Happy Constitution Day! Today marks 239 years since our Founding Fathers signed the Constitution in Philadelphia, establishing the framework for our republic.

Its enduring principles of limited government, checks and balances, and individual liberty have helped shape generations of American life. From the freedom to speak our minds to the freedom to practice our faith, its protections remain central to who we are as a nation.

Today, we celebrate our Constitution and its opening words, “We the People,” a reminder that government is accountable to the Americans it serves.

Yesterday, I had the honor of participating in Benton Harbor’s September 11th remembrance ceremony to honor first responders. Thank you to the Mayor and the City for recognizing the heroism our police, firefighters, and EMT responders displayed on 9/11.

It was incredibly humbling to meet Dr. Paul Delle who was an EMT in Brooklyn and responded when terrorists attacked the twin towers 25 years ago. Today, he continues to save lives and serve the community as an ER doctor and firefighter here in Southwest Michigan. Dr. Delle, thank you for your incredible service to our country and community!

Twenty-five years ago, our nation was forever changed. On September 11th, nearly 3,000 people were spending time with their friends, families, and loved ones for what would be the last time. For those of us who saw these tragic events unfold on national tv, the memories remain vivid. We remember watching in disbelief as a second plane struck the World Trade Center. We remember the smoke rising from the Pentagon and learning that another plane had gone down near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Across Southwest Michigan, friends. families, and communities, watched in disbelief. We prayed for our nation, our neighbors, and those directly impacted by his tragic day.

A quarter-century later, an entire generation of Americans know September 11 only as history. We promised to never forget, and part of that promise is ensuring we teach younger Americans about the events that transpired.

Our children and grandchildren should know about the passengers aboard Flight 93 who fought back. They should know about ordinary Americans who helped complete strangers in a time of crisis.

Teaching the next generation also means understanding what happened afterward too.

Across Southwest Michigan and the nation, Americans displayed the flag, gathered in churches, donated blood, and checked on their neighbors. At one of our darkest moments, Americans showed what courage, service, faith, and patriotism looked like.

Today, parents, grandparents, teachers, and veterans across Southwest Michigan have an important responsibility.

We cannot allow September 11th to merely become a chapter in a history book. We owe it to those who never came home, to the heroes who ran toward danger, and to friends and families who carry the memory of their lost loved ones forward. We must tell the next generation what happened that day, how our nation responded, and how every day Americans came together to meet the moment.

Twenty-five years ago, we promised we would never forget. Now, we must make sure they never do.

One year ago today, Charlie Kirk was assassinated while speaking to students at Utah Valley University. His murder shocked our nation and robbed a wife of her husband, children of their father, and millions of Americans of a powerful voice for faith, freedom, and the importance of standing up for what you believe.

Charlie understood something important about America: disagreement should lead to debate, not hatred or violence. He went directly onto college campuses, including places where many strongly disagreed with him, and made the case for his values face-to-face.

He inspired countless young Americans to get involved, ask questions, defend their faith, and refuse to be intimidated into silence. I saw that influence personally, including with my own children.

A year later, Charlie’s absence is still deeply felt, but the ideas and movement he helped build have not disappeared. Students and Americans across the country continue gathering in his memory and carrying on the work he devoted his life to.

Political violence has no place in the United States. We can disagree passionately about politics, policy, and the direction of our country without treating those on the other side as enemies.

Today, I am praying for Erika, their children, the entire Kirk family, and everyone who loved Charlie. May we remember his life by defending our freedoms, speaking the truth without fear, and never surrendering the right of Americans to peacefully make their voices heard.

Protecting the Great Lakes requires Republicans and Democrats working together. With invasive carp found just 80 miles from Lake Michigan, time is even more of the essence. Thank you to President Trump, Governor Whitmer, and my bipartisan Great Lakes Task Force Co-Chairs for meeting the moment and getting this critical effort to protect the Great Lakes moving again.

The order had halted construction on a state-federal project in Joliet, Illinois, meant to block invasive carp from reaching the Great Lakes.
