We'd like to thank those from a DC-area Target who donated food and toys to HRA. Their toy donations were immediately put to good use by dogs like Coco here! All of their food donations were distributed to pet owners in need as part of our Pet Pantry. It's thanks to the generosity of partners like them that we are able to continue saving lives and keeping people and their pets together.

Adoptable Morgana Is One Sweet Pup

This is Morgana, a sweet pup with a big smile! Whether it's going on leash walks on sidewalks or trails, playing with her toys, following basic commands including sit, down and paw, learning new lessons, napping, or presenting herself for petting, Morgana is playful, loving and loyal.

Most of all, she loves being with her person and doing what you want to do. Morgana would do best in a home without other animals or very young children.

As an added bonus, Morgana's adoption fee is waived through Sunday as part of our large dog (dogs over 40 pounds) adoption promotion. Learn more about Morgana and schedule a virtual meet and greet at humanerescuealliance.org/adopt.

Meet Coco! This sweet, one-year-old pup came to the Humane Rescue Alliance recently from a transport partner in Texas. He's quickly becoming a staff and volunteer favorite and loves to show off his tricks of sit and shake. Coco is a smart pup and would do well with a family that will continue to work on his training. At 62 pounds Coco isn't a small dog, but he thinks he is and will jump up and try his best to snuggle up on your lap.

If you're interested in meeting Coco or one of the more than 50 dogs currently available for adoption visit humanerescuealliance.org/adopt. If you’re not able to adopt, we are always in need of fosters for dogs like Coco.

Dog and Baby Goat Become Best Friends

It isn't every day that we get a goat in the shelter! Lorenzo came to HRA when he was just two weeks old after being kept as a pet in a DC apartment. As it's illegal to own a goat in the city, he was surrendered into our care. This kid quickly stole everyone at HRA's hearts. We all rushed to cuddle him, play with him, and help with bottle feeding. He loved every minute of it. He also made a special friend at HRA: Nellie, an HRA alum.

Now, Lorenzo has found his new home with our Vice President of Medical Programs & Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Megan McAndrew, where he can run around outside, graze, and cuddle up with his favorite person.

We're able to help any animal who comes through our doors thanks to the support of our community. It's the last day for the Spring Forward 30-day fundraising challenge and If you make a donation today, it will be matched up to $25,000 thanks to our generous Board of Directors. Make your donation at humanerescuealliance.org/springforward.

We received a call from a military veteran’s case manager asking if we could help a client, Mr. Jackson, with vaccinations for his service dog, Oreo. Mr. Jackson was moving and needed to show vaccine records to his new landlord. Prior to reaching out to HRA, Mr. Jackson and his case manager contacted multiple clinics, but could not find an affordable option. We were able to provide Oreo with the necessary vaccinations. According to Mr. Jackson’s case manager, he was on “cloud 9” that we were able to help him. Since Mr. Jackson returned from serving two wars, he has been despondent, felt hopeless and thought nobody cared about him; his case manager noted that we proved that thought wrong.

Today is the last day for the Spring Forward 30-day fundraising challenge and we need your help to keep people and pets like Mr. Jackson and Oreo together. If you make a donation today, it will be matched up to $25,000 thanks to our generous Board of Directors. Make your donation at humanerescuealliance.org/springforward.

Taz Has Got A Brand New Pair of Legs

Earlier this year we shared the story of Taz, a small dog who lost his two front legs. Thanks to all of your overwhelming support, he now has his prosthetics and is getting used to them so he can live a much more comfortable life. He has also been adopted by his foster mom, who renamed him Newt and gives him all of the love he deserves. No matter his medical needs, Newt was cared for and given the best possible care.

Today is the last day for the Spring Forward 30-day fundraising challenge and we need your help to give animals like Newt a beautiful new life. If you make a donation today, it will be matched up to $25,000 thanks to our generous Board of Directors. Make your donation at humanerescuealliance.org/springforward.

