Mariners -

Good evening. Even during these unprecedented and trying times of COVID-19, some of you remembered to inquire about the state of the Academy and it's MIDN...thank you. I wanted to share a link to a teleconference held on Tuesday, April 7th with the USMMA Superintendent - RADM Buono and the National Parents Association (approx. 500 ppl in attendance). It was very informative, answers were provided to questions on logistics, impact to class schedule, graduation, Sea Year and others.

https://www.facebook.com/904716693063648/posts/1410845092450803/?vh=e&d=n

Some of the points made that may be of interest include:
- He praised the USMMA staff in ramping up so quickly to support a virtual/distance learning curriculum in order to keep the MIDN on track.
- USCG adjustment to sea time credit for classes of 2020 and 2021; 1.25 days will be given for every day on a commercial vessel
- Preferred communication with the Academy is social media at this time.

Recap was made about Jim Tobin's ask of how USMMA alumni can help support the MIDN in adjusting to impacts of COVID-19. Nothing specific at this time, but in the event that we are asked, I thank you in advance for stepping up to assist in any way that we can.

For those of us who are still working, I'll repeat what my boss said last week, "We certainly must count ourselves among the lucky ones with our jobs secure and a steady paycheck headed our way every few weeks. Many of our friends and neighbors are not as fortunate, and for them uncertainty about the future is a very real concern. I encourage each one of us to assist where we can and however we can."

Another tough week indeed, I hope that you had a happy Passover and/or enjoy a happy Easter this upcoming Sunday. Please stay safe.

Acta Non Verba,
Laila Linares, USMMA '06
President - Kings Point Club of Washington, D.C. (KPCWDC)

Rear Admiral Buono conducted a teleconference with nearly 500 parents last evening. He discussed various topics with the attending parents and took questions ranging from the current state of the Academy with respect to the delayed return of the Regiment of Midshipmen, to the current state of graduation for the Class of 2020. It's worth a listen. Let us know what you think. Like and Share at U.S. Merchant Marine Academy - USMMA.

Dear Member of the KP Virginia Family, I am doing some data collection to see if we can get 350 volunteers to commit to purchasing a VA DMV specialty license plate. We've blown past 50 in the first few hours based on an email the AAF sent out. The cost for the plate is $25 for a non-personalized, and $35 for a personalized plate and would look like the VA plates for the other FSAs. If you are interested, please send Justin Harts '98 an email. No money is due at this time - just checking interest... [email protected]
