(172)

humanerescuealliance.org In July 2019 the Humane Rescue Alliance and St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center of Madison, New Jersey, merged to create the first regional, community-based, multi-state animal welfare organization in the nation. The combined group will provide direct rescue and care of animals in need, cruelty investigations and local animal control services, robust regional community support programs that allow pets to stay with their families, and a premier transport program that invests in partner communities to solve pet overpopulation sustainably and nationwide.

Mission: We protect animals and support people’s love and compassion for them.

Asta says, "How you doin'?" This three-month-old kitten loves to run laps through living room obstacle courses, scheming about ways to climb on your lap and nuzzle your face, and finding the most comfortable sleeping positions. He is so friendly and playful and would love to be in a home with another animal friend.

Learn more about Asta and schedule a virtual meet and greet at humanerescuealliance.org/adopt.

This is Tito, a 1-year-old sweetheart that just wants to lounge on the couch and receive belly rubs. He loves to play with anyone or any dog he meets. He's also very excited to meet new people, giving people hugs and investigating grocery bags. While he's so friendly, he does need to learn some manners. But with a personality like his, it'll be a breeze.

Learn more about Tito and schedule a virtual meet and greet at humanerescuealliance.org/adopt.

Bat conservation has made a big step forward thanks to four Girl Scout troops. The girls in troops #44046, #44047, #44051, and #44082 decided that the best way to bring attention to the endangered bat population was to name the little brown bat the official mammal of Washington, D.C.

Their research showed that bats are significant members of the ecosystem. Bats, like bees, are pollinators. They are champion gardeners, dispersing seeds that grow into the fruits and vegetables that we eat. And, best of all, bats devour thousands of insects each night including pesky mosquitos.

The girls also learned that many bats are exposed to White Nose Syndrome (WNS), a disease caused by a fungus so deadly that, three of the species on the Virginia list are federally endangered and all 10 types of bats in Maryland are "considered to be species of greatest conservation need." But, the Girl Scouts’ original idea was to propose that the little brown bat be named D.C.'s mammal. However due to WNS there has not been a verified sighting of a little brown bat in D.C. in more than 15 years! Not to be deterred, the troops proposed that the big brown bat, rather than the little brown bat, become the official state mammal.

The Girl Scouts' hard work and perseverance is paying off. It is expected that the big brown bat will soon become the official state animal nearly two years after the Girl Scouts started their crusade. The Girl Scouts made their initial presentation to Councilman Charles Allen in March 2019. Nearly a year later, in January 2020, Troops #44051, #44047, and #44046 presented their case to a Council Committee and in September 2020, Bill 23-302 was passed. It has since been signed by Mayor Muriel Bowser and is currently awaiting Congressional review. Then, Bill 23-302 will finally become law, making the big brown bat the official mammal of Washington, D.C.

Baby Pig Recovering From Leg Surgery

Last week, we introduced you to Lyla, a sweet baby potbellied pig with a badly broken leg. We're happy to share that she is recovering beautifully from the surgery to fix her leg. Thank you to Veterinary Surgical Centers - VSC for performing the surgery and reducing the cost of her surgery.

But the surgery was still expensive, costing HRA upwards of $4,000. Pigs & Pugs Project has graciously donated $1,000 towards Lyla's care. We still need $3,000 to replenish our funds that help save animal lives, no matter the species or injury.

Please consider making a donation for Lyla today at humanerescuealliance.org/supportlyla.

We often talk about our volunteers who foster animals and spend time walking dogs or socializing with cats. But we also have veterinarians who donate their time to HRA to help animals in need.

One of those doctors is Dr. Nancy Bromberg, a veterinary opthalmologist who has been working with HRA for over 10 years. Much of her work is dedicated to performing eyelid agenesis, or malformed eyelid, surgeries, which helps affected cats live happier and healthier lives. Dr. Bromberg has operated on approximately 100 cats in HRA's care. The number of hours she has dedicated to HRA has increased the cats' quality of life and given them an opportunity to find new loving families.

