Deck Officer #ShoreToSea
Deck officers spend quite a bit of time, often months, sailing the globe’s open waters. They handle the navigation, communications, crew, cargo and overall operations of the ship.
There are multiple ways to become a deck officer: one is to graduate from one of the seven maritime academies across the country. Another is to satisfactorily complete a comprehensive apprentice mate training program approved by the Coast Guard. A final way is to be a ‘Hawsepiper.’ The term implies beginning as an unlicensed merchant seaman and going up the ladder to become an officer upon meeting the necessary requirements. All options require a combination of sea-time training, coursework and the completion of on-board assessments to qualify for a Third Mate license.
While each of the three officer ranks have different duties of varying responsibilities, each rank is required to carry out watch duties, which is when they are in charge of overseeing the safety and smooth navigation of the vessel.

Marine Engineer #ShoreToSea
Marine engineers can either work landside, in an office or aboard a vessel. While on land, engineers have access to tools and software necessary for analyzing projects and designing solutions. At sea, engineers are responsible for maintaining the engine, propulsion and electrical systems.
Graduating from an ABET-accredited school's marine engineering program, one of the country’s seven maritime academies or completing a comprehensive apprentice engineer training program approved by the Coast Guard are a few of the ways to begin the process of becoming a marine engineer. This education provides engineers with necessary skills to provide preventive maintenance on engine room equipment, mechanical and electrical operating systems.

Tugboat Operator #ShoreToSea
Tugboat operators guide large vessels into crowded harbors or narrow canals, maneuvering them with skill and precision. Some operators are even responsible for maneuvering large vessels through ice, particularly in colder areas of the U.S.
When it comes to becoming a tugboat captain, there are two types: the mate of towing and the master of towing. After years of on-the-job training, traditional education or a combination of both, tugboat operators possess the necessary knowledge of maritime procedures and the skillset to expertly guide a wide range of vessels into ports and shipyards.

Stevedore #ShoreToSea
Stevedores, commonly known as longshore workers or dockworkers, handle cargo at ports, often using materials-handling machinery and gear. They load and unload ships at docks, transferring cargo to and from storage areas or other transports, such as trucks and barges. It is a dangerous and physically demanding career, requiring almost one month of on-the-job training.
The exciting challenges of being a stevedore make them essential to the export and import of goods around the world, watch here to learn more about our country’s stevedores! #ShoreToSea

Vigor Alaska
Located in Ketchikan, AK, Vigor Alaska is an all-around shipyard, building, repairing and refitting many of the vessels sailing Alaskan waters. The small shipyard grant they received in 2017 provided them with the capital to purchase several pieces of equipment that would allow them to continue their year-round ship maintenance.

1943 US Merchant Marines
June History Series: Exploring Heroism and the US Merchant Marine during WWII. Part 2.
In 1943, the War Shipping Administration was training and graduating, brave midshipmen across the US to serve in the US Merchant Marine to support war efforts during WWII. Merchant Mariners, along with cadet-midshipmen training at sea, provided crucial supplies to the US Armed Forces and our allies. Often facing grave danger while unarmed, many of these brave mariners never returned to shore, making the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Today, our US Merchant Marine and Maritime academies continue to support our maritime country in times of peace and war. US Merchant Mariners strengthen our economy in ports, vessels, and waterways around the globe, and their work bolsters our national security through both disaster response support and supplying our Armed Forces with the critical resources necessary for their continued success.
This weekend the United States Merchant Marine Academy Class of 2018 graduates, continuing our country’s long-standing tradition of supporting our economic and national security through a strong US maritime industry.
