Naval Lodge No. 4 Naval Lodge No. 4 masonic lodge meets at 7:30pm (dinner at 6:30pm) on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of eac Washington DC 20003
(17)

Naval Lodge No. 4 is one of many masonic lodges that meet on Capitol Hill. It was originally chartered as Washington Naval Lodge No. 41 by the Grand Lodge of Maryland in 1805. However, only six years later, it joined with five other lodges in the federal district to form the new Grand Lodge of Washington, DC, and was re-chartered as Naval Lodge No. 4. In the early 1800s the Navy Yard was one of th

e largest employers in the city and for nearly the next 100 years the Lodge was mainly composed of craftsmen and workers from the Navy Yard and the market nearby. In 1893, Naval Lodge bought the current location and began building its current building. Once the building was completed in 1894, it became a center of Masonic and community activity on Capitol Hill and Southeast Washington. Today it is the oldest Masonic building in the District that is still used for Masonic purposes. For more information visit our website at http://www.naval-lodge.org

Naval Lodge No. 4 meets at 7:30pm (dinner at 6:30pm) on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month, except July and August. Naval Lodge No. 4 is located on Capitol Hill at
330 Pennsylvania Avenue, S.E.

On March 18th, 2023, WM Rosario A. Torres and his wife Nohealani Torres hosted the Inaugural Significant Others Appreciation Brunch. The brunch brought the significant others of our brethren together and strengthened the bonds within our Naval Lodge family! WM Torres, along with our Senior and Junior Wardens (Pete Rogers and Sergio Aleman), Junior Deacon (James P Thompson III), and Secretary (Dan Mattausch) helped serve meals and prepare drinks for our guests of honor!

The brothers of Naval Lodge would like the thank the following individuals who helped plan the event:

Mrs. Nohealani Torres (Planning Committee Chair)
Mrs. Angela King Thompson
Mrs. Patty Aleman

On March 11th, 2023, WM Rosario A. Torres and the brothers of Naval Lodge No. 4 helped raise money in the fight against childhood cancers! This year's St. Baldrick’s Day event raised almost $6,000 to help fund childhood cancer research! Thanks to all of our volunteers and those who attended. And a very special thank you to WB Christian Jerome who organized the event!

Naval Lodge No. 4 challenges you to participate in the St. Baldrick's Event hosted by the Naval Lodge for 2023 on March 11th, from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Volunteers will shave their heads in solidarity with children who typically lose their hair during treatment, and we challenge YOU to join us in making a “bald” statement at the Naval Lodge (330 Pennsylvania Ave SE).

While not an easy thing to do, it’s important these children understand they’re not alone in their efforts. Together, our message will be more profound and the task before us easier to accomplish.

But it won’t just be shaved heads! The event will have a carnival theme, with brunch and refreshments, games with prizes, and music for the whole family. Also, please consider volunteering. Extra hands are always appreciated. After the shaving, we will adjourn to a nearby venue for further fellowship.

Worldwide a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes, and one in five children diagnosed in the U.S. will not survive. With only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick’s Foundation volunteers, supporters and donors are needed to continue the battle against this devastating disease. Get involved and you'll be giving hope to infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers.

If you would like to join us and shave your head or make a donation, please visit:

Please let us know if you have any questions about this fun and charitable event.

What a beautiful day for a parade! The brothers of Naval Lodge No. 4, along with other DC Lodges, joined the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia to march in The 2023 George Washington Birthday Parade. Our Worshipful Master, Rosario A. Torres, had the distinct honor of holding the banner for the Grand Lodge of DC along with the District's other founding Lodges.

After the parade, the brothers of Naval Lodge joined thousands of other Freemasons from across the country to re-dedicate the cornerstone of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial and to celebrate the Memorial’s next century of service.

Thursday evening we had the privilege of raising 7 Naval Brethren to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. For the first time since 1984, Naval Lodge performed its unique version of the 3rd degree, drawing more than 60 visitors from six Grand Jurisdictions and the Grand Master of Masons of the District of Columbia. Please join us in congratulating these newly raised Brothers!

On July 13, 1864, Naval Lodge’s regular meeting was cancelled as its officers rushed to the front lines to defend Washington, DC against rebel forces. These brothers represent the every-day soldier who fought without recognition or fame during the Civil War. Today, in honor and recognition of their bravery, as well as all men and masons who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, Naval Lodge laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.

Earlier this week Bro. Kostas Yiavis delivered a fantastic lecture on some of the landmarks of Greek literature from the classical times until the Middle Ages and their relationship to the lessons of Freemasonry. Dr. Yiavis is a member of Naval Lodge #4, a Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Thessaloniki in his native Greece, and currently the Byzantine Studies Fellow at Dumbarton Oaks, a Harvard University research institute here in Washington, DC.

Although we kept everything outdoors this year, Naval Lodge still had a festive holiday Sunday, complete with Santa, trains, and beautiful lights. After hot cocoa and cookies with Santa at the Lodge, each of the children picked out a toy. Then we all walked down the Botanical Gardens next to the Capitol Building. There were amazing model trains chugging around elevated tracks, amazing decorations, and the Capitol Christmas tree. It was a wonderful evening!

Naval Lodge has helped with the rehabilitation of Potomac Triangle Parks over the last year, clearing brush, weeding, planting, and otherwise making the park a community asset that families can enjoy. To help celebrate all the groups and individuals that volunteered, the group leading the rehab effort, Guerrilla Gardeners, held a celebration for the community on Saturday, July 24.

People from the neighborhood streamed in all afternoon, and Naval fired up the grill and fed the crowd hot dogs, chips and sandwiches. It was a wonderful celebration of the rejuvenation of the parks and acknowledgment of the volunteers.

‪In the early 1900s, the members of Naval Lodge No. 4 developed a series of popular postcards, which included this depiction of their Ancient Egyptian-themed lodge room. This card and the rest of the series is carefully preserved in our archives.

Naval Lodge teamed up with our Capitol Hill neighbors to put together this great tribute to our nation.

I hope you all have a great 4th of July enjoying family and watching fireworks. Stay safe this year and I hope we get to march down 8th St next year.

This past Presidents Day, Justice Columbia Lodge No. 3 joined with the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia to March in the George Washington Birthday Parade in Alexandria, Virginia. Our Brother Chaplain, Kipp Chapin, had the distinct honor of holding the banner with the other three founding lodges, Federal Masonic Lodge No. 1, Naval Lodge No. 4, and Potomac Lodge No. 5.

After the parade, they joined thousands of Freemasons from across the world at the George Washington Masonic National Memorial for the 100 year anniversary of its dedication.
Sixteen years ago on this day, Naval Lodge No. 4 took the lead to coordinate all the brethren who came to DC to honor our Illustrious Brother. Thank you for being a good and noble host.
