We are excited to announce that FRA and the Timber Harvesting and Transportation Safety (THATS) Foundation are hosting the first ever virtual auction in conjunction with FRA’s Virtual Annual Meeting, May 17-19. This year’s auction will be open to all FRA members and will close at the conclusion of the FRA Board of Directors Meeting on May 19.

FRA needs your help in funding this important cause through donations. Since the Foundation has a 501(c)3 tax classification, your donation for the auction is completely tax deductible. Financial help for logging safety projects should be part of the annual giving goal of any forestry related corporation or company that is dependent on the raw material that loggers cut and haul to their wood consuming mills.

Please email [email protected] if you are interested in donating.

Evaluating and Managing Storm-Damaged Forestland

Forest landowners are likely to have some amount of storm damage to their forest land at some point in time. Many articles are available to landowners and foresters on evaluation and salvage of storm-damaged areas, but fewer are available on practical salvage practices for loggers. Below are some tips for foresters and loggers when evaluating storm-damaged stands for salvage.

03/04/2021

FRA member Rayonier recently released a report detailing the positive net carbon impact of their forestry operations. The report demonstrates the important role that working forests play in fighting climate change.

We are proud to share our first ever carbon report demonstrating that Rayonier's forests create natural climate change solutions. The trees we grow remove more carbon than we emit in our operations, including the carbon removed through our harvest activities. The results demonstrate that we generated a net positive carbon sequestration of 5.7 million metric tons of CO2 equivalents in 2019.

Our forests remove carbon from the atmosphere every year and store it in the ecosystem. At the end or 2019, Rayonier's forests stored a total of 732 million metric tons of CO2 equivalents in the trees, understory vegetation, forest floor and the soil.

Trees that are harvested from our forests continue to store carbon in forest products such as lumber and paper. Then the cycle begins again. New trees are planted after harvest and, as they grow, they absorb CO2 from the atmosphere at a faster rate than the mature trees they replaced.

NASA’s Moon Trees are all over the United States – here’s how to find them

During the Apollo 14 mission to the Moon, hundreds of tiny seeds were aboard the Command Module Kitty Hawk. The seeds survived the trip to space, and eventually traveled back to Earth with the crew. NASA germinated the seeds and many of them were planted across the United States as so-called “Moon Trees,” and they’re still doing great today.

Trump Administration Lifts Protections For Largest National Forest In US The Trump administration has officially eliminated federal protections for Alaska's Tongass National Forest, the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world. With the rollback of the Roadless Rule, nine million previously-protected acres are now open further to potential development. What does that mean for trees that have been storing carbon for centuries? For more on this story, check out the episode page. You can email the show at [email protected].
