Protecting human health and the environment 🌎🌊☀️🌱
EPA's purpose is to ensure that:
- all Americans are protected from significant risks to human health and the environment where they live, learn and work;
- national efforts to reduce environmental risk are based on the best available scientific information;
- federal laws protecting human health and the environment are enforced fairly and effectively;
- environmental protection is
an integral consideration in U.S. policies concerning natural resources, human health, economic growth, energy, transportation, agriculture, industry, and international trade, and these factors are similarly considered in establishing environmental policy;
- all parts of society -- communities, individuals, businesses, and state, local and tribal governments -- have access to accurate information sufficient to effectively participate in managing human health and environmental risks;
- environmental protection contributes to making our communities and ecosystems diverse, sustainable and economically productive; and
- the United States plays a leadership role in working with other nations to protect the global environment.

Every community deserves access to reliable, safe water. EPA Administrator Michael Regan heard from community members in McDowell County, West Virginia on the longstanding challenges they face with inadequate drinking water and wastewater systems — and saw their resilient, innovative solutions to make up for a lack of resources.
Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and EPA's joint initiative with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (Closing America’s Wastewater Access Gap), we are partnering with this community - and rural communities across the country - to make needed improvements in water infrastructure.
Currently our Toxics Release Inventory – a public database tracking the management of toxic chemicals – includes a loophole that allows facilities to avoid reporting info on PFAS when used in small concentrations.
EPA has proposed a rule that would close this loophole, so we can better confront the health risks of PFAS.
EPA News Release: EPA Proposes Rule to Enhance Reporting of PFAS Data to the Toxics Release Inventory
Today EPA Administrator Michael Regan is in McDowell County, West Virginia –the next stop on his tour. He’ll hear firsthand from communities impacted by drinking water and wastewater inequities, discuss solutions, and further EPA’s commitment to bring clean water to all Americans.

Have you ever thought about what happens to the rainwater or melted snow after a storm? 💧🌧️❄️
We call it "stormwater" — and if it's not properly managed, stormwater can collect various pollutants (like trash or chemicals) and bring this pollution to nearby waters.
If there's too much stormwater, it can also lead to sewage overflowing into communities or waterways during heavy storms.
Managing this runoff is a complex environmental challenge, and some stormwater systems are aging and overwhelmed by increased stress from climate change.
That's why EPA is investing $52 million for communities to improve stormwater infrastructure — helping to reduce flooding and prevent polluted waterways.
We're committed to working with states to ensure the grants reach communities who need it most.
