ICYMI: Last month, @SenBobCasey hosted a @SenateAging committee hearing about how ABLE accounts help people with disabilities save money & keep their benefits. During the hearing, Sen. Casey urged his colleagues to expand access to ABLE accounts and highlighted his bipartisan legislation ABLE Age Adjustment Act, which would do that. Across the country Republicans are using the myth of widespread voter fraud to push restrictive voter ID laws and limit the ability of millions of Americans to vote. The President is the chief perpetrator of this unsubstantiated claim, and even went as far as to create a “commission on election integrity. Yesterday, the Administration disbanded this commission, which was never anything more than a scheme to suppress the voting rights of certain Americans. In November, Senator Bob Casey released a report detailing how states are using the widespread voter fraud myth to make it harder for Americans to vote and how voter ID laws can hurt older adults and Americans with disabilities. Did you know that both the House & Senate versions of the GOP’s tax plans could open the door to attacks on Social Security benefits and include a sneaky tax hike? Their scheme would base inflation adjustments in the tax code on chained CPI-U, which if also applied to Social Security COLAs would cut benefits for seniors and persons with disabilities. ICYMI: Last week, Sens. Bob Casey (D-PA) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) released a report, Barriers to Voting for Older Americans: How States are Making it Harder for Older Americans to Vote. Suppressive voting laws and issues of accessibility affect tens of millions of older Americans and people with disabilities. The report details how strict voter identification (ID) laws, closure of voting locations, inaccessible polling places and limits on early voting and absentee ballots are preventing seniors and people with disabilities from casting votes. This morning I joined Meals on Wheels volunteers to help prep and deliver meals to homes in Allentown. These volunteers do incredible work supporting our seniors and it was a privilege to see that work first hand. I also want to thank Irene G and Irene M for inviting me into their home and sharing their stories with me. I will continue to fight against cuts to Meals on Wheels and other programs that support senior nutrition and prevent senior isolation.

As ranking Member of the Senate Aging Committee, I hear often from our seniors. Just last night, I participated in a tele-town hall with members of AARP Pennsylvania. And, let me tell you, they are scared about what this Republican scheme will mean for their health care. Last night, Fred from Morrisville, Pennsylvania told me he is scared because his premiums will go up under the Republican health care “scheme.” AARP estimates that adults aged 60 and over could see their premium increase an average of $3,200 because of the age-tax. Because of this “age tax” and the reduction in premium assistance, the independent, non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that under the Republican “scheme,” a 64-year old earning $26,500 would see her net insurance premium jump from $1,700 per year under current law to somewhere between $13,000 and $16,000 per year.

ICYMI: @SenatorBobCasey recently introduced the Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Act, at the #GrandRally2017, to provide custodial grandparents with the support they need to help them raise thriving grandchildren. As an increasing number of older adults are stepping in to care for their grandchildren as a result of the opioid crisis, this bill would help connect them with resources to navigate school systems, address mental health issues, and build support networks.

The number of children being raised by grandparents is on the rise due to the opioid epidemic. Sen. Bob Casey is fighting to ensure there is federal support for programs that help grandfamilies.

“When it comes to programs like Meals on Wheels, I believe the administration’s proposed budget cuts are misguided to say the least. I believe that Democrats and Republicans can agree on issues like that. We have a great deal to work together on to address our nation’s infrastructure, so that we have improved accessibility...so those who are aging or have disabilities can continue to get around in their communities. And finally, enhancing access to technology and broadband so that those in rural communities can stay connected to their loved ones.”-Senator Bob Casey.

On the heels of President Trump’s budget, which cuts the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services by 18%, I'm hosting a roundtable with police chiefs from across the nation to discuss the need to fund prevention, treatment and recovery services for prescription opioid and heroin use disorders. Severe cuts to HHS could impact the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), making the work of police officers and first responders, who are on the front lines of the opioid crisis, all the more difficult. Despite $1 billion investment to tackle the opioid crisis contained in the 21st Century Cures law, draconian budget cuts to HHS could wipe out any resource gains.

Meals on Wheels Community Services of NEPA

Meals on Wheels programs in Pennsylvania provide over 100,000 seniors with nutritious meals and daily wellness checks. These programs allow seniors to live in their homes and avoid expensive long term stays in hospitals and nursing homes. On Saturday, I visited the Meals on Wheels Community Services of NEPA and was proud to meet with some of the volunteers and staff who keep the program running. Thank you to everyone Meals on Wheels Community Services of NEPA and to the dedicated members of every Meals on Wheels program in Pennsylvania.

@SenatorBobCasey is here to visit and discuss the importance of Meals on Wheels (and we are putting him to work lol)

Senator Casey Releases 50 State Report on the Impacts of TrumpCare on Older Americans

For older Americans, Trumpcare is highway robbery. It strips older Americans of the ability to afford health coverage while lining the pockets of the wealthiest individuals and companies. The Trumpcare scheme is a profound betrayal of our seniors, penalizing people for getting older and neglecting the most vulnerable members of our families. The information I am releasing today shows that individuals in every state are worse off under this plan.

Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), Ranking Member of the Senate Special Committee on Aging, released a 50 State Report detailing the impacts of TrumpCare on older Americans. These individual state fact sheets make clear the consequences of TrumpCare’s irresponsible policies: imposing an age tax on those betw...

As a result of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), nearly 1.4 million pre-Medicare adults (age 50 to 64) who were previously uninsured gained health insurance coverage with the assistance of a premium tax credit, and between December 2013 and March 2015, the uninsured rate for Americans age 50 to 64 dropped by nearly half. The Republican proposal threatens to roll back these coverage gains. Read more here:

The Affordable Care Act Protects Millions of Older Adults with Pre-Existing Health Conditions

The AARP released information today related to the millions of older adults with pre-existing health conditions. The report states “[t]he Affordable Care Act protects individuals with preexisting conditions by prohibiting insurance companies from considering people’s health when they apply for coverage. Without these protections, four out of 10 adults ages 50 to 64—or about 25 million people in this age group—could be denied health coverage because of a preexisting condition if they sought to buy an individual plan.”

How about a page for Special Committee on Aging Senators. Most stay too long.
Fraudulent guardianships and trust or probate fraud are a bipartisan issues that effects all vulnerable wealthy adults. The legal community is sponsoring financial exploitation through their influence of the courts and at the expense of the public. Now is the #MeToo moment for this movement!
Many thanks to Senator Casey and the other Dems on the Aging Committee for fighting changes to Medicaid!
