I met with the Nevada Orthopaedic Society to discuss a number of important issues, including safeguarding healthcare providers from impending Medicare payment cuts and removing obstacles to care for Nevadans on Medicare Advantage plans. I believe that given the massive shock our nation’s healthcare industry has weathered over the past year, Congress should do all it can to support our healthcare professionals, and I appreciate the Nevada Orthopaedic Society representatives making the trip for this productive conversation.

This October, I am proud to join my fellow Italian-Americans in recognizing our shared heritage and history. Together, we remember our ancestors and we pay tribute to their achievements. We also celebrate the strong Italian-American partnership that binds our countries together economically and culturally. I am honored to introduce this bipartisan resolution again this Congress with my fellow co-chair Rep. Bill Pascrell and look forward to the passage of this legislation, a testament to our shared Italian-American heritage.

The energy sector is crucial to our economic growth, not only in Nevada, but also nationwide. I met with NV Energy to receive an update on their latest projects and priorities, which demonstrate the Nevada company’s innovation and excellence. We had a good discussion on NV Energy’s efforts to improve right-of-way and transmission line maintenance to help protect our communities from the growing threat of wildfires.

I enjoyed meeting with Frank Woodbeck, the College of Southern Nevada’s Executive Director of Grants and Special Projects, to discuss a number of important pieces of legislation in Congress. CSN, the largest public college in our state, provides Nevada’s students with the skills necessary for success after graduation. We had a productive meeting on the importance of career and technical training programs as our workforce needs continue to grow.

The historical significance of the Carson City Mint is an integral part of who we are. Today, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the last Morgan Dollar minted in the U.S. It is only fitting that the Carson City Mint played such a significant role in numismatic history and in this Commemorative Morgan Silver Dollar Coin Program. When Congress passed the 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act, not only did it preserve this American legacy, but it also put more money back into the pockets of American taxpayers. Today, I was honored to present a 2021 Commemorative “CC” mint mark Morgan Dollar to the Nevada State Museum. I thank U.S. Mint Director Ryder, whose collaboration has been integral to the legislation authorizing this program and the inclusion of the “CC” mint mark. Thanks also goes to Director Freedman of the Nevada State Museum in hosting this historic moment.

Dixie Fire | Welcome to CAL FIRE

As the #DixieFire in Eastern California continues to spread, I wanted to provide an update for anyone whose family may be impacted. The Dixie Fire started on July 13, has burned about 432,800 acres, and is 35% contained. On July 20, FEMA approved a request submitted by the State of California for a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG), which allows federal funding to cover up to 75% of eligible firefighting costs, including field camps, equipment and supplies, and mobilization costs.

If you've lost any property as a result of the fire, Plumas County has set up a Local Assistance Center (LAC) to provide recovery direction, assistance, and resources to residents and property owners. From 1870-1893, gold and silver coins with the iconic “CC” mark were minted at our very own Carson City Mint, the site of which today is the Nevada State Museum. In 2020, the sesquicentennial of the Carson City Mint’s establishment was celebrated, with U.S. Mint Director David Ryder traveling to our state to attend the festivities.

In 2021, another historic milestone is being celebrated – the centennial commemoration of the Morgan silver dollar and the Peace silver dollar. The Carson City Mint produced Morgan silver dollars from 1878-1893, and these today are among the most sought-after U.S. coins by numismatic collectors. After legislation I helped draft was signed into law by President Trump earlier this year, the Mint began producing the first new Morgan and Peace dollars in many years. The law also allows the Mint to continue minting these coins in future years if consumer demand remains strong.

Two of the coins in the 2021 series honor the Carson City and New Orleans Mints with “CC” and “O” privy marks, in a nod to the important contribution these Mints made to our nation’s numismatic history. Having been born and raised in Carson City, I am glad this crucial chapter of Nevada’s early history is being honored with the inclusion of the iconic “CC” mark in the program. At the Philadelphia Mint, where the Morgan Dollars honoring the Carson City and New Orleans Mints are being produced, I enjoyed visiting with the designers, engravers, and production staff integral to this new program.

Since the Mint funds itself, it is one bureau capable of actually putting more money back into the pockets of American taxpayers. Anything the Mint makes that exceeds their operating cost is returned to the Treasury General Fund. This year alone, the Mint projects that the 2021 Morgan and Peace Silver Dollar program will generate over thirty million in revenue. Since FY16, the U.S. Mint has transferred nearly two billion in seigniorage (the difference between the face value and cost of producing circulating coinage) to the Treasury General Fund to help finance the national debt, which is especially critical in this time of exploding government spending.

REPS. AMODEI, LAMB INTRODUCE BIPARTISAN BILL TO ENSURE ALL VETERANS HAVE ACCESS TO CARE IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS

Today I introduced the Veterans’ Access to Care Concerning Inoculations Needed in Emergency Situations (VACCINES) Act, bipartisan legislation that would ensure that all veterans, regardless of their status within the VA health care system, would be considered eligible to receive testing and vaccination services in the event of a future national public health emergency. As we have seen throughout the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, a virulent and highly-transmissible disease does not discriminate based on an individual’s age or health status, and removing bureaucratic barriers to diagnostics and life-saving vaccines is the most effective way toward getting back on the road to recovery. I look forward to swift consideration of this vital piece of legislation by the House of Representatives.

Congratulations to Reno’s Savanna Guidas for winning CD-2’s 2021 Congressional Art Competition. It was a pleasure to meet Savanna, her mother, and her teacher last week in my Reno office to learn more about Savanna's artwork, “Drop in Nevada”, which showcases her signature spirals and hearts that are hidden within the drawing. Savanna’s winning piece will now be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year. Congratulations Savanna on a job well done and thank you to the record number of talented young artists who participated in this year’s competition. I commend all of you on your outstanding work!

I’m honored to have received the 2021 Global Travel Advocate Award from the American Society of Travel Advisors this week. In Nevada, our world class entertainment and events typically draw in more than 50 million visitors each year, generating billions of dollars to support good-paying jobs and fuel our local economies. Unfortunately, Nevada’s tourism-based economy has been disproportionally impacted by COVID-19. This is why I recently introduced the Securing Access for Venue Equity (SAVE) Act, legislation that would expand the eligibility for the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant Program administered by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Learn more about the SAVE Act and my efforts to help Nevada’s tourism-based economy recover from COVID impacts here: https://bit.ly/3hOCXaX

I’m pleased this critical legislation has the support of all my Nevada colleagues in the House and I will continue to be a champion in Congress for this vital industry.
