Biden to sign executive order aimed at promoting competition across the economy

Joint Economic Committee Chairman Congressman Don Beyer on President Biden's Executive Order that promotes competition and fairness in our economy:

“Over the last 30 years, the United States has experienced a rise and concentration of corporate market power that has harmed consumers, workers and small businesses.

“Across industries—including healthcare, agriculture, telecommunications, transportation, technology, and financial services—the market power of the United States’ largest companies has grown significantly, as they have essentially swallowed small businesses and erected barriers to entry for new competitors.

“Instead of furthering shared prosperity, this consolidation of corporate power has concentrated profits among the wealthiest at the top while reducing America’s economic dynamism, depressing workers’ wages, and constraining innovation.

“President Biden’s Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy represents a major step in the right direction, advancing a whole-of-government approach to promote an economy where small businesses can compete, consumers are protected, and workers have the capacity to bargain for better pay and working conditions.

“This is what a serious executive order aimed at supporting American workers and restoring fairness to the economy looks like, and I applaud the Administration’s decisive action.”

Biden is set to sign an executive order on Friday aimed at promoting competition across the U.S. economy — including measures that target big tech companies, aim to lower prices for consumers and call for greater scrutiny of mergers across several industries.

Op-ed: Police misconduct can be deadly. It also costs taxpayers millions every year

One year ago today #GeorgeFloyd was murdered and the U.S. is still trying to understand the true costs of police misconduct.

Check out a new op-ed from Congressman Don Beyer and
Tim Kaine on how we can measure the human and economic costs of police misconduct:

On the anniversary of George Floyd's death, it's time to consider the economic cost of police misconduct, write Rep. Don Beyer and Sen. Tim Kaine.

How Can Congress Fix The Racial Wealth Gap It Helped Create?

"In mid-May, members of the United States Congressional Joint Economic Committee...heard testimony about why Black people have less wealth than white people. Chair Congressman Don Beyer (D-VA) introduced the hearing saying, 'Much of the racial wealth divide today is explained by…decades of systemic racism and exclusion in our country, with policies such as redlining, restrictive covenants and other forms of housing discrimination playing a role.'”

In mid-May, members of the United States Congressional Joint Economic Committee (which was constructed to be bipartisan in 1946) heard testimony about why Black people have less wealth than white people.

As Hiring Undershoots Expectations, Biden Urged to Go Big With $10 Trillion Jobs Plan

"'Progress is being made, but it is clear that we have a long way to go before our economy is back on solid ground,' said Congressman Don Beyer (D-Va.), chair of the Joint Economic Committee, said in a statement."

"Millions of people are out of work, and the unemployment rate is rising. The real risk isn't doing too much—it's doing too little."

05/07/2021

Joint Economic Committee Chairman Congressman Don Beyer on the April jobs numbers that were released earlier this morning:

“Today’s unexpected jobs numbers underscore the uncertainty that still exists as a result of the economic damage caused by the pandemic. Progress is being made, but it is clear that we have a long way to go before our economy is back on solid ground.

“While the American Rescue Plan provided much needed emergency relief for the American people, big, bold action is required to recover the 8.2 million jobs we are still down since the beginning of the pandemic and ensure sustained economic growth. President Biden’s American Jobs Plan and American Families Plan, and their once-in-a-century investments in physical and human infrastructure, represent this type of big, bold action.

“Ten million Americans are still looking for work, and many of them have been since the beginning of the pandemic. In addition, the unemployment rate rose last month, and unemployment in general remains much higher than it was before the pandemic—especially for Black and Latino workers. This is why it is more important than ever to reform our nation’s unemployment insurance system—with benefits tied to economic conditions—so those who are trying to pay their rent and put food on the table get unemployment insurance when they need it and for as long as they need it.”
