On May 25, Costa Rica became the first Central American country to legalize marriage equality. LGBTI activists took the their case challenging Costa Rica’s same-sex marriage ban to the Constitutional Court, which eventually struck the law down after consulting with the Inter-American Court on Human Rights. We will hear from Congressman Enrique Sánchez–currently the only openly LGBTQ elected official at the national level in Costa Rica–about this historic moment in his country and about the importance of political participation.
