Meet Joey! He is an absolute delight and ready to find his family. Joey has quickly become a favorite of many of the staff and volunteers at the Humane Rescue Alliance. He is an energetic, 2-year-old pup and has been working on his basic manners in foster care. He'd do well with a family and other pets in the home that can match his energy and excitement. Joey is happiest when he's cuddled up next to his people or jumping in the car for a ride and to look out the window.

Think Joey is the dog for you? Learn more at humanerescuealliance.org/adopt.

Can't adopt but still want to help? Sign up to foster large dogs like Joey at humanerescuealliance.org/foster.

In April, Marcus came to HRA from Southern Pines Animal Shelter in Mississippi. Before arriving in DC, he recently had his leg amputated due to a large infected wound, and he had a whole community cheering him on as he waited for his new home in DC. Just last week, Marcus was adopted and is living it up with his new family!

Marcus is just one animal we've been able to save thanks to our transport network. With these partnerships, we not only help animals find new families but also help free up space in crowded shelters.

Happy Fourth of July! As we celebrate, we want to remind you to think of your four-legged friends and their stress levels as the fireworks displays start. Here are a few suggestions for how to keep them safe and reduce their stress:

Keep pets indoors: The safest place for your pet is at home, not in a crowded, unfamiliar, and noisy place. The combination of too many people and loud fireworks could make your pet panic and desperately seek shelter.

Create a safe place in your home: Giving your pet a safe haven like a covered crate with the door open in the innermost part of your house can help them get away from external noises and commotion.

Ensure ID tags are up-to-date: Make sure your animals are wearing ID tags on their collars with up-to-date contact information. If your pet is microchipped, double-check that your information is current. If your animal does escape, file a lost report with your local animal care and control.

Shut all doors and windows: Panicked animals can easily break through screens. Dogs can often open doors by jumping when scared, especially doors with lever-type handles. Secure doors with a bolt lock or chain latch.

Why did the turtle cross the road? The short answer is to lay eggs!

Our wildlife manager Lauren Crossed explains why turtles are seen on the road and how you can help them.

The short answer is to lay eggs. We have seen an increase in concerned callers, worried about turtles being seen in areas that they are not normally seen, such as roadways, which is not a safe location for any animal, let alone a notoriously slow-moving one.Turtles will travel to familiar areas to ...

Last week, we asked for your help. We were out of space in our shelter and needed to get as many animals into homes as possible. You all answered our call in the biggest way.

In just one week, over 150 animals were adopted and joined their new families. Because of your support through adoption, fostering, and spreading the word, we are able to continue our life-saving work for both the animals and the people in our community.

Our Story

The Washington Humane Society and the Washington Animal Rescue League have each served the animals and people of the District of Columbia and the National Capitol region for over a century. Now these two great forces for animal protection have come together to form an even more powerful organization: the Humane Rescue Alliance. With the creation of the Humane Rescue Alliance, we’re combining our proficiency and knowledge in all aspects of animal care, from providing quality, affordable medical services to creating families with each adoption. Most importantly, we’re here to tenaciously protect and advocate for the animals in our community, and support and celebrate people’s love and compassion for them. We are the Humane Rescue Alliance.

Dear HRA: Your "virtual" adoption process is so slow and tedious and impractical for normal people leading normal lives on tight skeds during a pandemic .. it hurts your animals. It is so cumbersome I feel it dissuades adoption. And WHY are you doing this? I can walk through Gaithersburg, Prince George, just about ANY animal shelter or event and look at pets real-time and take them home same day. IF PEOPLE CAN PRODUCE A VACCINATION CARD, THEY SHOULD BE ALLOWED IN TO THE SHELTERS. ______ And HOW can one interact with and sense a pet's response, when the animal does not understand the concept of video? They cannot sense a warm, loving person at the other end of the camera and respond accordingly. And it is crazy to make them wait in the cruelty of your shelter and cages, or in some home that will kick them out... WEEKS... whilst the prospective parents get discouraged and move on. I wanted another friend / sibling for my cat NOW. He is lonesome and craving other animal companionship NOW. Not in a month or two weeks. And when I drove up to your shelter yesterday I was told, despite a vaccination card, I would have to go online.. so I went online and waited TWO HOURS ... and NOTHING. I am urgently putting my earnings back in order and attending to other parts of life and church and so on - and then parents with younger children have soccor and etc all weekends or evenings ... we cannot sit online and wait for you all day long. But YOU TAKE AWAY THE INTERACTION BETWEEN PROSPECTIVE PET AND HUMAN. VIRTUAL IS FOR YOU, NOT FOR US OR FOR YOUR ANIMALS. YOU SLOW OR PREVENT THEIR ADOPTION. FOR ONE CAT -- AND MOST OF YOUR ANIMALS, LET'S FACE IT, ARE WONDERFUL, BUT HARD-TO-ADOPT, either older or with infirmity, so this is HUGE to them, to be forced to WAIT, and you are a 'kill' shelter, are you not?? -- I WAS TOLD 3 OTHERS WERE IN FRONT OF ME AND I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT BEHIND THEM. But that's not how humans 'shop' for anything. We will move on, because our child or our other animal child wants an adoption NOW, or this is the timing based on other things, to adopt NOW ... and that poor animal will suffer and/or die, because you made the process so difficult. They do not 'see' us. SO 'VIRTUAL MEET AND GREET' IS STUPID. IS NOT BASED ON ANIMAL PSYCHOLOGY. HOLD AN EVENT AND BRING THEM ALL THERE, FOR EX... WE CAN ALL GO INTO MALLS NOW WITHOUT MASKS, SO WHY CAN WE NOT GO INTO AN EVENT WITHOUT MASKS? #hra #animaladoption

Good morning, just thought of sharing this here in hopes to find anew home and/or financial support for Melanie.
Hello. Your website says you are offering vaccines by appointment only but your phone message and the email response I got say that you are not. Can you please clarify?
We adopted our Oreo the tripod from you on August 21, 2015. He was fostered by Echo Kief through Lost Dog by way of HRA. People thought we had lost our minds adopting him as he was terrified of everything. Now he is the happiest dog!! Best decision ever. He tolerates his sibling who was rescued as well.

My dear sweet Bubba has been missing since Tuesday, April 20, 2021 from Riverdale, MD. He is a large black on black tabby (very unusual) though from a distance he looks just like a black cat. White patches on his belly and chest, white whiskers, and his back toes are white. He’s about 13yo and 12 pounds, left ear-tipped. I miss him terribly and am worried sick. Please contact me day or night if you think you have seen him. We are on the 5800 block of Taylor Road. 💔🙏
Ellie (pka Mystery) lives in Colorado now - but she is still the love of our lives! Thank you Humane Rescue Alliance. ❤️
By the way...for cat's sake...please don't forget to warn folks to throw away the easter lilies!
Me and my husband have been reaching out to your office asking about adopting our son's dog Winter, put up for adoption without warning him, in DC. Please contact us ASAP.
