#NASA SCaN will usher in a new era of space communications with the launch of the Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) mission later this month. LCRD will demonstrate how optical technology can move large volumes of data at higher speeds than traditional radio frequency communication. To get this data to Earth, ground stations known as Optical Ground Station (OGS) -1 and -2, located in California and Hawaii, will be ready to help!

New findings from #NASA's #JunoMission provide a fuller picture of Jupiter's turbulent atmosphere. Using NASA SCaN's Deep Space Network, Juno scientists found new observations regarding Jupiter's Great Red Spot.

With Juno traveling low over #Jupiter’s cloud deck at about 130,000 mph (209,000 kph) Juno scientists were able to measure velocity changes as small 0.01 millimeter per second using a #DSN tracking antenna, from a distance of more than 400 million miles (650 million kilometers). This enabled the team to constrain the depth of the Great Red Spot to about 300 miles (500 kilometers) below the cloud tops.

LAUNCH UPDATE: NASA's SpaceX Crew-3 mission is now targeting 1:10 a.m. EDT (05:10 UTC) on Wednesday, Nov. 3, for its next launch attempt due to elevated winds and waves in the Atlantic Ocean along the Crew Dragon flight path.

Weather conditions are expected to improve for a Nov. 3 launch attempt, and the 45th Weather Squadron forecast predicts an 80% chance of favorable weather conditions at the launch site.

Since 1958, #NASA has relied on radio wave technology to “talk” with missions in space. Today, we’re developing a better way to get spacecraft data back to Earth with optical (laser) communications!

Scheduled to launch next month, the Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) will send and receive near-infrared laser beams to and from Earth as NASA’s first long-duration test of optical communications technology.

SCaN’s Deep Space Network is #NASA’s international array of giant radio antennas that enable communications to faraway spacecraft like Lucy. Lucy will travel almost four billion miles over 12 years, that’s a lot of ground—or space—to cover. Luckily, the #DSN is up to the challenge!

Returning to the moon requires collaboration with our commercial and government partners, especially when it comes to managing spectrum use. With the increase in users in the lunar region, spectrum management and planning needs to be centralized, effective, and efficient.

NASA’s Lunar Spectrum Manager, Cathy Sham, has been busy sharing NASA’s pro-active approach to lunar spectrum management with industry. Cathy has recently spoken at the Ka-Band Conference, a National Spectrum Management Association hosted webinar, and a seminar hosted by the Brazilian Ministry of Science & other partners. Cathy discussed the agency’s efforts to lead lunar spectrum management and the importance of pre-coordinated efforts for frequency planning early in the mission design phase.
