Through its training and professional development programs, Victory Institute assists hundreds of individuals who go on to influential careers in politics, government and advocacy each year. Many of the Victory Institute’s trainees join the more than 1,000 openly LGBTQ elected and appointed officials now serving around the world. Founded in 1993, Victory Institute is a non-partisan, tax-exempt educational and research organization.

Coming out can be a deeply personal, sometimes painful, but almost always rewarding event in the life of any LGBTQ person. For an elected official, coming out carries an extra spotlight that keeps far too many leaders in the closet, with untold consequences for our community’s rights. LGBTQ Victory Institute’s Coming Out Project has helped several leaders come out while serving in public office, from former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg to Florida State Rep. Shevrin Jones. Its David Bohnett Leaders Fellowship provides outstanding LGBTQ elected and appointed officials with executive leadership training at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Previous fellows include U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema, California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara and Colorado state Representative Leslie Herod.
Victory Institute also provides fellowships and internships on Capitol Hill for LGBTQ young people seeking careers in policy or politics, and a fellowship for LGBTQ people of color and transgender leaders interested in running for office.
