#DGSBuilds! This week, we highlight our Capital Construction Division's completion of the FIRST DCPS Dual Language program located East of the River in #Ward7, Houston ES!

Named after Charles Hamilton Houston, a prominent African-American lawyer who played a crucial role in dismantling Jim Crow laws and helped train future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, the Houston ES Modernization began in Summer 2018 and completed during August 2020, amid the global pandemic.

Split into 2 phases, Phase I began with the interior renovation of the existing structure, including state-of-the-art classrooms and an enlarged library and multimedia center. Phase II concluded the project with a massive addition on the south wing of the site.

Totaling over 82,457sf, this expansion provides adequate room for a multi-purpose cafeteria/gymnasium, health and administration suite, additional classrooms, and the only elementary school in the District with a greenhouse. In the heart of Deanwood, the school will educate approximately 411 students at maximum capacity.

Some of the project features and amenities:

* Greenhouse
* Educational Greenhouse
* Rooftop/Outdoor classroom
* Enlarged library/multimedia center
* Brand new playground and soccer field
* Artwork from top DC artists
* Brand new Multi-purpose cafeteria/gymnasium

This project could not have been completed and delivered without DGS Project Managers Jahdal McKenzie (Phase II) and Doug Dorner (Phase I), General Contractor @mcnbuild , Cox Graae + Spack Architects, and our client-agency partners at @dcpublicschools !

We spy 🕵️‍♀️ a NEW @dcdgs Percent for Art Installation in #Ward6!

This week we recognize artists Quincy Owens and Luke Crawley (@owensandcrawley) who curated and completed the art installation of the ‘Breach’ as apart of Jefferson Middle School Modernization project.

The inspiration for the artwork from the artists is below ⬇️

"Fences signify the foundation of our modern world by demarcating what, historically, has kept one thing separate from another. We decided to approach this conceptual challenge by also realizing that the physical existence of a barrier automatically indicates the two opposing spaces are now inextricably interconnected.

We have designed Breach to fulfill its physical expectations. However, through intentional design and material choice we hope to encourage a vibrant and shared experience between both the students immediately within the school and also the broader community surrounding Jefferson Middle School Academy.

Somewhat paradoxically, if we are going to build a fence, we want to build one that brings communities and people together."

This amazing art installation would have been completed with our the DGS Percent for Art program, managed by DGS Program Manager Sandy Bellamy, DGS School Project Manager Doug Dorner, Ford Martin and Patrick Maloney and our architect and construction partners with @studiosarchitecture and @mcnbuild!

Stay tuned as we highlight more #PercentForArt artists and their pieces throughout facilities we build, maintain, and sustain across the District.

I have been quietly pleased with everyone's professionalism, dedication and passion. That includes full-time DC employees and their contractor colleagues.
I'm not sure who to thank, but I just got the newsletter from the DC Office of Tax and Revenue and was pleased to see one of the changes to taxes are, "Feminine hygiene products: The sale of feminine hygiene products is exempt from sales and use taxes." Well done DC!! Thanks Muriel Bowser! Way to remove the "pink tax."
