Black August is a time to honor resistance and tell the truth about what systems do to our bodies.

This we want to honor Mumia Abu-Jamal. Mumia is a former Black Panther and journalist, who was convicted in 1982 of killing a Philadelphia police officer. People have long challenged his conviction, citing racial bias, unfair trial conditions, and suppressed evidence.

Decades in prison have brought serious health issues, including hepatitis C, diabetes complications, and a painful skin condition worsened by delayed care.

His story reflects a larger truth: prisons can create disability through medical neglect, isolation, and harmful conditions. Disability justice means healthcare is a human right, including behind bars.
