American labor has raised the nation’s standard of living.
Labor activism has brought us in closer alignment with our national ideals of economic and political #democracy.

Happy #LaborDay! Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, “the holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.”

ILO Office for the United States

ILO is a specialized agency of the United Nations.

In 1920 the ILO established an office in Washington, one of the first four cities to have an ILO office along with Paris, London, and Rome. The ILO Office for the United States represents the ILO and ensures that its core priorities and interests, policies and experience are disseminated among key stakeholders.

Mission

The primary goal of the ILO today is to promote opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work, in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity. The mission of the ILO Office for the United States is to be a strong, visible, and proactive presence in the United States in order to effectively engage members of government, employers’ organizations, and workers’ groups and other international organizations in social dialogue and building partnerships for these purposes.

Last week, our CEO Nina Smith spoke at the launch event for the International Labour Organization report, "Ending child labour, forced labour, and human trafficking in global supply chains." The report confirms GoodWeave’s work in the field and underscores the importance of supply chain mapping and the need for social protection and remediation. You can see a full report summary here: https://www.alliance87.org/news/child-labour-and-human-trafficking-remain-important-concerns-in-global-supply-chains/ L: Mark Mittelhauser, Associate Deputy Undersecretary, Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB), U.S. Department of Labor R: Kevin Cassidy, Director, ILO Office for the United States (ILO-USA)
“There is a multitiered approach to women and girls success in the workforce: education, challenge gender stereotypes, governmental intervention, active labor market policies, family responsibilities, and to invest in people with a future of work plan.” -Kevin Cassidy, ILO Yesterday, we had the pleasure of jointly hosting the Education, Skills, and Employment: Changing the Status Quo for Women and Girls Worldwide Symposium with The Brookings Institution, the International Center for Research on Women, the ILO Office for the United States, UN Girls' Education Initiative, and UNICEF USA. Through panel conversations and break out discussions, dialogue focused on how to bridge the parallel conversations on youth workforce readiness and education-work transitions for young women. Here are some key points and takeaways from the day! -The biggest threat to national security today is unemployment; job creation is necessary and we need to have active labor markets and a human-centered agenda for a decent future of work. -Future of work may see a need for 75-375 million workers to transition to new occupations that require new technical, higher cognitive & socio-emotional skills. -Having the courage to speak out and the courage to fail are some of the skills necessary to close the women's empowerment and youth employment gap. -Building career pathways for youth is critical for retention. -We must be reminded that in addition to the root causes of girl drop out from the school to work pipeline, we need to also consider the role of government in ensuring that the work place is safe, gender sensitive, and non-discriminatory toward women. Thank you to our co-hosts, all the panelists, and everyone who came and contributed to such a thoughtful day of dialogues!
