U.S. Global Change Research Program

U.S. Global Change Research Program Welcome to USGCRP on Facebook — a hub of Federal news and info on climate and global change. You can also catch us on Twitter (@usgcrp). The U.S.

Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) coordinates research across 13 Federal agencies to better understand global change and prepare the Nation for its impacts. "Global change" is defined as changes in the global environment that may alter the capacity of the Earth to sustain life. Global change encompasses climate change; it also includes other processes that can interact with climate, such as changes in the water cycle, biogeochemical cycles, land use and management, demographics, and biodiversity.

Mission: To build a knowledge base that informs human responses to climate and global change through coordinated and integrated Federal programs of research, education, communication, and decision support.

The most ambitious research expedition ever to target the central Arctic got underway as the German icebreaker RV Polarstern pulled out of Tromso on September 20, destined for an ice floe where it will serve as a drifting base for hundreds of scientists during the next 13 months. More than 10 years....

The winter solstice, the official start of astronomical winter, arrives at 5:23 p.m. Eastern Time on December 21. At this exact moment, Earth's Northern Hemisphere reaches its greatest possible tilt away from the sun, and the sun's strongest rays shine on the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5°S latitude). ...

Polar bears and walruses are both dependent on sea ice during parts of their lives. Polar bears rely on sea ice to access prey and establish maternal dens, and Pacific walruses rely on drifting sea ice as a platform to rest on between foraging dives. #NCA4 https://bit.ly/3l0ClO7
