The IC and IM Programs combine the "hardware" and "software" of international communication and media

The Intercultural and International Communication (IC) Program in the School of International Service (SIS) is the oldest specialized degree program in this field in the United States. Since its inception, the program has focused on the role of culture in shaping communication and international affairs. In 2007, the Program diversified its offerings by creating a joint MA in Global Media (GM) degree with the School of Communication. The programs focus on both the “software” and “hardware” of the communication and media fields. IC and GM software includes both the literal software of professional skill development in information technology and social media as well as the analytical frameworks that are vital to the critical thinking and analysis skills of our graduates. The hardware has changed over the years as we moved from print and broadcast formats to ongoing telecommunications changes and evolutions, such as social media and citizen journalism. With concentrations in Public and Cultural Diplomacy, Intercultural Relations, Global Health Communication, and Global Social Media, Technology and Policy, as well as offering a degree in International Media, the IC and GM Programs remain on the cutting edge of the field. In addition to the academic programs offered, the IC is also home to three institutes that are at the pinnacle of their respective fields: the Intercultural Management Institute (IMI); The Center for Research on Collaboratories and Technology Enhanced Learning Communities (COTELCO); Institute on Disability and Public Policy (IDPP). These centers together with other opportunities offered by SIS and being located in Washington DC offer students strategic opportunities for skill development, interning with potential future employers and professional networking.
