Letter to the Chief: A Visitor’s Thank You

We recently received a letter from a visitor from Michigan sharing a meaningful story about one of our officers:

“I am writing to express my tremendous gratitude and sincere appreciation of one of your outstanding officers. … At the celebration on July 4, I was separated from my friend. In my emotional panic, I sought your officer to help me, and without hesitation, he ensured I was helped and safe.

The officer communicated with my friend on my cell phone, never let me out of his sight, allowed me to hold onto him, and did not leave me until we reached my friend and he was sure I was safe.

Beyond expectations of humanity and security, this officer’s representation of the U.S. Park Police, coupled with his heartfelt humanitarian gesture, was spectacular. Many guests cheered as they recognized the assistance your officer provided me, though I know the officer would have done it for anyone in need.

The entire U.S. Park Police made Washington, DC, proud throughout all the 250 America events. It was an absolutely magical time with cherished memories.”

Letters like this are a powerful reminder that what we do is far more than enforce the law; it is about being there for people when they need us. Moments like this reflect the best of our agency and the heart behind the badge.

One last look at summer: With Labor Day just around the corner (the unofficial end of summer), we’re wrapping up June, July and August with a few photos you haven’t seen yet.

Last week, U.S. Park Police officers responded to a vehicle fire on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. The fire reportedly started when a belt came loose from the alternator. But don't worry! The driver, the vehicle’s only occupant, exited without injury.

Great work Officers D’Antonio, Millin, Plimpton and Simon for their quick response and commitment to keeping motorists and the roadway safe.

If your vehicle catches fire:
• Pull over safely – away from traffic, buildings, dry brush, bridges and tunnels when possible.
• Turn off the engine. Do not open the hood—adding oxygen can intensify the fire.
• Get everyone out of the vehicle and at least 100 feet away, ideally upwind or uphill.
• Call 911 and do not return to the vehicle until safe.

Regular vehicle maintenance can help prevent problems before they become emergencies.

Last week marked the final Junior Police Academy tour of the year for our New York Field Office. Our officers welcomed the Millburn Township and Weehawken Junior Police Academies for a day of learning, demonstrations, and meaningful interaction with our officers and specialized units.

We want to recognize ALL the officers who supported this program throughout the year. These experiences would not be possible without your enthusiasm and commitment to connecting with the next generation of law enforcement. Thank you all!

On Friday, 13 U.S. Park Police recruits graduated from the Uniform Police Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) in Glynco, GA. This class represented the 10th group of UPTP graduates following the surge in recruiting last summer.

The UPTP is an accredited program through the Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation Board. It is designed to equip new officers with the knowledge and skills required for success in law enforcement, with training in legal instruction, driving, fi****ms, defensive tactics, officer response, and behavioral science.

With spirits high, the graduating class was supported by family and friends who traveled from near and far to witness the milestone.

The Highest Academic Award was earned by Recruit Leubner, the student with the highest academic average in the class (96.87%).

The 13 graduates are now preparing for the USPP Accelerated Training Program (ATP) at FLETC Cheltenham in MD. The ATP will bridge the UPTP foundation by incorporating training specific to the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, United States Park Police, and local jurisdictional laws.
