OSSE Scholars is a program of the District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent for Education. Scholars are high-achieving students selected to participate in prestigious summer college programs. The program is needs-basd and provides full funding for study at partner universities. Students are selected on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular activities and leadership skills. Interested students submit an online application and complete a one-on-one interview. Once students are selected as OSSE Scholars, they must apply and be accepted to a partner university summer program. In the 2012-2013, the program received 231 applications and selected 55 Scholars. The OSSE Scholars application is available in the fall of each school year. Please visit the OSSE Scholars website for more information.

Mission: OSSE Scholars provides high-achieving, academically-motivated students who exhibit financial need with the opportunity to attend selective summer college programs. As an OSSE Scholar, students attend top-tier universities across the country for rigorous summer courses. The program offers early exposure to college-level academics, navigating a college environment, and, at certain universities, earning college credit.

Today we are celebrating three outstanding young men who will spend their summers at Duke Summer Session.

Jalen, a junior at Friendship Collegiate Academy Public Charter School, will study Programming & Problem Solving for four weeks at Summer College.

Also juniors, Keion and Cristian are aspiring businessmen and will be spending three weeks at Summer Academy in the Global Executive program. Keion attends Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy (Washington, DC) and Cristian attends E.L. Haynes High School.

Duke has been a popular destination for OSSE Scholars and one of our 2018 alumni, Aaron Spruill (who was also a Friendship Collegiate scholar) is currently attending Duke as a freshman!!

We couldn't be more proud of Aaron and excited for these three to experience Duke in Summer 2020.

This year, we have a record high *seven* OSSE Scholars heading to Syracuse University Summer College!!! We love the flexibility that Syracuse offers our OSSE Scholars -- they can choose a six week program or two, two-week courses with credit and non-credit options.

Charnese and Aaliyah are doing six week, for-credit courses in Psychology and Forensics. Charnese is a sophomore at Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy (Washington, DC) and Aaliyah is a junior at KIPP DC College Preparatory PCS

Our other five Syracuse Scholars have each selected two courses and will be on campus for a month this summer:

Temitayo, a sophomore at Eastern High School, will study Cyber Law and Pre-Med & Health Professions.

Quadri, a junior at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, will study Filmaking and Creative Writing.

Londell, a junior from Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy (Washington, DC) will study Graphic Design and Computer Animation & Game Design.

Angie, a budding nutritionist and junior at E.L. Haynes High School, will study People & Cultures of the World and Food, Farm & Futures.

R'Nasia, a junior from Friendship Tech Prep Academy, will study Creative Writing and Computer Animation & Game Design.

Congratulations Scholars!

We have five OSSE Scholars attending Brown University this summer!

Three OSSE Scholars will be attending the traditional [email protected] program which allows them to choose a topic they would like to study for three weeks while living on campus:

- Makayla is a junior at KIPP DC Kipp College Prep Academy and will be taking "So You Want to Be a Doctor?" This intro to medicine course has been a very popular choice with OSSE Scholars over the years. Students in the course in prior years were even able to observe an actual surgery!

- Momona, a junior at DC International School, and Keith, a junior at KIPP DC's Somerset Academy, will both study Political Theory and the Law. They are already incredibly passionate change-makers and leaders in their high schools and communities and we can't wait to see where their summer experience takes them!

This year, for the first time, we have two Scholars who will be attending [email protected] for English Language Learners https://precollege.brown.edu/english-language-learners/

Both Isabel and JinHong are juniors attending the International Academy at Cardozo High School. Isabel will study "Food for thought: Personal to Global Perspective on Nutrition" while JinHong will be taking a course that will hone his reading, thinking and writing skills as he tackles a daunting subject: the college essay.

Congratulations OSSE Scholars! We are so excited for your [email protected]!

Last summer, a group of Brown University Scholars were among our first travelers of the season and it was a rocky start. They had a flight that kept getting delayed, sat in the airport in DC for 17 hours, missed their campus orientation and arrived to campus after 2am.

This morning though, on the last weekend of Scholars departures for 2019, these three left on an early morning flight to Providence right on time! A promising start to their three weeks at Brown University Pre-College Programs for sure ☺️
