SANE Program Development and Operation Guide

OVC commemorates #NursesMonth. This week’s theme is community engagement. Nurses are often the first contact victims have at hospitals. OVC offers a guide to help communities expand or enhance the services their Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program provides to the community.

The SANE Program Development and Operation Guide provides a blueprint for nurses and communities that would like to start a SANE program. For communities with existing SANE programs, the Guide serves as a resource to help expand or enhance services provided to the community.

Remarks as Prepared for Delivery by OVC Director Jessica E. Hart During a Webinar Hosted by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office

“I've heard that COVID–19 is stretching resources and presenting challenges, but also about innovative efforts to continue providing the critical services needed. The [victim services’] field is researching technology resources to deliver services and manage cases; implementing infectious disease responses; and identifying opportunities to share resources. It is very clear to me how resilient, hardworking, and engaged this community is.” Read OVC Director Jessica Hart’s remarks at the Ohio Attorney General’s 29th Annual Conference on Victim Assistance.

"Last year, OJP awarded more than $100 million to help state and local agencies investigate trafficking cases and serve trafficking victims. Grants from my office, the Bureau of Justice Assistance and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention are funding trafficking task forces, training law enforcement and serving thousands of survivors every year, including young victims," remarked Bill Woolf, OVC's Principal Deputy Director, at the Prevalence Reduction Innovation Forum co-hosted by the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. Law enforcement, first responders, and allied professionals are regularly exposed to the traumatic experiences of others. Over time, this work-related exposure can traumatize the responders themselves. OVC’s Vicarious Trauma Toolkit is designed to help law enforcement agencies plan for such trauma and strengthen their response when it happens. General information

Established in 1988 through an amendment to the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) of 1984, the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) is charged by Congress with administering the Crime Victims Fund (the Fund). Through OVC, the Fund supports a broad array of programs and services that focus on helping victims in the immediate aftermath of crime and continuing to support them as they rebuild their lives. Millions of dollars are invested annually in victim compensation and assistance in every U.S. state and territory, as well as for training, technical assistance, and other capacity-building programs designed to enhance service providers’ ability to support victims of crime in communities across the Nation.
