The annual Justice for Juniors forum theme is “Recidivism and the Transition of Juveniles into Adult Corrections.”
In the District of Columbia, rates of reoffending for juvenile offenders are a little higher than the average when compared with other jurisdictions. With as many as 40% reoffending, it is likely that many of these juveniles will be transferred to adult corrections (National Center for Juvenile Justice). Based on this startling number, it is imperative that this issue be brought to the forefront.
The Justice for Juniors forum brings together prominent advocates, policy specialists, law enforcement and legal experts to discuss an array of issues affecting juveniles in the Washington, DC Metro Area. The panelists will represent a cross-section of criminal justice experts, and this year, they will also serve as co-sponsors of the forum. There will be presenters from the US Justice Department, the Sentencing Project, the D.C. Department of Corrections, Campaign for Youth Justice and Parent Watch, Inc.
Justice for Juniors is sponsored by the Luther Rice Baptist Chapel and is coordinated by the GW Protestant Campus Ministry Association, and co-sponsored by the Council of Churches, Greater Washington, the Catholic University Chaplaincy, the University of Maryland Hillel and Baptist Collegiate Ministry. It focuses on reducing juvenile recidivism through tutorials and mentoring. Participating universities include, The George Washington University, Catholic University and the University of Maryland.
