The name “Tivoli North” was created by the late Dr. Rafael Siguenza and the founding members to refer to the commercial corridor north of the Tivoli, mainly along 14th Street from Park Road to Shepherd Street, NW in Columbia Heights

Street Beautification Tivoli North strives to create a welcoming environment in the commercial corridor for businesses, residents, and visitors alike. * Tivoli North hosts Community Clean-ups every month from April to September. Business owners, government agencies, community leaders, and residents spend the morning beautifying the neighborhood by ridding it of garbage and litter, while getting to know one another. * Tivoli North also coordinates with other non-profits in the area, such as the Columbia Heights Shaw Family Support Cooperative, to host Green Team Initiatives so that the area will receive daily street sweeps to keep the neighborhood clean. * Tivoli North has also dedicated time to working with government agencies and local businesses to sponsor tree boxes and flower beds in the area, festive street decorations, and promotional signage to maintain a uniform and beautiful street corridor. Safety As in any big city, safety is a major concern. Tivoli North facilitates and fosters productive communication between business owners and the Metropolitan Police Department for the benefit of the entire community. * Tivoli North started a bilingual “Call 911” campaign in the neighborhood to help the international community who lives and shops in the region know what number to call for emergencies and to highlight a need for a regional “Call 911” campaign via radio or television. * Tivoli North also held informational meetings to inform area restaurants about the ABRA-sponsored reimbursable detail program to have more police along the commercial corridor during peak night-time hours. * Tivoli North holds periodic general meetings for business owners and the community to express concerns where safety has been a primary theme. The product of these meetings is to create plans of action and to draw MPD’s attention to specific concerns of our members. Our organization always seeks suggestions for improving safety in the area, and works collaboratively with its members, neighborhood groups, local non-profits, and MPD to come up with sustainable crime prevention programs. Marketing Each of our members has a unique story to tell, and their small businesses stand as testaments to the American Dream. * Tivoli North provides a forum for our members to share their stories with their customers, and to promote the services and goods available in our commercial corridor. * The online web directory provides a digital marketing resource to help bring our small businesses into the digital age and to provide a faster, quicker method for consumers to learn about the store hours and services our members provide. Our goal is to increase online visibility of all the businesses in the corridor. * Tivoli North has hosts the Taste of Tivoli North, at the Columbia Heights Day Festival, to showcase the delicious cuisine our member businesses offer to the residents of Columbia Heights, and tables at other events to promote our small businesses. Also, Tivoli North sponsored FiestaDC, the DC Latino festival that has been a tradition since 1971. * Tivoli North encourages businesses to improve their image by participating in community events. Small Business Development Small businesses are the backbone of this country, and Tivoli North recognizes the unique challenges that small businesses face – from lack of resources to lack of time. * We host specialized business seminars, tailored to the needs and schedules of our members, to help owners learn best practices and new techniques in their industry. * We work with renowned industry consultants, like celebrity makeup artist Erwin Gomez, to provide bilingual seminars that address concerns unique to our members to help them grow and succeed in their business venture. * We also work with other non-profits and government agencies to inform our members of resources available, such as façade improvement grants or subsidized accounting, graphic design, and merchandise retailing. Community Involvement Tivoli North follows a holistic approach to business and community development. We believe the best way to accomplish positive change is to work collaboratively with all community groups, government agencies, private business entities, and neighbors. We welcome creative ideas for change and innovative solutions to community problems and are willing to work to accomplish mutually beneficial results.
