Did you know that trees help prevent erosion caused by falling rain water? Their leaves catch the drops which then evaporate. The tree’s roots also take in water and create conditions in the soil that help to promote infiltration. Great job, trees!

The Essentials for Traveling in Bear Country, Alaska Department of Fish and Game

When you are out recreating on our National Forests; do you know what to do if you were to come face to face with a bear? First, give them their space. Never approach or crowd bears. Never surprise a bear. Make noise, talk loudly, or sing to let them know you’re there. Refrain from feeding bears and keep food, garbage, and other attractants out of reach. The most important thing is to stay calm! Talk, wave your arms, and keep eye contact. Never run! For more information visit http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=livingwithbears.bearcountry.

Allegheny National Forest, located in Northern Pennsylvania, was established in 1923. Its beginnings were challenged by young trees trying to grow among logged hillsides. Today, the forest supplies around one-third of the world’s supply of black cherry furniture veneer. There are also numerous oil and gas wells located throughout the forest. Like this post if you want to visit or have already visited Allegheny National Forest! It’s definitely on my to-do list.

Happy World Wildlife Day! The Tongass National Forest in Alaska is home to a wide variety of wildlife. All five species of Pacific salmon, brown bears, wolves, and Sitka black-tailed deer are just a few of the animals that reside here. Majestic cedars, spruce, and hemlock trees make perfect homes for birds such as bald eagles, northern goshawks, trumpeter swans, and marbled murrelets. Like if you want to or already have visited Tongass! (Photos by: Eagle- Carey Case, Bear- Don MacDougall, Eagle and Salmon- Joe Serio)

Today I want to tell you about my black bear friends! While it is widely known that bears hibernate, they actually won’t go into hibernation until they are using more energy than they can find. In other words, once the food supply is scarce. To prepare for the winter, bears are very active in the fall hunting for food. They eat and drink almost nonstop! For the bears that do hibernate, they will make a den in a hollow tree or log, under the root mass of a tree, or in rock crevices. During the slumber their body temperature, pulse rate, and respiration all drop. This is where the fat stored from the summer and fall comes in to provide energy. Happy slumber, friends!

Next up are my buddies the foxes! They are hardly disturbed by cold temperatures. Foxes will develop a thicker winter coat that allows them to continue their regular routine. Most of the winter is devoted to hunting or foraging for them. They will also mate and raise offspring throughout the cold weather. Dens are not necessary for them until they do start mating so it’s not uncommon to see a fox sleeping in the open beneath a blanket of snow! Silly guys!
