Kata-yuzen is a dyeing technique that utilizes paper stencils to transfer the design. This type of dyeing is often used on kimono, creating stunning masterpieces. Although stencils are reused, no two kimono look exactly alike.

Happy New Year, everyone! In Japan, towards the end of the year, people send their loved ones New Years cards (nengajo)! Often with traditional designs and featuring the zodiac animal of the coming year, these cards are a great piece of culture to give to those you care about. I’m submitting this design in particular to Japan Information & Culture Center, Embassy of Japan’s #2020JICCNengajo contest but I wanted to share the love here and give you the opportunity to get some yourself. If you buy postcard print, I’ll write a message (English or Japanese) for you and send it as is! If you buy a set, they will come to you blank to be filled in and sent however you like.
