Labrador Hails Passage of Criminal Justice Reform Bill

Today, I voted for and the House passed, S. 3649, the First Step Act. This bipartisan bill enacts the most significant reforms to America’s criminal justice system in a generation. I’ve been working on this issue since I was first elected eight years ago, and it’s rewarding to see our hard work finally pay off. The First Step Act will improve America’s justice system by allowing it to focus on the most violent offenders, while reducing sentences for those worthy of a second chance. To learn more about the First Step Act and my work on sentencing reform, please click here:

Today, we remember President George H.W. Bush - a great American who committed his life to serving our country. This beautiful tribute from his grandson, George P. Bush, says it all:

“My grandfather was the greatest man I ever knew. His life spanned the American Century—he fought in World War II ... took part in the Texas oil boom ... served out a distinguished career in public service including serving as president during the final days of the Cold War.”

Idaho's Harmon Killebrew has enjoyed many honors on the national stage, including winning the American League's Most Valuable Player Award and induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Killebrew, who died in 2011, is also a legend in his home town, where the Payette High School football and baseball fields bear his name, as does a Miracle League Field built by Killebrew's foundation to accommodate young athletes with disabilities. Soon, the Post Office in Payette will be named in his honor. Yesterday, the U.S. Senate approved my bill to designate the "Harmon Killebrew Post Office Building." I expect President Trump to sign the bill soon.

Today, on Veterans Day, we pay tribute to those brave men and women who have served our nation in uniform. We also honor the enduring service of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen. On so many battlefields, over so many generations, they have shown the true measure of American character. That is something we must never take for granted.

Congressman Raúl Labrador : Prop 1 Stands on Questionable Grounds and Questionable Messages

I have had the privilege of serving the people of this great state for 12 years. From the Capitol in Boise to the halls of Congress in Washington, I can spot a bad deal for the Gem State from a mile away. That is why I am voting “no” on Proposition 1 in Tuesday's election and you should too. Learn more in my Labrador Letter.

Great news: Today, the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs approved my bill to name the Payette Post Office after baseball great Harmon Killebrew. Killebrew was born and raised in Idaho, was named to 13 All-Star teams, and was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1984. He later became a committed philanthropist, founding the Harmon Killebrew Foundation and building Miracle League fields for kids with disabilities. The House passed my bill in July, and I’m hopeful the Senate will consider it soon. To learn more about Killebrew’s legacy, click here: goo.gl/QHbydz

This photo of three young boys folding an American flag in Hayden is going viral, and rightfully so. These three young patriots (Naylan Tuttle, Jack KeBreck, and Casey Dolan) are representative of the good people who live in Idaho's First Congressional District, who love our country and honor our flag. Thank you to Mac McCarty, the school's custodian, who showed the fifth graders how to properly fold and store the flag. Thank you, also, to Amanda Reallan, who took the photo. I am proud of all of you, and so is Idaho! Here's the full story: goo.gl/tJHdB1

Congressman Raúl Labrador : A Big Step Toward Ensuring Justice in Idaho Federal Courts

I'm gratified the House Judiciary Committee approved a long-overdue third U.S. district judge for Idaho, an issue I've worked on since joining the committee in 2013. As a young lawyer, I worked in Idaho’s federal court system and saw the consequences of delay. This included frustration and heartache for both victims and defendants in criminal cases, and uncertainty and economic loss for those in civil matters. “Justice delayed is justice denied” is more than an old adage. It hurts people and our economy. More in this week's Labrador Letter.

Judiciary Committee Approves Bill Adding Third District Judge in Idaho

Today, the House Judiciary Committee approved H.R. 6755, legislation that authorizes a third U.S. District judge for Idaho and adds judges to other jurisdictions with judicial emergencies. With Idaho’s courts plagued by delays due to an overburdened caseload, securing this legislation has been one of my top priorities. I introduced H.R. 503 in 2017 to add a third U.S. District judge for Idaho. As a member of the Judiciary Committee, I voted for today’s legislation. For my full press release, please click below:

Congressman Raúl Labrador : The Kavanaugh Hearings: How to Judge a Judge

After his impressive performance at this week’s hearing, Judge Brett Kavanaugh is poised to join Neil Gorsuch as President Trump’s second successful Supreme Court nominee. One of the President’s most important responsibilities is nominating judges who understand how to properly apply our Constitution. The President is keeping his promise by nominating Judge Kavanaugh, and the Senate should confirm him expeditiously. More in this week's Labrador Letter.

Connecting today's Congress with tomorrow's coders.

I'm excited to announce my office will again be hosting The Congressional App Challenge, an app competition for high school students in Idaho's 1st Congressional District.

The App Challenge accepts computer programs written in any programming language, for any platform. Students are encouraged to register online by Sept. 10 before submitting their app by the Oct. 15 deadline. The competition is open to all students, regardless of coding experience.

This is a great way to showcase the talent of young Americans in a vital sector of our growing economy. Winning apps are eligible to be featured on a display in the U.S. Capitol, on house.gov, and on the Congressional App Challenge website.

Congressman Raúl Labrador : Showcasing Talented Young Idahoans Pushing Their Limits

Eleven Idahoans won The Congressional Award this year, in gold, silver and bronze.

