Like many others who share these identities, I wasn’t always aware of them. I had to learn how to recognize experiences and privileges that I once took for granted as ‘normal.’" This month guest blogger and DEI Vice Chair @LarkinWillis shares her DEI Story.

We closed out the #PWIA2020 yesterday with a special Veterans Day tribute featuring a panel of female veterans in our Been There, Done That session sponsored by State and Federal Communications, Inc. Mary Legere, former Senior Intelligence Officer for the U.S. Army wrapped our session with a call to action we can all put in practice: “Hold yourself accountable for your potential and push your friends to be responsible to go reach their potential”. Thank you for your service ladies and sharing your powerful stories with us all!

Yes we do need elevators in every subway station. Every subway should be accessible to all people. The 36th Avenue N train station at 31street in Astoria LIC is two flights high up and we cannot get up there. They closed our station for many months to add bells and whistles and did not give us the sorely needed elevator. Disabled people cannot get up to the platform with their wheelchairs. Mothers cannot lug baby carriages up or down to the station because it is dangerous. After climbing up two stories, many are out of breath and cannot handle it. My 91 year old relative has spine pain and cannot climb all those stairs and the sad thing is that Blooming-dale's is only three train stops away where she can go browse and get a hot cup of tea or a cup of soup and half sandwich lunch special at the"Forty Carrots" restaurant just to change her day from the usual pains and aging difficulties. Please give us the elevator, build it on the sidewalk outside of Bank of America where we can old ride it up to the second story platform. Please. Taxis are so expensive and parking in Manhattan is also very expensive and add the congestion fare and we are doomed to stay home in Astoria and LIC all the time.
