“It’s okay not to have all the answers ✨”

We caught up with alumna and influencer, Sara St. Juste last week to get some much-needed advice after a confusing week. We’re so glad because as a University of Miami School of Law student, she’s learned a lot.

-
“The advice I would give to a current high school senior is to not let yourself get down all because you don’t have all the answers to life yet. 9 times out of 10, you won’t know the answers. As a student in my first year of law school, I STILL don’t have all the answers and it’s okay. 👌

Give yourself time to learn, grow, and figure out your divine purpose in life 💫. Don’t force yourself into a career decision until it feels just right for you. Allow yourself to learn from others who have navigated the journey of college and set out a plan for your life. Enjoy life, stay focused, and let your goals guide you into a career path that is just right for you.”
-

We needed to hear that! Find the path that’s right for you, Peer Leaders. Thanks, Sara!

Looking Good Seahawks!

What a way to kick off another recruitment season for Broward College Peer Leaders! More than twenty of our finest Seahawks joined our Coaches for a Public Speaking session where they practiced their elevator pitches for joining a PeerForward Team at Broward College.

A special shout-out to our Seahawk Leader, Miranda Marcias, who mentioned “The more I come to these sessions the more confident I feel.” 🤩

We love to see it! For more information about our PeerForward College team at Broward College, be sure to visit their team page @seahawkpeerleaders on Instagram.

We made history! Not only did Americans vote in record numbers, but we also elected candidates that represent firsts in so many ways.

We elected a President with a public college education. We elected a Vice President with an #HBCU education.

We elected a woman. We elected a South Asian woman. We elected a Black woman. We helped make HERstory.

We mean it when we say there is a college for everyone! As you’re applying to college or graduate school, remember that it is a step towards a greater future.

Shamar Barker is motivated by his challenges 💪🏾

It’s time for another check-in! We caught up with Shamar, who’s currently a Junior at Binghamton University, about what has kept him motivated this semester. He gave us some real #mondaymotivation about taking risks and manifesting success.

👇

“My motivation for continuing to pursue my degree is the challenge of the process. I know what it feels like to go after something that seems unattainable and then achieve it, so I would say that feeling alone keeps me moving forward.

For all the seniors applying to college, go out-of-state if you want! Trust me, this is coming from someone who didn’t have a dime to go away but still managed to have his entire college experience away from home, the best decision I ever made!”

Don't limit yourself! If you want it, it's yours.

Don’t rush yourself - ✋😤

Marcus, who currently attends Clark Atlanta University, has some #mondaymotivation for you all, don’t sleep on it!

We recently asked our Friendship Tech Prep alumni what advice he has for Peer Leaders applying to college.

First, I would tell them to not be afraid to go far to accomplish their goals. It’s really easy to get stuck in your comfort zone by staying close to home, but the experience of being away will help you in so many ways.

Second, don’t stress over the small things. It’s important to remember the bigger picture.

Finally, I would tell them to not rush themselves. We’re at an age in which we try to fast track to our goals in life and all that does is cause unnecessary stress. So really try to slow down sometimes & enjoy the days for what they are.

Enjoy the days for what they are. THIS MAN PREACHING! You can bet we’re listening. Thanks for checking in, Marc!

There are talented, influential young people everywhere willing to lead change locally and nationally. Our nation needs them now more than ever if the American dream is to be shared by all.

Our Peer Leaders have demonstrated amazing resiliency, creativity, and courage in the face of the pandemic. It's their spirit that continually inspires our CEO, Gary Z. Linnen to embrace the unexpected. You can read more about it in his recent Forbes article!

We manifest success over here! 🌟

Mya can tell you all about that. Swipe 👉 to see how she manifested her success all the way to Wayne State University!

We checked in with our amazing DEPSA alumni to hear about her transition from high school valedictorian to college freshman this week and she dropped some real wisdom below!

“The end of my senior year was a big surprise & adjustment. So I tried to make the most of it for the first semester of college. By keeping the bigger picture in mind for my future! Which is to become a doctor to help those of medical needs. I have done that by being balanced and proactive. To others, I would advise you all to manifest! The power of the tongue is so powerful. Start your day off with compliments & acknowledging the good you have done this far on your journey! Good luck to all! Wear your mask & remember to vote!!”

We couldn’t agree more (future Dr.) Mya! Give yourself a compliment today and acknowledge how far you’ve come on your journey ✨.

Pandemic Increases Importance of Filing Early for Financial Aid

The FAFSA offers financial aid on a first-come, first-served basis. With many families suffering from jobs losses and income shifts in 2020, using 2019 tax information may not reflect your family's current financial situation.

That's why it's incredibly important for students to complete their FAFSA early this year, so they have enough time to make an appeal for additional aid from their college or university.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/25/your-money/fafsa-colleges-coronavirus.html

The new FAFSA form, which is out on Thursday, requires last year’s tax data. But families that have lost income this year may need to take extra steps to qualify for help.

“I learned to spend more time with myself” 👏👏👏

Quemoni’s check-in is definitely our #mondaymotivation. Our Cobble Hill High School Alumni, Quemoni told us about her first month as a Buffalo State 🐯 and how she’s learned to check-in with herself and others.

I learned to start spending more time with myself and with others because life is short - so enjoy it while it’s here!

My first month at Buffalo State was stressful. I’m still trying to get everything together and settle in. Other than that I got it! And I’m pretty sure it will get easier on the way ✨

You definitely got this, Quemoni! It will get easier because you’re always getting better 💫

We are all capable of changing the world 🌎

Our PeerForward Alumni, @officialjerrynoel reminded us of that. Jerry, a former Northeast HS Peer Leader, is now in his second year at Penn State pursuing his degree through #virtuallearning.

He said something worth taking with you into the weekend.

“It's a small world. The things we do can affect those all around us when we least expect it! As a result of the pandemic, I've learned to cherish the moments in life—to cherish the conversations and the times spent together with my friends and family.”

Cherish your loved ones, understand your impact, remember in this small world - we’re all in this together 🤝

General information

Formerly known as College Summit, PeerForward started in 1993, with four students at a teen center in the basement of a low-income housing project in Washington, D.C. The Center's Director, J.B. Schramm, had worked as an Academic Advisor at Harvard while in graduate school, and had seen that Admissions Officers were hungry for low-income talent. But every year at the Teen Center, he saw dozens of such kids ready for college and... not going. He was reminded of his own inner-city high school in Denver where – except for the very few with top grades and scores – low-income students didn’t go to college. The students with mid-tier credentials, many of whom could have done well at college, lacked the “know-how” and support senior year that the students whose parents had gone to college enjoyed. Tired of seeing students "graduate" from his teen center to the street, Schramm became determined to help admissions offices see students the way he saw them. He enlisted the best writing instructor he’d seen in graduate school, and the finest urban youth worker he knew. Together they designed a system to help bright, low-income students who, with the right support during the post-secondary transition, could propel their lives (and communities) in a positive direction.

College Summit is now PeerForward

PeerForward's mission is to unleash the power of positive peer influence to transform the lives of youth living in low-income communities by connecting them to college and careers. Formerly known as College Summit, PeerForward taps a readily available resource found in every high school - influential students - to improve postsecondary success outcomes.

We train and support teams of students on the planning and admissions process for higher education. Those teams of students return to their high schools and run campaigns to guide and assist their peers on the path to college. Our partner high schools show 26% higher rates of financial aid applications when compared to similar schools, and see their college enrollment increase by an average of 20%.
