Many of us came to Washington to work in the government or military; some to attend school; others found jobs in companies and organizations with Alaska ties, and still others followed love interests or other pursuits that led them to DC. Regardless of how we got here, we all make a point of getting together several times a year to celebrate our common love of the 49th State. **2014 Board of Directors** Celeste Leroux, President VACANT, Vice President Christine R. Great video to show when someone inevitably asks you what it is like when it's "light all the time!"

This is what it looks like in Anchorage, where the sun never really sets this time of year

Alaskans in D.C. gathered this evening to honor our 2019 Cherry Blossom Princess, Andrea Wagner, of Wasilla. Andrea is a college student who was also an exceptional intern in my D.C. office. We couldn’t be more proud of her. Our gathering closed with a powerful rendition of the Alaska Flag Song by Ryan Sheldon, of Anchorage, who is studying opera at Belmont University. Thanks to the Alaska State Society for organizing a fun evening.

Tonight I attended a reception hosted by the Alaska State Society celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Alaska’s statehood. In 1958, after a long and contentious battle, the Senate passed the Alaska Statehood Act by a vote of 64-20. The Act was then signed into law by President Eisenhower, officially making Alaska a state on January 3, 1959. It was particularly special commemorating the Last Frontier’s journey towards statehood with this year’s Alaska Cherry Blossom Princess, Andrea Wagner, who was nominated by Senator Dan Sullivan.

Wow! Way to represent AK Ayesha and Demiko! #AKPride

Alaska’s-own Ayesha Abdul-Jilil won GOLD in the shot put at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi yesterday. She followed that up today with a bronze medal-winning dash in the 100m. Our other star athlete, Demiko Colbert, of Fairbanks, had an impressive fifth-place finish in the 200m. Ayesha and Demiko, we could not be prouder of your achievement and hard work. Look forward to celebrating with each of you when you’re back home!
