Singapore Customs and the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) on 10 November 2020 to explore Single Window connectivity to facilitate cargo clearance and enhance supply chain security. With the signing of the LOI, Singapore Customs and CBP would explore the exchange and re-use of trade data via a system link-up between both countries’ trade platforms to bring about greater trade facilitation. The exchange of trade data would facilitate customs declarations by the business community and allow both Customs administrations to better conduct advance risk assessment.

[Singapore Customs and the United States Customs and Border Protection sign Letter of Intent to explore Single Window connectivity]

On 10 Nov 2020, a Letter of Intent (LOI) was signed electronically via a video conference between Deputy Director-General of Singapore Customs, Mr Lim Teck Leong and Executive Assistant Commissioner of US Customs and Border Protection, Ms Brenda Smith.

With the signing of the LOI, both sides would explore the exchange and re-use of trade data via a system link-up between both countries’ trade platforms to bring about greater trade facilitation. The exchange of trade data would facilitate businesses in making customs declarations by pre-populating data and allow both Customs administrations to conduct better pre-arrival risk assessment.

PM Lee Hsien Loong to President-elect Joe Biden: I look forward to working with you to deepen the partnership between our two countries and enhance the United States’ presence in the Asia-Pacific. You can continue to count on Singapore as a friend and partner.

Congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris!

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought on serious challenges for every country, including the United States and Singapore. At this critical time, the duty of a leader is to unite the people, strengthen their trust in the government, and see the nation through the crisis.

With his long history and deep experience as a former US Vice President and US Senator, Mr Biden is well-placed to lead his country through the challenges ahead.

Mr Biden is familiar with the US’ long-standing, multifaceted and robust partnership with Singapore. As Vice President, he visited Singapore in 2013. Three years later, when I visited Washington D.C. in August 2016, he made time to host me to lunch too. (https://go.gov.sg/dzd8i1)

Mr Biden, Singapore looks forward to working with you and your Administration to deepen the partnership between our two countries, enhance the US’ role in Asia-Pacific, and overcome COVID-19. You can count on Singapore to remain a friend and partner. – LHL

Singapore COVID-19-testing "SwabBot" pushes boundaries (and nasal cavities)

Testing has been an essential component of the global response to the #COVID19 pandemic. One innovative Singaporean company, Biobot Surgical, has developed an automated swab-testing robot in collaboration with the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS). The “SwabBot” could limit health care workers’ risk of exposure to the virus and optimize the testing process.

Professor Tan Ngian Chye of the NCCS, a senior consultant on the project, said that the team “wanted something that would save manpower and is less risky for healthcare workers.” He added that they “really didn't expect the response to be so overwhelming.”

Here's how Singapore plans to resume international travel safely

COVID-19 has decimated air travel but conditions are in place for Singapore to restore passenger traffic and revive our air hub. Minister for Transport Ong Ye Kung shares Singapore’s approach to reopening our borders and rebuilding Changi as an air hub.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/10/12/singapore-plans-to-resume-international-travel-amid-coronavirus-pandemic.html

With no domestic air travel market, Singapore "can't wait around for a vaccine" to revive its aviation sector, said Ong Ye Kung, the country's transport minister.

Took part in a virtual dialogue with senior leaders across Asia organised by McKinsey & Company this morning.

The theme was “Reimagining the next normal for Asia and the World”. I shared what we have been doing to see Singapore through this COVID-19 pandemic.

To wrap up our discussion, moderator Oliver Tonby, Chairman of McKinsey & Company Asia, asked for my views on good leadership.

My answer: a good leader must muster a capable team that you can trust, and tap on others who know more than you. You must also be psychologically prepared for surprises and setbacks, and make the best decision based on the knowledge you have. Above all, focus on your responsibilities and fulfil your duty to your people, regardless of any personal consequences to yourself. – LHL

Ashok Mirpuri: Singapore's Strengths in the Midst of COVID-19

Amb. Mirpuri joined American Ambassadors Live host Amb. Rosapepe to discuss Singapore's strong defense, economic and cultural relationship with the United States, as well as Singapore's response to the #COVID19 pandemic and vaccine development.

"The US-Singapore relationship has been very, very stable," in part due to the countries' "common view of the world," he says. Singapore is the regional hub for US military activities and businesses and, in 2004, became the first Asian country to sign a free trade agreement with the United States. Amb. Mirpuri adds that in Singapore's view, the United States is "essentially a resident power of the Asia Pacific." He hopes that the US continues to expand its economic partnerships throughout the region.

On the coronavirus pandemic, Amb. Mirpuri highlights that vaccines are an important part of the global solution, noting that in Singapore, Duke-NUS Medical School is working to develop one. Singapore also serves as a hub for many US pharmaceutical companies and, thus, will play a key role in the manufacturing and distribution of any potential vaccines.

Punching above its weight globally from Singapore

Materials science is a growing field that plays a key role in several engineering applications and industries. Singapore joined the International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS) in 2001, 10 years after its founding in the United States, and will soon be home to its new global HQ.

Former IUMRS President B.V.R. Chowdari credits this development to Singapore's institutional support for materials research, status as a thought leader and capability to host large international conferences and events. IUMRS strives to promote collaboration and its growth depends on diverse talent. Singapore is excited to serve as a hub where the top researchers in the field will meet to further scientific innovation.

The world wouldn’t function without materials. From the plastic spoon a mum uses to feed her baby to semiconductors that power up our smartphones and laptops, we depend on materials in our daily lives.
