Reliving Jimmy Carter John Burl Smith Most people today do not remember the heady days of the 1960s and 70s, as the black power revolution, along with the anti-war movement, became political forces. More importantly, most voters today were not even around to vote when these young Americans fought to change the democrat/civil rights coalition brought Pres. John F. Kennedy into the white House. Pres. Kennedy joined leaders of the 1963 March on Washington and helped launch a new era of Black progress. Malcolm X and the media called these Black leaders “The Big Six”—A. Philip Randolph of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, Whitney Young of the National Urban League, James Farmer of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), Roy Wilkins of the NAACP, a very young Martin Luther King, Jr. of SCLC, and an even younger John Lewis of SNCC (Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee). Pres. Kennedy and these 6 black men crafted the “accommodationist strategy of slow and limited access to civil rights that characterized the 1960s and 70s. “The Big Six” designation anointed these men, as the only voices white and black people should accept, as legitimate leadership in the Black community. However, Malcolm’s assessment was that the “Big Six” led Black people away from freedom. Once, Stokley Carmichael screamed “black power” from the Mississippi delta in 1966, while on James Meredith’s “March against Fear,” from Memphis to Jackson, the world changed forever. Those 2 words—black power—created a schism between the “Big Six” civil rights leaders and young black power activists/anti-war movements coalition. Months earlier Dr. King broke with the “Big Six” and came out against the Vietnam War. Dr. King's decision was attacked by civil rights leaders, and condemned by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who said, “Martin Luther King is the most dangerous man in America.” Dr. King began working with poor Americans and was joined by anti-war and black power activists, but the “Big Six” civil rights leaders rejected his plan. The “Big Six” would not join “Poor People’s Campaign,” which was Dr. King's plan to march a million people to Washington D.C. and lobby for assistance for all poor Americans. Civil rights leaders refused to support the “Poor People’s Campaign,” which meant, Dr. King was virtually the only leader fighting for Poor people. Desperate to keep the “Poor People’s Campaign” alive, Dr. King join poor sanitation workers in Memphis, who were on strike. On the afternoon of April 4, 1968, Dr. King met with the Invaders and made us recruiters for the “Poor People’s Campaign.” This deal happened less than an hour before Dr. King was assassinated. Had he been able to fully implement his poor people’s strategy, many believe, Dr. King would have become the first Black person to run for President of the United States. I believe J. Edgar Hoover realized this months earlier and organized Dr. King’s assassination. Rev. Hosea Williams was one of Dr. King’s inter circle of 4, and he continued Dr. King’s strategy by organizing the first National Black Political Convention, since 1833, in Gary, IN (1972). Rev. Williams’ convention nominated Rep. Shirley A. Chisholm, who became the first Black and woman to be nominated by a national political party for President of the United States of America. Rep. Chisholm’s run for the White House was not the most important thing that came out of her run however; like Black power, it changed politics in America forever. Rep. Chisholm gained approval from the Democratic Party to create the first Black Caucus within the Democratic Party, while at the Convention in Miami, which nominated George McGovern. Following George McGovern’s humiliating loss to Richard Nixon, licking their wounds, Democrats convened a Mini-Convention in Kansas City and the Black Caucus had a major impact on the Democratic Party going forward. Charles Cabbage and I represented the Invaders and black power in Miami and joined the Black Caucus. I traveled to the Mini-Convention with Tennessee State Rep. Derrick “Teddy” Withers’ contingent. The Black Caucus formed a coalition with Hispanics, Native People, women, and poor whites that changed the makeup of representation in the Democratic Party’s rules on delegate selection, composition of delegations and Rules Committee membership. These changes reshaped the Party for young progressives,’ which became Jimmy Carter’s ground game, and were a major factor in becoming President of the United States in 1976. This retrospective preface of Democratic Party history was necessary because the vast majority of Democrats are unaware why, even though progressives support neo-conservative and moderate candidates, are continually maligned, denigrated and attacked by neo-cons and moderates as undemocratic socialists or communists. The reason is neo-cons and moderates are fighting to hold on to power and control the political narrative. Neo-cons and moderates began pushing this divisive narrative when the civil rights movement grew to prominence with the election of Jimmy Carter. Even before Carter entered the White House, as with President Joe Biden today, neo-cons and moderates went on the offensive against progressives. Most Democrats do not remember that neo-cons and moderates supported Hubert H. Humphrey heading into the 1976 election, but southern progressives and remnants of the anti-war coalition that gave Carter viability. Once it became clear Carter would beat Gerald Ford, neo-cons and moderates rushed into the power vacuum they created and began attacking progressives with baseless innuendos, claiming their ideas were too radical and unreasonable or were out of step with America. These not so subtle efforts by strategists and pundits, likes James Carvel, who is still around, trumpet progressive support during campaigns, as with candidate Biden, but once in the White House, they began sniping at progressives to limit their influence selecting cabinet members, setting the legislative agenda and Democratic Party recruitment for future candidates. This time around however, not only have times changed, but tactics as well. With social media, Black Lives Matter and the world’s response to the murder of George Floyd, neo-cons/moderates were sidelined, because of their racist past.
