The St. John Volunteer Corps in St. Louis, Missouri have been busy fulfilling the age-old mission of the Hospitallers, ‘aiding the poor and the sick' by doing inspirational work in their community:
The St. Louis SJVC works with Fisher House on the campus of the Jefferson Barracks VA Medical Center, which is a beautiful home provided for people who are far from home because of an illness, either their own or that of someone close to them.
Most residents are the loved ones of patients receiving treatment in one of the two hospitals run by the Department of Veterans Affairs, others are themselves veterans, receiving outpatient treatment, whilst others are active duty military personnel whose dependents are receiving treatment at those facilities. All are more than 50 miles from their homes and dealing with an unfamiliar environment and a complicated treatment delivery system as well as their medical problems.
Each month, usually five or six St. John volunteers appear to serve food—which has often been prepared in their own kitchens—lay out the serving line, serve the meal, do the dishes, and leave extra portions ready for residents. Sometimes St. John volunteers dine with the guests; sometimes they welcome them into the family kitchen and chat as they cook or clean.
“Without fail, they take time to speak with the guests—to listen to their stories—and to provide the human sympathy than can be hard to find in any large and busy institutional setting. After an evening at Fisher House, any member of St. John can feel that he or she has done real good and continued the Order of St. John’s best traditions.”

St John USA is delighted to announce that in 2016 we raised a record $2.3 million for our St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospitals and outreach programs in the Holy Land.
This is due to the continued committed service and generosity of our members, and we thank them all for their support. All funds have now been distributed to Jerusalem and we are confident that this will allow us to reach and treat even more patients in 2017, and to continue to fulfill our mission to serve for the Faith and in the Service of Mankind.

A USAID (US Agency for International Development) grant which supported St John with an incredible $2 million USD for a four-year project entitled “Improving Eye Care Services For Palestinians”, for our hospitals, has successfully concluded this year.
The project included supporting the operations of one mobile outreach clinic, 1500 phaco surgeries, and the development of state-of-the-art Health Management Information System. In total, over 33,400 patients were reached and screened or treated by the funding.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank USAID for their incredible support, which has changed the lives of thousands of people in the communities which we serve.

ST JOHN USA - VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT - FALL 2016: JANE HEATH - SAN FRANCISCO
For the past 4 years, Jane Heath has been volunteering every week at the VA’s Fort Miley veteran hospital bringing joy to dozens of veterans by designing and leading creative recreational therapy projects for the CLC residents.
When asked what volunteering means to her Jane answered: "The men and women at the CLC welcome me each week with trusting smiles, they give me so much more than I can ever give them.
With me these residents have created art to adorn their communal areas, with they love to proudly point out to visitors. Some projects only take a week or two, others are projects they work on over several months, working individually but creating as a team – just as they did throughout their service.
These wonderful artists have become my extended family and so when one is not well enough to participate, I make bedside visits to let them know that they were missed and not forgotten. And when one passes, as happened recently, my heart breaks. My weekly visits to the CLC are about so much more than accumulating volunteer hours, my volunteering is about celebrating the good in this world and being part of man’s love and support for his fellow man. And I am so grateful for the opportunity to give just a little back to those who have given so much."
Thank you Jane for inspiring us all and serving those who served all of us.
More amazing work from our outreach teams!
Today Dr Islam Al Hashash and our Mobile Outreach team have been seeing patients in Al Nasarya, near Jericho. No doubt it was a day of beautiful scenery, amazing doctors and nurses and wonderful patients.
Here's is one of our very generous and dedicated members Peter Goltra at the opening of our new Hebron Hospital, with a new surgical microscope he funded in memory of his late wife Gail. Thank-you Peter for all your continued, invaluable support!

Our CEO Brian Sayers recently visited our hospitals in Jerusalem and was delighted to see the newly purchased outreach van, which the US membership bought. The van is now allowing far more people to be reached and given life saving and changing eye treatment!
Thank you so much to all of our new likers! Happy Friday everyone!
We are extremely proud to have supported the opening of our new Hebron Hospital and are very grateful to our generous US member Peter Goltra for his part in this momentous achievement, and to all of our wonderful members, who help make our continued work in the Holy land possible...
We recently officially opened our new Hebron Hospital in the presence of a variety of important guests – including many of those who helped make our new hospital become a reality.
St.John Scotland were welcomed with a lone piper sounding them in as they helped to cut the ribbon to mark the hospital’s opening.
Also in attendance was Mr Peter Goltra who generously funded a fantastic and absolutely vital surgical equipment in memory of his wife the late Mrs Gail Goltra.
Mrs Elizabeth Mellows, who with her late husband Professor Anthony Mellows, helped to fund the beautiful David Robert’s mural was there for its unveiling – an absolutely beautiful piece of artwork which captures the history and beauty of the beautiful Hebron region.
Two representatives from the Knights Templar The Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons were welcomed, Mr Jamie Ingham Clarke and Mr Ernest Coleman - whose organisation also contributed significantly to building the new hospital.
It was truly a special day as representatives from our international St John Family came together to celebrate this momentous occasion for St John. Other than the above we had Priors, Great Officers and Hospitallers from St. John Ambulance Canada, St John Cymru Wales, Order of St John USA, St John Ambulance Australia, St John - South Africa along with some of our fundraising group The Guild and our Board of Trustees.
Our new Hebron Hosptial will allow us to treat 20% more patients in a region that desperately needs our services, allowing us to change thousands of lives in the process.
Thank you to all who came to mark this truly special occasion #stjohnfamily
Our outreach teams are busier than ever this year with added regions and more staff allowing us to reach more people than ever before....check out some of our pictures here...
Thanks to all of our new likers....here are some new patient and volunteer pictures from our medical facilities in the Holy Land...happy Wednesday from and to all!
St John Zambia
SHAME ON YOU - WHOEVER YOU ARE!!
St. John Zambia - A voluntary organisation providing First Aid, Ambulance and primary health care services. Currently implementing Maternal Newborn Child Health to help pregnant women and new mothers with their babies in Chunga of Lusaka district, Shifwankula and Naluyanda in Mungule of Chibombo district has been robbed of a Motor Cycle for Mama na mwana (Mother and Child) program. Registration number BAA 6412, Make Toyo, white in colour. This happened on Tuesday night at St. John Zambia offices where all the property is kept.
It will be very difficult to do this noble work without the Motor Cycle which proved efficient and cost effective when it comes to monitoring, supervision and data collection from our hard working volunteers in the field.
St. John Zambia volunteers will continue conducting Mother and Child program to pregnant women and new mothers with infants as they do it with dedication “IN THE SERVICE OF HUMANITY” which is our motto.
Should anyone be ready to help us in any manner, kindly send us a private message.
We hope the Zambia Police Service will take this case very seriously.
Another incredible achievement of our St John of Jerusalem Eye Hopsital in the Holy Land...
Thanks to the expert training of St John Eye Hospital Group, alongside Palestinian Authority’s Gaza Eye Hospital, Dr Hisham has become the first doctor to be certified in Ophthalmology from training received in the Gaza Strip. This is excellent news for the region as the complex permit systems make it extremely difficult for Gazans to access qualifications outside its borders.
He is also understandably ecstatic, stating: ‘It is an absolute pleasure to be working with the St John Team!’
Hopefully this will be the first of many more qualified ophthalmologists from the region. Congratulations Dr Hisham!
Wishing everyone a very happy Labor day weekend from the St John USA team!
