It's that time of year again. The Global Services Summit is happening this November. We'd love to see you there. Register today.
The Summit is a one-day event which brings together over 300 senior trade officials, policy makers, and business leaders from around the world to discuss timely international trade issues, with a specific focus on services. Cross-border services are growing at a much faster rate than goods trade, an...
Here are some photos of the awesome participants and speakers at an engaging, dynamic CSI's Global Services Summit, 21st Century Rules-Based Trade," attended by over 300 people at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center last month.
"CSI welcomes the signing of the USMCA, a trilateral agreement that contains a number of very positive elements, including strong telecom and digital trade chapters, and a new provision in the financial services chapter prohibiting data localization," said CSI President Christine Bliss.
"We look forward to working with the Administration and Congress to resolve the remaining issues to push the agreement forward," said Bliss. "We also hope that there will be a swift resolution regarding Section 232 tariffs."
Tom Leonardi, Executive Vice President of Government Affairs at AIG, explains why the global trade environment matters to a U.S.-based multinational insurance company like AIG. Trade agreements are particularly important to companies - they can improve market access conditions & lead to a more level playing field, thereby supporting companies' ability to serve clients around the world. He also makes the case for why governments need to work collaboratively (at the WTO and other fora) to resolve traditional services trade barriers and emerging ones, like digital trade restrictions.
It is hard to read a newspaper today without seeing a headline relating to the global trade environment. Whether it’s Brexit, NAFTA renegotiations, WTO reform or US-China relations, so much has been happening over the last year that it has been hard to keep up with all of the developments.
The The Wall Street Journal published "America Has a Surplus in Services," an op-ed by Citi CEO Mike Corbat, where he weighs in on how trade in services contributes to the economy. Corbat notes that last year, the U.S. trade surplus in services came to more than $250 billion, bringing the total trade deficit down to around $550 billion. He notes that in the knowledge-based economy, the traditional division between services and manufacturing is becoming artificial and obsolete. Trade is not only an exchange of hard goods, he says; it is a complex exchange of multiple soft services and hybrid products - part goods, part service. Ignoring this is tantamount to pretending that companies like Amazon.com, Citi, FedEx, Google, and Microsoft don't exist.
Arguments about the balance of trade often focus only on goods. That misses half the equation.
In case you missed the Summit last week, the video of the CSI 2018 Global Services Summit is now available on YouTube! CSI thanks all the Summit participants (including senior trade officials, policy makers, journalists, and business leaders from around the world) for contributing to dynamic discussions and panels around the theme of "21st Century Rules Based Trade" and for making the event a success. CSI wants to especially thank Kevin Hassett, Chairman of the The White House Council of Economic Advisers; Gil Kaplan, Under Secretary of U.S. Department of Commerce for International Trade; and Kim Darroch, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to the U.S British Embassy, Washington DC. We also want to thank the CSI member companies and associations, our counterpart member associations of the Global Services Coalition and the Asia-Pacific Services Coalition, and our colleagues in other U.S. business associations for their sponsorship of and support for the Summit. Also special thanks to CSI's Chair Laura Lane of UPS and her staff for their leadership and support.

The Coalition of Services Industries (CSI) is proud to release its annual Jobs Across America survey of services jobs and the U.S. economy. Services fuel America’s economic growth and jobs, generating more than 77 percent of employment in the United States and 67 percent of GDP. Services are a major component of the manufacturing and agricultural sectors, and they boost the competitiveness of those sectors. CSI has compiled key statistics on services jobs into easy-to-use findings at the national, state, and congressional district levels. These findings are based on 2016 U.S. Census Bureau figures, the latest year for which data is available.
