GW Veterans

A wonderful opportunity to participate in our democracy and honor the service and sacrifice of Post-9/11 Veterans. If you have any questions, please feel to reach out to Mr. George Chewning (a graduate student here at GW) directly at [email protected].

Join fellow GW student veteran George Chewning and the Global War on Terror Memorial Foundation as they partake in a two-day lobbying push for legislative support on April 24th and 25th.

Here's a little information from Mr. Chewning - "A two-day lobbying push for support of our legislation, the Global War on Terrorism War Memorial Act. HR 873 and the forthcoming bill in the Senate sponsors our organization to undertake the fundraising, site selection, design solicitation, and advocacy for a memorial in DC for the GWOT conflict. As the conflict enters its 16th year, we believe that the time is now to begin the work of a national memorial so that our generation of Veterans, their families, and all those who have supported the war effort can have a place to honor, heal, educate, and remember.

The lobbying event is April 24th and 25th and begins with a crash course in citizen-lobbying and a more in-depth explanation of our cause and current progress. Participants will then speak with legislators and their staff during scheduled meetings to garner support for the Memorial. This is a chance for Veterans to explain what a national memorial would mean to them and why they support the effort. I believe this will be a great opportunity for Veterans to learn about advocacy, the political process, and current Veteran issues in government. Additionally, we will provide meals and transportation for all participants."

Learn more at https://www.gwotmemorialfoundation.org/ and feel free to reach out to George Chewning with any questions at [email protected].

Center for Second Service | The George Washington University

George Washington University offers a unique program, The Center for Second Service, which offers veterans training and education to become the next generation of civic leaders. Partnered with Student Veterans of America and Veterans Campaign, The Center for Second Service is one of our April 13th Veteran Day of Service partners. Find out more about this program and sign up for the Day of Service here!

The Center for Second Service has partnered with Student Veterans of America in order to help inform America's student veterans of our programs and help us train the next generation of veteran political leaders.

A Wider Circle - One is Not Enough

A Wider Circle provides housing, furniture, clothing, and food services to needy families in the DMV. They have a O.N.E. (One is Not Enough) program which provides formerly homeless veterans with basic need items and support to furnish their homes. A Wider Circle hosts frequent Veterans Days in their Silver Spring, MD headquarters and are always looking for veterans to volunteer their time and efforts to help their fellow comrades.

Veterans Day has traditionally been a big day at A Wider Circle, as we focus our services on formerly homeless veterans and veterans who have no basic need items or support to furnish their homes. We partner with many veterans organizations and work hard to bring dignity to people who have given so…

A Wider Circle- Founding Story

A Wider Circle, a local non-profit committed to ending poverty in the DMV, has provided food, furniture, clothing and life-skills classes to over 100,000 needy families since 2001. A large portion of people they have helped are veterans and their families. This dynamic organization will be a service site for our April 13th Veteran Day of Service. Read their founding story and we look forward to seeing you on April 13th.
