EPA Finalizes NAAQS for Particulate Matter | US EPA

I am pleased to join West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, Secretary Caperton and Congressman Mooney virtually today to announce EPA’s final decision to retain NAAQS for particulate matter.

The U.S. has some of the lowest fine particulate matter levels in the world and, under the Trump Administration, we have achieved a 7% reduction in PM2.5 even as our nation experienced a period of booming economic growth.

Over the last four years we have redesignated 57 nonattainment areas to attainment, meaning cleaner air, improved health outcomes, and greater economic opportunities for cities and communities across the country.

Today’s announcement maintains the NAAQS standards set under the Obama/Biden administration and will help keep our nation on its path of cleaner, healthier air for all.

Congratulations to Gitanjali Rao on being selected as Time’s first-ever Kid of The Year. EPA recognized Gitanjali’s brilliance in 2017 when she was selected to receive the President’s Environmental Youth Award for her project to detect lead in drinking water.

Today, the Richard Nixon Foundation will open a beautiful new outdoor exhibition, "The President and the Planet: Richard Nixon and the Environment," an in-depth look at the continued impact of the historic environmental initiatives of the Nixon administration at 10:30 AM Pacific/1:30 PM Eastern.

The exhibition will be officially dedicated online today, one day shy of the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Great to meet with our state partners at Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality to tour multiple EPA Brownfields projects in Little Rock. EPA’s work here has revitalized these previously contaminated sites, transforming them into livable communities. Under President Trump, EPA has awarded $900,000 in Brownfields funding to the State of Arkansas. All of these grants can potentially be used to fund improvements in #OpportunityZones.

Today, I joined American Airlines to see first hand the process they use to keep their fleet clean and passengers safe from COVID-19, which includes the use of EPA registered disinfectants.

EPA Administrator Wheeler Delivers Address at 3rd Annual America Recycles Summit | US EPA

Earlier today, I announced EPA’s National Recycling Goal to increase the national recycling rate to 50% by 2030. Reaching this goal will not be easy, but it is important. #Recycle50by30

EPA’s draft National Recycling Strategy focuses on three key objectives:
1) Reduction of contamination in the recycling system
2) Increasing processing efficiency
3) Strengthening markets for recycled materials

These objectives cover critical areas that, if improved, will help achieve the National goal of recycling 50% by 2030, creating jobs while protecting our natural resources.

We know that recycling is one of the most widely available ways to have a positive impact on the environment. As a nation, we are blessed with abundant resources, and the EPA continues to work to protect the value of those resources so that future generations can enjoy them.

It is estimated that over 76 billion pounds of food is wasted every year. Our partners, like Walt Disney World, are working to achieve a 50% reduction of food waste by 2030. Today we are at Disney World to see first-hand some of the processes Disney puts in place to capture and recover wasted food, helping reduce their carbon footprint and serving the surrounding community.

Thanks to all our 2030 U.S. Food Loss and Waste Champions, like Disney, for the work you do to divert wasted food from landfills thereby reducing the 3rd largest source of human-generated methane emission in the U.S.
