Our Story
The Washington Humane Society and the Washington Animal Rescue League have each served the animals and people of the District of Columbia and the National Capitol region for over a century. Now these two great forces for animal protection have come together to form an even more powerful organization: the Humane Rescue Alliance.
With the creation of the Humane Rescue Alliance, we’re combining our proficiency and knowledge in all aspects of animal care, from providing quality, affordable medical services to creating families with each adoption. Most importantly, we’re here to tenaciously protect and advocate for the animals in our community, and support and celebrate people’s love and compassion for them. We are the Humane Rescue Alliance.

I've been meaning to write to you. In January 2018 we adopted a 3-year-old black cat named Pegasus (we renamed him Puma) from your Oglethorpe Street shelter. It was the best decision of our lives. We love him so much! He is frighteningly smart, affectionate, brave, and loving. We hope we've made him half as happy as he's made us. Thank you so much for taking care of our sweet. fuzzy little guy until we could find him and give him a home. Happy birthday, Puma!!!
Thank you HRA for taking care of Tango (previously named Estelle by HRA). She is settling in nicely in her fur-ever home. She had decided her new bed is just fine with her. She had no problem becoming a part of our family. 🥰

Loving our sweet Darnell!!!! Thank you for all you do!
HAPPY HALLOWEEN (DOBBY)
Wow I loved reading about Lucky and the little girl with Autism. That little girl is very lucky!! When I read about how he puts his paw on her arm to calm her down, I remembered how my Cee Cee Tortie would put a paw on my arm when I woke up after a nightmare-- she would give me a look of great concern.
Coco is 10 today! We are forever grateful for Officer Dan saving her 9 years ago. She is the most spoiled dog of all time and we can't imagine our lives without her. We look forward to the years to come and are grateful she made it this far after a few health scares over the years. Thanks for your tireless work to help so many of our furry friends 😊
Does anyone know if the Humane Rescue Alliance in DC is taking donations -- specifically blankets, sheets, etc.? Thanks.
It's been over 72 hours since "Cici" was last seen in the Southeast, Capital View Neighborhood between C St & Bass Place and 53rd & 54th St Southeast. Her brother "Max" and my niece and nephews miss her and would love to have her back home.
