The hardworking families in the Lowcountry have waited long enough. This is why I voted yes on tonight’s COVID-19 relief package:
Former Representative of South Carolina's Lowcountry in Congress, January 2019 - January 2021
Operating as usual
The hardworking families in the Lowcountry have waited long enough. This is why I voted yes on tonight’s COVID-19 relief package:
I just gave my farewell remarks to Congress on the House Floor.
It's been the honor of a lifetime. Thank you for giving me the chance.
I will be on the House floor shortly to deliver my farewell address to Congress. You can watch live here: https://live.house.gov/

79 years ago, the course of our country's history was changed.
Today, we remember the servicemembers who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor and the heroism and bravery of everyone who stepped up to defend our country in the aftermath.
As I wrap up my final days in DC, I’ve been reflecting on my accomplishments and those of my predecessors. Of all the footsteps I’ve been fortunate enough to follow, none loom quite as large as Joseph Rainey, the first African American to serve in the House and a fellow Representative of the First District. Glad I had the chance to stop by his exhibit in the Capitol today.
Today, the Problem Solvers Caucus is coming together to highlight the ongoing push for comprehensive bipartisan, bicameral COVID-19 emergency relief to help American students, families, small businesses, workers, and health care providers during this crisis.
I receive a fair bit of mail as the Lowcountry’s representative in Congress. But I’ve got to say, this was one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy this letter from ten-year-old Teagan as much as I did and take solace in knowing that with future leaders like Teagan, our world is in pretty good hands.
This is great news and another big win for conservation! The ACE Act will help fund several critical conservation programs right here in the Lowcountry - including the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF).
Most importantly, it will help keep our waterways, wetlands, and wildlife healthy for generations of birders, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy.

Millions of Americans are still waiting on their 2019 tax refund. And many South Carolina families cannot afford to wait any longer. If you're still waiting, you can check the status of your refund using the IRS "where's my refund?" tool at https://www.irs.gov/refunds or call my office at (843) 352-7572 for help.
More than 2 million Americans are still waiting on a refund according to the IRS. In fact, Representative Joe Cunningham's office says it has fielded more than 500 calls alone from worried constituents here in the Lowcountry who need that money. “These aren’t just tax returns, these are....
Congratulations to Charleston native Shepard Fairey for his artwork being featured on Time Magazine. The artwork shows the extra difficulties associated with voting during a pandemic and the sheer determination held by voters to make their voices heard. Let’s honor the artwork of Fairey and make sure we all get out and vote!
It was a pleasure to have the House Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Mark Takano join me for my Veterans Virtual Town Hall. Thank you to all the Lowcountry Veterans for tuning in!
Thank you to Lowcountry Local First and every small business owner who came to this morning's round table. As COVID-19 continues to impact our small businesses, it is critical that Congress provides more relief to help them keep their doors open.

I was proud to help facilitate SC Health’s generous donation of 4,000 masks to East Cooper Community Outreach, which will help keep staff and members of our community safe. And I got to help distribute fresh fruits and vegetables to SC families in need through ECCO’s Fresh & Free Farmer's Market!

TODAY is the last chance to respond to the 2020 census. Right now, only 63% of folks in SC-01 have completed the form.
This is your last chance to get counted and and make sure the Lowcountry gets our fair share of resources for schools, hospitals, infrastructure, housing, and more. It takes less than 5 minutes! Go to http://my2020census.gov to fill out the form and tell any friends and family who haven't yet to do the same!
Today at 2:00 PM, I am participating in the House Natural Resource Committee's virtual forum on the threat of offshore drilling and the need for a permanent ban. I'm thrilled to be joined by Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyserling and Kerry and Mark Marhefka of Abundant Seafood. You can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk0HHLiSa6s&feature=emb_title