The medals are nice. But more important is what they represent: goal setting, discipline, commitment and the responsibility that comes with meeting deadlines. Many of these students, aged 14 to 23, must move outside their comfort zones, an experience that teaches lifetime lessons. More in this week's Labrador letter.

Congressman Raúl Labrador : They Said It Couldn't Be Done

When Donald Trump was running for President, he set a goal of hitting 4 percent growth. Liberal activists and the media mocked him. They were used to the low growth and low expectations of the Obama years, when the economy grew by about 2 percent annually. They were wrong, and it’s important to understand why. It wasn’t just pure luck. The reason the economy is surging is because of the pro-growth policies of President Trump and the Republican Congress.

Congressman Raúl Labrador : Happy Independence Day 2018

As we celebrate this Independence Day, let us remember the example of those early patriots who committed themselves to the ideals of freedom and liberty. Labrador: U.S. has to stop encouraging migrants to avoid detention by bringing children

The pictures of migrant children being separated from their parents at the border are heartbreaking. But what I find even more heartbreaking is the entire humanitarian crisis at the southern border. The root of the crisis is lax enforcement of our immigration laws, a problem that didn’t start under President Trump. In fact, the biggest reason for the crisis is that previous administrations pursued a “catch and release” policy for those seeking asylum after illegally crossing our borders.

Read more in my op-ed, published today by the Idaho Statesman.

What makes these tragedies so unnecessary is there’s already a process in place for migrants legitimately seeking asylum in the U.S.. They can show up at any embassy, consulate or U.S. port of entry to make their asylum claims.

Labrador Speaks at Subcommittee Hearing Examining the Need for New Federal Judges, June 21, 2018

The effort to ensure fairness and timeliness in Idaho’s federal courts took a step forward today during a subcommittee hearing in the House Judiciary Committee. A key witness, Lawrence Stengel, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and Chair of the Judicial Conference Committee on Judicial Resources, agreed Idaho needs a third district judge. As the fastest-growing state in the U.S., criminal filings in Idaho have risen 163 percent since 2001. I agree with Judge Stengel that justice delayed is justice denied and I’m working hard on my bill to add a third judge before Congress adjourns in December. For more on today’s hearing, take a look at the video below. https://bit.ly/2MJ2SPk

Congressman Raúl Labrador : Putting Our People and Our Land Back to Work

June is the start of fire season in Idaho and most of the West. In recent years, we have suffered from devastating wildfires partly because our forests have been poorly managed, leading to historically high fuel loads. I recently recently questioned the Forest Service's Interim Chief about how we can put our people and our land back to work. More in my Labrador Letter:

Congressman Raúl Labrador : This Month's Jobs Report is Truly Historic. Here's Why It Matters.

This month, the U.S. unemployment fell to 3.8%, tying a 49-year low. When the Labor Department released its latest jobs report, the New York Times said, "We ran out of words to describe how good the job numbers are." Smart, pro-growth polices by President Trump and the Republican Congress are fueling the boom. More in my e-newsletter:

I-84 To Be Widened in Canyon County

Great news for Idaho: Today, Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao approved a $90 million grant for Interstate 84 in order to widen three lanes in both directions through the Nampa area. Improving I-84 is critical to Idaho’s economic future, especially when it comes to enhancing our competitiveness. In March, I joined the Idaho delegation in sending a letter want to Secretary Chao advocating for the grant. This is a big win for Idaho we can all support.

I enjoyed meeting Maddee Moore of Nampa, who is representing Idaho at the National Cattlemen's Beef Association’s Young Cattlemen’s Conference. She is a producer and a Regional Manager at IMMVAC, which manufactures vaccines and serums for livestock and companion animals. Maddee is a great advocate for Idaho’s beef industry, and we had a great conversation about how to make the industry stronger than ever.

Please consider running for Governor again. We desperately need you!
A transgender division should be created for transgender children. Girls should compete with girls, boys with boys, and transgender children should compete is a dedicated sports division.
I'd like to know what you personally and the Idaho Republican Party have to say (and what you will DO) about the SWAT team raid on the Kendrick Hardware Brewery. Clearly, the Governor was looking for a reason to close them down other than the civil disobedience of opening their business in defiance of the Governor's order rather than lose their business and life's savings. When Little found a flimsy reason, he had the ISP act as if they were taking down a Mexican Cartel. As the leading member of the Governor's party, you have a duty to publicly disavow the Governor's clear violation of the Constitutional rights of these small business owners. I might point out that as of their May 1 opening, there had been ZERO cases of the coronavirus, and, obviously no deaths, in the entirety of Latah County and, of course, my home town of Kendrick. You CANNOT remain silent on this matter; YOU MUST ACT.
Raul, Please consider your stance on lifting Dr. Fauci's recommendations for our nation. Independently choosing what you believe over our health experts recommendation is irresponsible and putting Idaho residents and your constituents at risk. Please dont put us at risk based on political agendas!
nice meeting you labrador

As chairman for the Idaho Republican Party what is your response to the Mike Bloomberg tv ads Mr. Labrador?!
Dear Congressman Thank you for standing up for President Trump yesterday. Please keep up the fight, its about time the GOP get down and dirty with the dems. We expect to see this again and again... once is not enough!
