Fallen Journalists Portrait Project - Alisher Saipov
TV and Radio Martí are providing unique and unbiased coverage of a campaign recently launched by the League of Independent Farmers and the Cuban chapter of the Latin American Federation of Rural Women (FLAMUR). The campaign called “Sin campo no hay pais” (Without farming, no free country) urges the government to lift what it calls “internal blockades” and allow farmers to free produce, sell and distribute their produce. The pandemic has strained already difficult food production systems and without changes, this campaign argues, famine could strike the island.
Rural women make up a quarter of the world’s population, and the global pandemic is affecting them in unique and disproportionate ways. USAGM networks provide important reporting for and about women living in rural areas.
From Radio Free Asia:
During the good times, Kayan women were popular attractions in the northern Thai tourist city of Chiang Mai. Now they’re once again working in the fields in rural Myanmar. This RFA report looks at how the pandemic has affected the lives of these women and explores the perspective of young women, some of whom are questioning the ancient practice.
Explaining American culture is an important aspect of some USAGM programming. @alhurra’s breathtaking explanation of Columbus Day was short-listed for the Best Use of Technology by the New York Festivals last year and provided audiences with a captivating look at the American drive for exploration.
Fallen Journalist Portrait Project - Leonid Karas
The earliest recorded name goes back to Samaria in 3000 BC, long before the earliest recorded portrait. The power of a remembered name to conjure a person is a power that has been long known. In this faux quilt, the name of Leonid Karas, who was murdered almost 70 years ago, is preserved against a map of Europe at the time of his death: a world divided into East and West at height of the Cold War.

Fallen Journalist Portrait Project - Georgi Markov
RFE/RL contributor Georgi Markov was killed after being stabbed in the leg with an umbrella containing the lethal poison ricin.
He was the target of three separate assassination attempts. The final attempt was staged in London on September 11, 1978.
Our Fallen Journalists Portrait Project series honors Markov by drawing upon the Pop Art movement originated in the late 1960s. The tragic stranger-than-fiction death of Georgi Markov has all the trademarks of suspense genre fiction; exotic settings, international intrigue, and a cold war backdrop.

Fallen Journalists Portrait Project - Nazar Abdulwahid Al-Radhi
RFE/RL correspondent Nazar Abdulwahid Al-Radhi was shot and killed in the southern city of Al-Amarah, Iraq on May 30, 2007, as he was leaving a journalism workshop.
He had been previously threatened because of his work for a “foreign agency” and his uncompromising stand against extremism.
Thirteen years later, our Fallen Journalists Portrait Project series honors his life and commitment to press freedom.
USAGM's Art Director Steve Fuchs uses the art technique scratchboard, which is a form of direct engraving where the artist scratches off dark ink to reveal a white clay layer beneath.
Happy 35th Anniversary to Radio Martí!

USAGM Fallen Journalists Portrait Project - Khamail Muhsin Khalaf
On April 3, 2007, Khamail Muhsin Khalaf was reported missing. Khalaf was a well-known journalist who covered social and cultural life for Radio Free Iraq, the Arabic language service of RFE/RL in Iraq.
On the day of her disappearance, her family received a call from her mobile phone by an unidentified caller who claimed that Khalaf was with him. There was no further communication. Her body was found two days later.
Portrait Series- Ricard de Mello
The USAGM Fallen Journalists Portrait Project represents a chance to revisit and memorialize lost colleagues who gave their life in the pursuit of truth.
All of the fallen were reporters by profession, yet each was a distinct individual, so we will portray each person in a different artistic style.
USAGM Digital Art Director Steve Fuchs used charcoal, colored pencil, marker, and acrylic to create the portrait of VOA Portuguese to Africa reporter Ricardo de Mello who was killed on September 18, 1995.
"When you see a photograph of Ricardo de Mello you are stuck by his high forehead and his intelligent dark eyes," said Fuchs. "Turn of the century German artist Egon Schiele was known for his striking portraits, so this style was a natural choice for de Mello. The distinctive white halo around the final portrait is a classic Schiele technique."
