Heads up, neighbors. A controlled blast is rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. tonight (Monday, Aug. 3) as part of DC Water’s Potomac River Tunnel Project near the Georgetown University entrance on Canal Road NW.

For everyone’s safety, police and flaggers will temporarily stop traffic on Canal Road NW between the university entrance and Foxhall Road NW, as well as West Road NW near the construction site, beginning about five minutes before the blast. Traffic will resume once the area has been cleared.

You may hear a brief loud noise or feel light shaking.

Thank you for your patience as we continue this important infrastructure project to help protect the Potomac River.

Over the weekend, our team joined The Federal City Alumnae Chapter DST’s 19th Annual Community Day in Deanwood.

A major milestone in protecting critical infrastructure. 👏

DC Water has completed the first of four emergency repair projects on the Potomac Interceptor sewer line, strengthening a 600-foot section of pipe at Dulles International Airport.

After inspections identified corrosion, worn concrete, and exposed steel supports, crews repaired a 175-foot section with a strong, concrete-like lining before installing a cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner, creating a new pipe within the existing one. Together, these repairs restored the pipe to like-new condition.

This work helps protect public health, the environment, and the long-term reliability of a critical sewer line while advancing the ongoing rehabilitation of the Potomac Interceptor.

Today, crews installed a cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) repair liner into the Potomac Interceptor sewer pipe, marking another milestone on DC Water’s Potomac Interceptor Rehabilitation Project near Dulles International Airport.

The white material being lowered from the truck is the CIPP repair liner. Crews lower the liner into a manhole before inserting it into the sewer pipe. Once cured, it forms a durable new layer inside the existing pipe.

This trenchless repair method strengthens the pipe from the inside, helping prevent future failures while minimizing impacts to the surrounding area. By investing in proactive infrastructure improvements today, we’re helping ensure reliable wastewater service for the region for decades to come.

Ever wonder what happens to the things that shouldn’t be flushed? 👀

Meet Jun Fang, DC Water’s Manager of Process Engineering, as he gives us a closer look at the fine screens at Blue Plains and the role they play in the wastewater treatment process.

Think of the filtration as the first line of defense. Similar to how floss helps keep unwanted material from building up between your teeth, these screens help capture items that don’t belong as wastewater enters the treatment process.

Plastic bottles, rags, feminine hygiene products and other trash can clog pipes, damage equipment and create costly maintenance issues.

As we wrap up , help protect our infrastructure by keeping plastic and other trash out of our drains and waterways. 💧♻️

DC Water has completed the first major step in emergency repairs to a 175-foot section of the Potomac Interceptor near Pennyfield Lock.

After inspections found serious wear and damage, crews installed a new concrete-like geopolymer lining inside the pipe to strengthen it. This work is part of ongoing repairs to 1,700 linear feet of sewer pipe near Pennyfield Lock.

Repairing the pipe from the inside strengthens critical infrastructure, reduces disruption to nearby communities, and helps protect the Potomac River.

Crews are now preparing for the next phase of repairs, which will include installing a new pipe inside the existing one to further strengthen this critical section of the sewer line.
