PeerForward honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by asking ourselves "Life's most persistent and urgent question... 'What are you doing for others?'"

At PeerForward, our staff, educators, and volunteers fight for education justice by empowering low-income youth to transform the educational system, level the playing field for all students regardless of income level, and lift each other up to college and career success.

Our movement of highly influential, low-income youth reminds us that everyone has the power to do for others.

What helps you find the power to do for others?

General information

Formerly known as College Summit, PeerForward started in 1993, with four students at a teen center in the basement of a low-income housing project in Washington, D.C. The Center's Director, J.B. Schramm, had worked as an Academic Advisor at Harvard while in graduate school, and had seen that Admissions Officers were hungry for low-income talent. But every year at the Teen Center, he saw dozens of such kids ready for college and... not going. He was reminded of his own inner-city high school in Denver where – except for the very few with top grades and scores – low-income students didn’t go to college. The students with mid-tier credentials, many of whom could have done well at college, lacked the “know-how” and support senior year that the students whose parents had gone to college enjoyed. Tired of seeing students "graduate" from his teen center to the street, Schramm became determined to help admissions offices see students the way he saw them. He enlisted the best writing instructor he’d seen in graduate school, and the finest urban youth worker he knew. Together they designed a system to help bright, low-income students who, with the right support during the post-secondary transition, could propel their lives (and communities) in a positive direction.

College Summit is now PeerForward

PeerForward's mission is to unleash the power of positive peer influence to transform the lives of youth living in low-income communities by connecting them to college and careers. Formerly known as College Summit, PeerForward taps a readily available resource found in every high school - influential students - to improve postsecondary success outcomes.

We train and support teams of students on the planning and admissions process for higher education. Those teams of students return to their high schools and run campaigns to guide and assist their peers on the path to college. Our partner high schools show 26% higher rates of financial aid applications when compared to similar schools, and see their college enrollment increase by an average of 20%.

Racial inequality is a longstanding problem in the United States. Nowhere is it more obvious than in our education systems. Change has been a long time coming is still slow-moving, but it is happening. There are institutions out there that have taken the initiative to bring about this change by offering African American students who are headed to college the resources they need to succeed. Colleges and institutions, like Georgetown University's Georgetown Experimental Medical Studies Program, which assists bright young black men and women who are entering medical school, and the National CARES Mentoring Movement - National Office, which has assisted more than 200,000 students by setting them up with mentors to help them successfully navigate their chosen paths, are not just waiting for change, they are creating it. Some of the other 30 institutions on this list who are making a huge impact are: National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) Penn State Graduation Alliance Starr Commonwealth Beyond 12 The University of Mississippi - Ole Miss Year Up PeerForward The City University of New York University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill University of Maryland, Baltimore County Thurgood Marshall College Fund And, coming in at the number one spot is UNCF, which has helped more than half-a-million African American students achieve their educational dreams! A huge shout out to these and all of the institutions who appear in this ranking. And thank you for being the voice of change for African American students across the nation! Much love, peace, and health. 💙 Mi tío (Rubén) está luchando en una guerra contra el COVID-19 Y que necesita someterse a una cirugía debido a que tiene un quiste en el fémur.