Thank Dr. Bromberg for all you have given to HRA and our animals. Our work wouldn't be possible without supporters like you.

Meet Dug! He's a friendly, super sweet pup, who loves getting pets and playing fetch, and can’t wait to do all these things with his new family. His foster mom let us know that Dug loves to cuddle, walks very well on a leash, and is great at following directions. At 7 years old, Dug is past the energetic puppy phase, but he plays well with his younger foster brother and other dogs. Understandably, Dug can be a little nervous when left home alone but his foster family is helping him adjust.

Think this 68-pound snuggler is the pup for you? To learn more and set up a virtual meet and greet visit humanerescuealliance.org/adopt. As an added bonus, Dug's adoption fee is waived for adopters over the age of 50.

Even at 13 years old, Sable loves to play! She is a wonderful, affectionate senior gal who will quickly wind her way into your heart. Sable has mild kidney disease that is being managed with a prescription diet. She does not let that keep her down and hopes you are interested in learning what that means and why it is not as scary as it sounds.

In honor of another senior black kitty HRA rescue, Sable's adoption fee will be covered by donation. After all, we're never too old to be loved! To learn more about Sable and schedule a virtual meet and greet, visit humanerescuealliance.org/adopt.

We have some amazing news to share: Ladybell has been adopted! She is going to spend the rest of her nap-filled days with her former foster mom, Barbara Hutcherson, who is also HRA's director of volunteers. The two have bonded so much while Ladybell has been in foster care, so Barbara decided to make her an official member of her family.

Once Ladybell has completed a few final medical treatments, she'll officially be a permanent fixture on Barbara's couch.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Ladybell's journey, whether through donations or words of encouragement. We wouldn't be able to give animals like Ladybell a second chance without you.

Lady is a cutie! One look at her scruffy face and your heart just melts. She's only 10 months old, with lots of energy and love to give. This sweet girl came to the Humane Rescue Alliance after being found as a stray and quickly charms everyone she meets. She loves people, leaning in for pets, playing outside, and most of all she'd love a home to call her very own.

Baby Pig Found With Broken Leg

On October 20, 2020 a concerned citizen brought the Humane Rescue Alliance a baby potbellied pig that was found in the area of Naylor Road in Southeast DC. The piglet, which we named Lyla, had a broken leg and an umbilical hernia. Despite her injuries, Lyla is a sweet and social girl who loves to snuggle up to anyone who comes to say hi.

HRA is working with Dr. Justin Ganjei from Veterinary Surgical Centers - VSC in Vienna to help repair Lyla’s leg and give her the specialized care she needs. They’ve graciously offered to reduce the cost of her surgery, which will still amount to $4000.

Lyla’s case is just one example of our dedication to any and all animals who come through our doors. No matter the species or condition, HRA works both internally and with our partners to provide the best care possible for dogs, cats, pigs, and more.

Investigators are actively seeking information in regards to where this pig came from. If you have any information Lyla and her condition, please call 202-723-5730, ext. 346, or email [email protected].

Our Story

The Washington Humane Society and the Washington Animal Rescue League have each served the animals and people of the District of Columbia and the National Capitol region for over a century. Now these two great forces for animal protection have come together to form an even more powerful organization: the Humane Rescue Alliance. With the creation of the Humane Rescue Alliance, we’re combining our proficiency and knowledge in all aspects of animal care, from providing quality, affordable medical services to creating families with each adoption. Wow I loved reading about Lucky and the little girl with Autism. That little girl is very lucky!! When I read about how he puts his paw on her arm to calm her down, I remembered how my Cee Cee Tortie would put a paw on my arm when I woke up after a nightmare-- she would give me a look of great concern.
Coco is 10 today! We are forever grateful for Officer Dan saving her 9 years ago. She is the most spoiled dog of all time and we can't imagine our lives without her. We look forward to the years to come and are grateful she made it this far after a few health scares over the years. Thanks for your tireless work to help so many of our furry friends 😊