Happy 245th birthday to the US Navy! The Navy knows "not self, but country" and has protected our great nation for almost two and a half centuries.
Strong local news outlets are more important than ever and I'm grateful to Lowcountry outlets for keeping folks informed. I am proud to support the Local Journalism Sustainability Act to help them survive COVID-19.
Charleston, S.C. – Rep. Joe Cunningham (SC-01) today cosponsored the Local Journalism Sustainability Act, bipartisan legislation that proposes a series of tax credits aimed at bolstering local newspapers and media in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Local news publications were already facing finan...
Cunningham says as the Lowcountry continues to see large numbers of positive cases of COVID-19, the ongoing high positivity rate indicates that the pandemic is still not over.
It is the honor of my life to represent Parris Island in Congress. For 100 years, tens of thousands of Marines have started their outstanding service to our nation in our backyard - and that won't change on my watch. I'm proud to join my colleagues in the South Carolina delegation to introduce legislation to protect Parris Island by prohibiting federal funds from being used to close the base. Washington, D.C. – Rep. Joe Cunningham (SC-01), who represents Parris Island, today joined Rep. Joe Wilson (SC-02), Senior Member of the House Armed Services Committee, and Congressman Ralph Norman (SC-05), to introduce the Parris Island Protection Act. America agrees: the Lowcountry is irresistible! For the fourth consecutive year, Hilton Head Island has been voted the Number 1 Island in the US by readers of Condé Nast Travel. Charleston was also voted Number 1 Small City in the US, their 10th time on the list. The hospitality of Hilton Head Island and Charleston makes these tourist destinations just feel just like home. Congrats!
I am so proud to have passed the Family Support Services for Addiction Act yesterday, bipartisan legislation that would create a $25 million grant program to help national and local nonprofit organizations provide services for families impacted by addiction.
We know that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated America’s addiction crisis. And we know how critical a role families play in the recovery process for their loved ones – from making insurance claims, identifying treatment options, and exploring how they can best help their loved ones recover.
Ending the addiction crisis takes all of us, which is why I am proud to stand with my colleagues to advance this legislation.
The House JUST passed the ACE Act - major bipartisan legislation to would reauthorize or establish several vital wildlife conservation programs including the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF).
During this critical time for the future of our community and the planet, the ACE Act is a comprehensive victory for conservation funding, access to public lands, and the responsible stewardship of our natural resources. It’s a victory for birders, hunters, and outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. I look forward to President Trump swiftly signing this legislation into law so that we can keep our wildlife and waterways healthy.
When it comes to curbing China’s human rights abuses, violation of international norms, and exploitation of COVID-19, Democrats and Republicans stand united. I joined a small bipartisan group of my colleagues at the White House today to meet with White House Deputy National Security Advisor Matthew Pottinger and discuss how to tackle these challenges.
Parris Island is the crown jewel of South Carolina's many critical military installations and there is nothing I won't do to ensure that it remains open.
As one of the two training depots in the country that makes enlisted Marines, and the only depot that currently makes enlisted female Marines, Parris Island is vital to our national security. I know how critical it is that Parris Island has the resources it needs to continue to prepare our best and brightest, which is why I’ve fought tooth and nail to mitigate flooding concerns, prioritize their climate-resiliency, and provide Parris Island with the resources they need to continue ensuring a strong national defense.
Rep. Joe Cunningham vows that Parris Island will remain open after a report that the training base camp could be closed down. In a report from the Military Times, the U. S. Marine Corps is considering closing the boot camp, as well as the one in San Diego, becausethey cannot support "gender-integrat...
A huge congratulations is in order for Dr. Michael Robert Zile of MUSC for receiving the 2020 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Science, which is the state’s highest honor for research. His work in the fields of heart failure basic, translational and clinical research, and heart failure clinical research have been used worldwide to inform doctors on the best practices in this field.
Dr. Zile serves as the Charles Ezra Daniel Professor of Medicine at MUSC and as chief of the Division of Cardiology at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical center. The Lowcountry is thankful for his service in keeping us healthy and caring for the many veterans in our district.
Michael Robert Zile, M.D., has received the 2020 Governor’s Award for Excellence in Science.
I couldn't agree more. I know just how important all of our Lowcountry military installations -- but especially Parris Island - are to the Lowcountry's culture, economy, traditions, and our national security. Last year, the House passed my amendment to protect Lowcountry military installations by preventing federal funds from being used for base realignment and closure (BRAC). I'll fight like hell to protect Parris Island as well.
The Marine Corps is weighing an idea to shutter the training base — and that can’t happen.
On the House floor today, I paid tribute to the wonderful life of Amari President. While this immeasurable loss echoed throughout the state, the Lowcountry gained comfort from knowing Amari, his smile, and his passion for his local community. I know he was going to be president one day, but the leadership and love Amari left in our hearts will inspire generations to come.
We celebrate #NationalSmallBusinessWeek and the local stores that make the Lowcountry thrive. In the midst of a global pandemic, I implore you to shop local and support the small businesses that make our community vibrant. When you buy local, you are keeping your money in the community you live in and encouraging economic growth for your neighbors.
What is your favorite local shop?

