Conference Of Minority Transportation Officials - COMTO COMTO's vision is to see the diverse faces of America equally reflected in all levels of the transportation industry. Founded in 1971, the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) was created to provide a forum for minority professionals in the transportation industry.

COMTO's mission is to ensure opportunities and maximum participation in the transportation industry for minority individuals, businesses, and communities of color, through advocacy, information sharing, training, education, and professional development. The organization membership includes individuals, groups, transportation agencies, private sector corporations, non-profit organizations, and Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUBs).

Mission: The mission of COMTO is to ensure a level playing field and maximum participation in the transportation industry for minority individuals, businesses and communities of color through advocacy, information sharing, training, education and professional development.

Quick Facts:
-61% of public transit systems will need to reduce service and furlough employees without an additional $32 billion in emergency federal funding from Congress.
-77% of American voters support emergency funding for public transportation so that front line workers can get to jobs and to help the economy recover.
-74% of American voters approve of the new Administration and Congress taking action to fix the public transportation infrastructure crisis facing our nation.
-Nearly one-half of public transit industry businesses (47%) expect to lay off employees if at least $32 billion in additional federal funding is not provided.
-Nearly one-third of transit industry businesses (31%) are concerned that they may go out of business if additional federal funding is not provided.

Welcome COMTO Richmond—our 35th chapter! Lamar Bates, Manager of Safety, Training and Labor Relations/DSLE for Keolis Rail Services Virginia will lead COMTO Richmond.

This chapter will serve Richmond, Virginia and the surrounding areas to create a community of support among transportation professionals, agencies, corporations, small businesses and other like-minded organizations to maximize opportunities for minorities in the transportation industry. Sponsoring organizations include Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority (RMTA), Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).

Secretary Boyd was named Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Transportation in 1965 and co-chaired the Johnson Administration task force, which later recommended the creation of a cabinet level Department of Transportation.

Lyndon B. Johnson chose him to lead a new department integrating vast air, sea and land systems. He also led Amtrak and the Illinois Central Railroad.

This year’s theme, Increasing Access and Opportunity, celebrates 30 years of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and 75 years of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).