This is Tiramisu, who at 6 weeks old was found under a truck covered in tick and fleas. She quickly went into foster care with Mary Beth and her fiancé Steve, who immediately fell in love. She was feisty, cuddly, and endless entertaining. As soon as she came into their home, they knew they were going to adopt her. How could they not?

She came into their lives during the pandemic and provided some well-needed laughs and joy. Now, as she celebrates her first birthday, she is a healthy cat who loves to wreak havoc in the way only a kitten can. These are just some of the photos that track her growth from a tiny little creature to a full-blown cat.

From foster to adoption, HRA provided support and care to Mary Beth, Steve, and Tiramisu. You can help us with such support as part of our Spring Forward campaign, which now has a generous match of $25,000 from our Board of Directors. Donate today at humanerescuealliance.org/springforward.

Meet Joey! He is an absolute delight and always ready to hit the snooze button and cuddle up next to you for five more minutes. At just two years old, Joey is still learning his basic commands and would love to find a family that will continue working with him. He is highly treat motivated, smart, and ready to learn. Joey loves people and other dogs and is always ready for a fun car ride. He hops right in and enjoys looking out the window.

Our Story

The Washington Humane Society and the Washington Animal Rescue League have each served the animals and people of the District of Columbia and the National Capitol region for over a century. Now these two great forces for animal protection have come together to form an even more powerful organization: the Humane Rescue Alliance. With the creation of the Humane Rescue Alliance, we’re combining our proficiency and knowledge in all aspects of animal care, from providing quality, affordable medical services to creating families with each adoption. Most importantly, we’re here to tenaciously protect and advocate for the animals in our community, and support and celebrate people’s love and compassion for them. We are the Humane Rescue Alliance.

Please help me fine my lost dog The fone number is 2027589090 2407666456
My dear sweet Bubba has been missing since Tuesday, April 20, 2021 from Riverdale, MD. He is a large black on black tabby (very unusual) though from a distance he looks just like a black cat. White patches on his belly and chest, white whiskers, and his back toes are white. He’s about 13yo and 12 pounds, left ear-tipped. I miss him terribly and am worried sick. Please contact me day or night if you think you have seen him. We are on the 5800 block of Taylor Road. 💔🙏
Ellie (pka Mystery) lives in Colorado now - but she is still the love of our lives! Thank you Humane Rescue Alliance. ❤️
By the way...for cat's sake...please don't forget to warn folks to throw away the easter lilies!
Me and my husband have been reaching out to your office asking about adopting our son's dog Winter, put up for adoption without warning him, in DC. Please contact us ASAP.
Thank you to Officer Engle for looking into physical & emotional.abuse & neglect of Iyotyl, spayed & originally somehow coming from a VA or MD shelter or rescue) and her foster sibling, tonali ( black male kitten, intact and I think he said found in a garage); and their disappearance FRIDAY, after the construction worker owner almost broke my door down at midnite. * When I found them, they had noses caked in mucas, p**p caked on them, their litter reeked of amonia and had not been cleaned in weeks by the loojs of it, and they were starving. Then the other incidents we discussed. Sincerely - here she is with my cat..Jordan..
You guys are the best! We didn’t get her name, but your officer just responded to our call about a possible sick or injured raccoon in our yard, swooped in, and scooped the poor thing up with compassion and professionalism. She was amazing. Great job!
I've been meaning to write to you. In January 2018 we adopted a 3-year-old black cat named Pegasus (we renamed him Puma) from your Oglethorpe Street shelter. It was the best decision of our lives. We love him so much! He is frighteningly smart, affectionate, brave, and loving. We hope we've made him half as happy as he's made us. Thank you so much for taking care of our sweet. fuzzy little guy until we could find him and give him a home. Happy birthday, Puma!!!

Thank you HRA for taking care of Tango (previously named Estelle by HRA). She is settling in nicely in her fur-ever home. She had decided her new bed is just fine with her. She had no problem becoming a part of our family. 🥰