Good news! The House just passed the Fiscal Year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, a bipartisan defense spending bill that includes a 3% raise for our troops and $1 billion for pandemic preparedness. It also includes my bipartisan amendment that provides transitional health care benefits to the brave men and women in the U.S. National Guard who have aided the national response to COVID-19.
DHEC and MUSC are offering no cost, no appointment drive thru testing today and tomorrow at Trident Tech Thornley Campus in North Charleston. Check it out!
This is not the graduation season anyone expected, but it is still an important chance to celebrate the accomplishments of Lowcountry graduates. Congrats Class of 2020! Can’t wait to see what your future holds!
I’ve been hearing from Lowcountry small businesses for weeks that they needed more flexibility on how and when to spend PPP funds and I’ve pushed Congress to act. I’m proud we passed the bipartisan PPP Flexibility Act today to make these necessary improvements.
Access to nature is one of the reasons the Lowcountry is so special. Now more than ever, it is critical we keep it that way by investing in conservation that supports our health and economy. We must fully fund LWCF and restore our parks.
Such an honor to receive the Conservation Leadership Award from The Nature Conservancy South Carolina! We have an obligation to be good stewards of the environment for ourselves, our children, and future generations. That’s why I’ve fought to ban offshore drilling and dangerous seismic airgun blasting off our coast and helped lead the effort to fully fund LWCF.
Make sure you are tending to your mental health during this challenging time. Here are some strategies my family and I are using to take care of ourselves and each other.
As we continue to observe #BlackHistoryMonth, it’s an honor to take a moment to honor the history and perseverance of Black Americans in the Lowcountry. Today and everyday let’s rededicate ourselves to fighting for equality and justice for all.
Today, I voted on a bill that protects 1.3 million acres of wilderness and safeguards public lands for generations of Americans to enjoy. But when it comes to protecting public lands, conservation and national security must go hand-in-hand. These lands not only provide us with outdoor recreation opportunities, they also serve as an important training ground for our armed forces, as they prepare to defend our country overseas. That’s why I’m proud the House passed my bipartisan amendment ensuring our military aviators can continue to use these lands for training missions. Given the mountainous regions our troops presently operate in overseas—both in Iraq and Afghanistan—it is critically important that these training operations continue uninterrupted.
The Census is the most important count of people in our country, responsible for allocating more than $800 billion in federal funding - and it only takes place once every ten years! Help make sure South Carolina receives the funding and representation it is owed at 2020census.gov
I just spoke on the House floor to urge my colleagues to vote for the PAWS For Veterans Therapy Act today. This important bipartisan legislation helps veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress recover and return to civilian life by pairing them with service dogs.
The Lowcountry's own Ranky Tanky are Grammy winners! So, of course I had to celebrate on the House floor. Ranky Tanky has shared Gullah traditions and culture with the entire world and made incredible music in the process. Congrats on your win!
I was humbled to have the chance to honor the life of Beaufort Marine veteran Ronald Voegeli this morning. Ron led a life of service to his family, his community, and his faith. No where was that more clear than with his work for the Disabled American Veterans group. His legacy will continue to touch countless lives in the Lowcountry. God bless you, Ron, and may you rest in peace.
As I said on the floor, getting USMCA across the finish line is critical to maintaining good-paying jobs and a strong economy in the Lowcountry. ✔️ Trade with Mexico and Canada supports nearly 30,000 jobs in our district ✔️ SC exports $6.7 billion worth of goods to our neighbors After months of working with the White House and members of both parties here in Congress, I am proud that the House is voting today to pass this trade agreement.
