Drinking Water

Drinking water, also known as potable water, is water that we consume without high risk of harm or illness. The Mid-Atlantic water supply is generally considered as a low-risk water supply. Only a small portion of the water supply is used for drinking or food preparation. A greater percentage of the water supply makes landscaping, irrigation, and washing or cleaning activities possible. Danger Zones

When rain falls from the sky, it lands on many different surfaces across the entire Mid-Atlantic region, from Richmond to Philadelphia. If a raindrop lands on a plant, it evaporates into the air. If it lands on a crop field, it soaks into the ground and nourishes the plants. However, when rain falls on the road or another hard surface, it rushes into a drainage system or a nearby stream. Construction Trash

The Hazards of Construction Trash Construction sites are a maze of hundreds of potential environmental hazards. Beginning from the moment, a construction site is cleared of trees, roots, trees and stumps are often dumped into landfills with other types of trash. When the first bulldozers begin to plow through the soil, this type of heavy duty equipment can disrupt naturally occurring water aquifers with fill dirt if construction contractors do not properly follow EPA compliance regulations. Do Dumpsters Trash Our Water

Do dumpster trash our water -- well the are certainly handy for the disposal of a large quantity of trash or construction waste, but they aren't always the most environmentally-friendly waste management solution. While they're great for keeping garbage confined until it can be hauled away, they're often exposed to adverse weather conditions-- things like rain, hail, and snow. Consider what happens when trash and debris from construction sites and dumpsters without dumpster covers mingles with precipitation. [ 538 more words. ]

Illegal Dumping Puts Clean Water at Risk

Illegal Dumping You're driving down the road with a car filled with leftover paint and equipment from a friend's backyard project. Up ahead is a small construction site that's worker-free for the weekend. Its big dumpster is hard to miss and easy to drive right up to. You don't want to have to pay the local dump's $50 fee. And that construction site dumpster is sitting right there. [ 520 more words. ]

Best Practices for Storm Water Management

One of the tasking activities when doing construction is to preserve the natural environment. There has been a lot of concern from environmentalists about the degradation of the natural environment during construction. All contractors and builders should ensure EPA compliance in all their construction activities. EPA provides guidelines for storm water run off management that are mostly responsible for environmental degradation. [ 599 more words. ]

Storm Water Discharge Outlets

Storm Water Discharge Outlets And How To Spot Them When people think of "workplace safety" at construction sites, they think of fall protection or overhead hazards. Proper "lock-out/tag-out" procedures. Hard hats and steel toed boots. And properly filled out daily reports. But it's unlikely that they'll be thinking about storm water. Isn't that going to be the problem of the future property owner once the construction crew is finished and long gone? [ 597 more words. ]

Source Water Protection

The water used in our homes originates from some point. It could be a spring, rivers, underground aquifers or even lakes. These are the source waters. The relevant authorities should implement and enforce measures for source water protection to ensure that the water being supplied to homes and public institutions is safe for consumption. Citizens within the locality of the water source also have the responsibility of ensuring that the source is protected from contamination and pollution. [ 475 more words. ]

Outdated Clean Water Permits

Maryland And Virginia Builders Are Using Outdated Clean Water Permits Clean water laws in Maryland and Virginia require builders to acquire clean water permits before work begins. Builders must account for the damage that is done to the environment during their projects, and the clean water permits of old have few restrictions. Companies have been found working with expired clean water permits, but government officials are not taking action against these businesses. [ 549 more words. ]

Don’t Drink Paint

Many people do not realize that less than one percent of the fresh water on earth is actually available for use as drinking water or for other household purposes. This source water can be found in rivers, lakes, streams, and ground water. However, storm water run off from construction sites can easily pollute any of these sources. This is why SWPPP compliance is essential when planning any sort of construction project. [ 447 more words. ]

Storm Water Runoff and Pollution

Storm water runoff and pollution pose a troublesome threat to our source water. Storm water runoff occurs when precipitation does not absorb naturally into the ground and the resulting water runs into bodies of source water, such as streams, ponds, lakes and rivers. Often, this runoff will carry pollutants and debris along waters natural flow, thus posing a risk of contamination of source water, which leads to a host of environmental problems. Dumpster Runoff & Toxins

Consider the risks posed by the interaction of storm water and uncovered construction dumpsters. We know builder operations produce a great deal of refuse during construction activities, new builds, demolition and house renovations. Dumpsters are the primary means to manage and dispose of the refuse - and all too often the dumpster runoff & toxins flow into our source water eco-systems. [ 603 more words. ]
