Mission: In order to shape the debate around a sensible and workable immigration reform, the “Bridge Project” will engage Republicans, Democrats, and others to work in a bi-partisan way to achieve the goal of passing into law a just and humane immigration reform. We seek to do this by providing first-hand accounts on the impact of the lack of a functioning immigration system has on immigrant communities, the economy, and country as a whole.

It has come to our attention that a certain individual (“Individual 1”) has been tweeting about an ICE operation. We wish to remind you of a number of things:
1. The purpose is to create panic. Don’t panic.
2. Remember that ICE needs a removal order to deport people. If you do not have a removal order, ICE can only start a legal effort to remove you. If you have an order, talk to a lawyer now about reopening your case.
3. ICE needs a warrant signed by a judge to enter your home. Unless you let them. Don’t let them enter your home without a warrant signed by a judge.
4. You do not have to answer any questions. You do not have to sign anything.
5. If you are afraid of returning to your home country, say so.
6. You have rights. You have allies. You have options. Learn them.

Trump once welcomed a visit from immigrant 'Dreamers.' Now, they anxiously await his next move

“They got brought here at a very young age, they’ve worked here, they’ve gone to school here. Some were good students. Some have wonderful jobs. And they’re in never-never land because they don’t know what’s going to happen,” Donald J. Trump told Time magazine this month. "We’re going to work something out that’s going to make people happy and proud.”

Gaby Pacheco strode into Trump Tower’s gilded lobby on a mission to convince the businessman to back immigration reform and help young people like her who were brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

The Forgotten History Behind America's Immigration Debate

Scholarships for DREAMers - TheDream.US

Dear Friends,

President Obama’s recent announcement changes the lives of millions of people.

Approximately 300,000 additional young adults will be eligible for temporary relief from deportation and a work permit. Many of these young people want nothing more than to get a college education, join the U.S. workforce, and support their family and community.

But one thing will stop them short. And that is their inability to access federal and state aid to help them afford a college education.

This is where YOU come in. By giving to TheDream.US you enable us to provide scholarships for DREAMers. And while we know that no one scholarship program can begin to fulfill the need, we also know that, by providing even one student with the opportunity to get a college education, we can and will impact not only that student’s life but the lives of that student’s family and friends and, in doing so, we will help build the economic and social prosperity of this nation.

This is why we made a commitment to “build the American Dream one student at a time.”

We welcome this challenge and ask you to help us send more motivated and eager DREAMers to college.

Here are three ways you can help:
1- Give to our Indiegogo Campaign and share our link

2- Get the word out about our scholarship program. Like us on FB, Twitter

3- Share this message on social media

Thank you for believing in our young immigrant youth and their power to help us build a great nation.

Experts: Obama has authority to protect more migrants from deportation

"The president also could expand his controversial 2012 program aimed at stopping the deportation of many young immigrants brought to the United States as children, the panel of law professors and other legal experts said during a telephone news conference.

That program -- DACA -- could be broadened to include the parents and other relatives of those young immigrants, said Cristina Rodriguez, a professor at Yale Law School and a former U.S. Justice Department attorney."

President Barack Obama has the legal authority to stop the federal government from deporting undocumented immigrants whose children or spouses are U.S. citizens, a panel of immigration law experts said Tuesday.

Obama weighs business-friendly immigration actions.

President Barack Obama soon after Labor Day is expected to announce executive actions to refine deportation priorities and to potentially expand a program that gives safe harbor and work permits to qualifying illegal immigrants. But the White House also is reviewing actions on issues that are priorities for businesses, according to administration and other officials, an effort that has received less notice. Businesses are mostly concerned with legal-immigration policy.

The White House is considering changes to immigration policy aimed at helping businesses, part of a broad review of procedures that also is likely to provide new protections for people now in the country illegally.

MALDEF and Outten & Golden have sued Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, Inc. for refusing to hire #DACA holders because DACA holders are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. This practice is illegal as DACA holders are lawfully authorized to work in this country.

1) If you were discouraged from applying to Northwestern Mutual because you knew of this policy and understood you were ineligible to work there; or
2) If you were denied work by Northwestern Mutual due to a lack of U.S. citizenship or permanent residency (a “greencard”),

Please contact MALDEF here. All information will be held strictly confidential. There is no charge or obligation for our review of your case. #NorthwesternMutualDiscrimination

Mr. Obama, Your Move

"We don’t know the details. Mr. Obama and the Department of Homeland Security have not yet supplied the who, what, when or even, officially, whether. But Mr. Obama has promised to respond to Congress’s refusal to act on immigration reform. And the most obvious thing is to lift the threat of deportation from immigrants who should be the lowest priority for removal: those with citizen children, jobs, clean records and strong community ties. Some reports put the size of that group at four million to five million.

In truth, Mr. Obama is well within his authority to madden the right. His power to conduct immigration policy is vast. Congress has given the president broad flexibility and discretion to enforce immigration law. It has also given him the resources to deport about 350,000 to 400,000 people a year, as Mr. Obama has done, relentlessly."

Since Congress refused to act on immigration reform, it is the president’s duty to use his executive authority to protect unauthorized immigrants from deportation.

With Congress divided, Obama to go his own way on immigration

"Sources familiar with the matter told CNN that one potential option would expand the deferred deportation program of 2012 for so-called DREAMers -- children brought to America illegally by their families.
Other possible steps include granting some kind of legal status to the foreign parents of U.S. citizens, and allowing some undocumented immigrants to apply for temporary work permits, the sources said."

With Congress divided, President Obama will go his own way on immigration.

Fast track of migrant children's cases stirs alarm among judges, lawyers

"Due process means a fair process that enables a person to come before a judge or adjudicator and explain what has happened, such that a judge can make a decision to whether the individual qualifies for the laws' protections," said Gregory Chen, a director of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. "If we do it in condensed way, it's rushed justice that results in no justice at all."

A majority (69%) of Americans say that children arriving from Central America should be treated as refugees and allowed to stay in the U.S. if authorities determine it is not safe for them to return to their home countries.

Majorities of Democrats (83%), independents (66%), and Republicans (52%) believe these children should be treated as refugees, but Republicans are more divided; 42% of Republicans believe they should be treated as illegal immigrants.

New PRRI survey examines American attitudes on the immigration unaccompanied minors from Central America, including the causes of the immigration, as well as attitudes on the policy solutions.

White House pursuing plan to expand immigrant rights

Officials signaled strongly Friday that Obama's move would shield from deportation large numbers of immigrants living in the country illegally, as advocacy groups have demanded.

Roughly 5 million of the estimated 11 million people who entered the country without legal authorization or overstayed their visas could be protected under a leading option the White House is considering, according to officials who discussed the proposals on condition of anonymity.

Even as President Obama grapples with the crisis of immigrant children arriving at the Southwest border, White House officials are laying the groundwork for a large-scale expansion of immigrant rights that would come by executive action within weeks.

Most Migrant Children Released Into Care of Relatives

A total of 30,340 children have been released to sponsors — primarily parents and other relatives — from the start of the year through July 7, according to the Office of Refugee Resettlement

Sponsors must be vetted by social workers, including a criminal-background check, and must also promise to make sure that the child appears for required immigration court appearances.

So far this year, about 30,000 children who crossed illegally have been taken in by parents and other relatives in state with large Central American communities.
