures along with rich historical traditions. The Embassy organizes a wide variety of cultural events, panel discussions, conferences and hosts numerous official delegations visiting Washington, DC from Poland. Informacja prasowa USAGM [U.S. Korbońska pracowała najpierw w Nowym Jorku, a później w Waszyngtonie, używając pseudonimu Zofia Orłowska, aby ochronić swoją rodzinę i przyjaciół w Polsce przed represjami. Globalnych Mediów i Głos Ameryki będą zawsze z wdzięcznością pamiętać o Zofii Korbońskiej i wszystkich dziennikarzach Głosu, dawnych i obecnych, którzy pracowali i pracują na rzecz wolności i demokracji. USAGM honors VOA Polish broadcaster Zofia Korbońska August 16, 2020 USAGM honors VOA Polish broadcaster Zofia Korbońska WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today marks the 10th anniversary of the passing of Zofia Korbońska, a member of the anti-Nazi resistance movement who later immigrated to the United States as a political refugee from Soviet Communism and long served the Voice of America (VOA) Polish service. Born in Warsaw in 1912, Korbońska (née Ristau) was a member of the Polish Underground Army, which fought against the Nazis. On a daily basis, she risked her life writing and coding secret shortwave radio transmissions sent from Poland to the Polish government-in-exile in London. A number of her dispatches that reached the free world were broadcast back into occupied Europe by the BBC. They broke news about Gestapo murders of the Polish intelligentsia, Nazi extermination of Polish Jews, and medical experiments on women prisoners at concentration camp. In addition to her clandestine radio work, Korbońska was also a partner in the work of her husband, Stefan Korboński, the leader of Poland’s anti-Nazi civil resistance and the last head of the Polish Underground State. (He was later honored in 1980 by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations for taking great risks to save Jews.) Shortly after the end of the Second World War, Korbońska and Korboński were arrested in Poland by the NKVD Soviet secret police but were released after several lengthy interrogations. Fearing another arrest, they escaped to Sweden in 1947, hiding in a ship transporting coal. After they found refuge in the United States, Korbońska was hired by VOA in 1948 on the recommendation of former U.S. Ambassador to Poland Arthur Bliss Lane. She worked first in New York and later in Washington, D.C., using the pen name “Zofia Orłowska” to protect her family and friends in Poland. She continued to serve VOA for over three decades, writing and recording occasional programs in the 1980s even after her retirement. In 2006, Korbońska was awarded the title of honorary citizen of the capital city of Warsaw. She also received from the president of Poland one of the country’s most prestigious civilian awards. She died in Washington, D.C. on August 16, 2010. Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski, National Security Advisor to President Jimmy Carter, delivered a eulogy at her funeral, in which he stated, “Zofia Korbońska – heroically brave in battle, prudent in political exile – was an example of what a dedicated and successful service in a great cause entails.” The U.S. Agency for Global Media and VOA will always honor Zofia Korbońska and all of their journalists, past and present, whose reporting has advanced freedom and democracy. Here is how the wife of the former Polish Ambassador in Washington Ryszard Schnepf, Dorota Wysocka-Schnepf, interviews the new Israeli ambassador in Poland. She leads him to state that Poland is anti-Semitic. He denies. Great and sad entertainment. This also hints at how Ryszard Schnepf "represented" Polish interests in the USA, during his tenure.
