It will be a time for prayer, testimony, and witness. We want senators to know that we are not only watching how they will vote but praying for the millions of people who will be harmed if this legislation passes.

Faith leaders call for end to abusive payday lending practices - North Dallas Gazette

A great summary from last week's fly-in!

“We cannot consider the latest rule just when payday lenders are still allowed to make six loans per year with 300 percent interest rates without any regards as to whether it is affordable or not,” said Rev. Dr. Willie Gable, National Baptist Convention, USA and Co-Chair of Faith & Credit Roundtable. “This is simply too many unaffordable loans that will sink people into an exorbitant debt trap. Such a gaping loophole is essentially a sanction of these predatory products, not a step forward to rein them in.”

“This 6-loan loophole also puts states, like my home state of North Carolina, at risk,” said Rev. Sekinah Hamlin, Ecumenical Poverty Initiative. “North Carolina, along with 13 states plus the District of Columbia, prohibit these 300 percent interest rates, and thankfully, are free of these destructive loan products. Advocates have called on the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to not undermine a state’s prohibition on payday loans. I reiterate that call today.”

Once Skeptical of Executive Power, Obama Has Come to Embrace It

http://nyti.ms/2aJnLe2

"In May, Mr. Obama was asked by a farmer in Elkhart, Ind., to justify the 'dramatic increase' in government regulations that affected his business. 'I'm not interested in regulating just for the sake of regulating,' Mr. Obama responded. 'But there are some things like making sure we've got clean air and clean water, making sure that folks have health insurance, making sure that worker safety is a priority--that, I do think, is part of our overall obligation.'"

Mr. Obama will leave the White House as one of the most prolific authors of major regulations in presidential history.

CFED: Resource Directory

This report shows that it would take another 228 years for Black household wealth to just catch up to current levels of White wealth.

"The trends for median wealth among Black, Latino and White families clearly show that we aren’t on a path to reach racial wealth equality any time soon, if at all. If we continue at similar rates, even after an infinite number of years into the future, the racial wealth gap won’t close. If we do nothing, the racial wealth divide will just keep getting worse."

A WEEKLY VIRTUAL MASS MEETING FOR FAITH & COMMUNITY LEADERS

In the wake of the re-emergence of public lynchings of Black bodies, faith and community leaders around the country have been gathering to say ENOUGH! These killings suggest that Black peoples’ multi-generational fights for economic, political, and social justice continue to be met with structural violence against Black bodies and communities. This violence is similarly manifest in state and local policies that justify militaristic policing, the mass incarceration of our people, the willful disinvestment of services and resources within our communities, and the extraction of wealth from our economy by a few at the expense of millions who are unable to earn a decent living. In response, folks are showing up in streets across the country placing their bodies in motion and calling for radical change.

Won’t you join us in saying ENOUGH? TODAY AT 12:30pm ET we will tap and expand this emerging movement building energy by gathering together for weekly multi-faith virtual mass meetings. Through testimony from the field, the development of political and power analyses to frame our work, and planning for public actions that embody the power of multi-faith prophetic witness we will collectively say ENOUGH and demand a commitment to human thriving.

Make the Government a Model Employer

"The Senate cafeteria workers won attention and redress in large part because they alerted senators, whom they see daily, to their plight. Meanwhile, other food servers, maintenance workers and salespeople who work for contractors at Union Station, the Smithsonian and other federal sites in Washington continue to protest regularly over poverty-level pay and subpar conditions.

The problems are not confined to the capital. Studies show that across the nation, hundreds of billions of dollars in federal money flower to federal contractors that pay poorly, leaving workers dependent on public aid. Meanwhile, executive pay at federal contractors has risen."

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/03/opinion/make-the-government-a-model-employer.html?_r=0

Federal contractors get rich on taxpayer-provided projects, but they often pay their employees poorly. That has to change.

Wage Theft Discovered Inside The Senate

"If members of Congress want to learn more about wage theft, they should talk to some of the low-wage workers who serve them meals.

The Labor Department announced Tuesday that federal contractors had shorted 674 Senate cafeteria workers to the tune of $1 million. Two companies, Restaurant Associates and its subcontractor, Personnel Plus, violated the law by misclassifying workers into lower-paying positions and having them work off the clock, the agency said."

In the midst of political conventions, we remember that almost exactly one year ago we worked with leaders in the Circle of Protection to convince presidential candidates to record short videos explaining how their administrations would address poverty in the United States. General information

Churches and Christian communities have lifted our powerful voices for generations on a range of defining social justice issues, most importantly the need to end poverty. Central to any Christian message is the call to care for the "least of these"--to love and care for our neighbors. With more people both in the United States and globally living on the economic margins, people of faith are drawing more deeply upon that rich tradition of social justice engagement to speak out on the need to address the range of poverty issues, and create community practices and national policies that lift people from a life of poverty.
