Blue Dog Leadership Urges House Leadership to Bring Up Senate-Passed Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill for a Vote as Quickly as Possible, Opposes Unnecessary Delays

Today, the Co-Chairs of the Blue Dog Coalition—Rep. Tom O'Halleran, Congressman Ed Case, U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy, Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, and Congressman Kurt Schrader—issued the following statement on the Senate passage of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act:

"The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is a landmark piece of legislation that will deliver the largest long-term investment in our nation’s infrastructure in nearly a century, and it will ensure our nation can remain at the cutting edge of international competition. From ensuring every American can connect to high-speed internet to fixing our crumbling roads and bridges, this bipartisan bill will deliver much needed results from rural to urban America. Now that the Senate has done its job, we reiterate our call for House leadership to follow suit and bring the bipartisan infrastructure legislation to the House floor for a vote as a standalone bill as quickly as possible. The Co-Chairs of the Blue Dog Coalition remain opposed to any effort to unnecessarily delay consideration of these critical infrastructure investments, which will create good-paying jobs, keep American businesses competitive, and grow our nation’s economy. The House should move now to deliver this legislation to President Biden’s desk for his signature and give the American people the results they need and deserve."

Moderate Democrats call for 9/11-style panel to probe COVID-19 origins

In order to prepare for future pandemics and protect our nation, we must examine our country's preparation for and response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We must also understand how the virus originated and how its initial spread began in China. This investigation must be conducted in a bipartisan manner. That's why our members sent a letter to House and Senate leadership calling for the establishment of a 9/11-style commission to assess what the United States did wrong and what we did right in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Blue Dog Leadership Calls for Increased Defense Funding, Other Priorities to Strengthen Nation’s Defense

The United States is in the midst of a great power competition with China. Our public and private sectors have suffered a string of cyberattacks. We continue to face evolving threats from state and non-state actors around the world. The threats we face today underscore the necessity to equip our military with the support they need to better protect our country. The increased level of defense funding as proposed by President Joe Biden is reasonable. Now is not the time to hamper our military with arbitrary budget cuts as we face the evolving threats of today.

Be sure to read our full letter signed by Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill, Rep. Tom O'Halleran, Congressman Ed Case, U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy, Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, and Congressman Kurt Schrader, outlining our defense funding priorities to ensure a strong national security for the American people.

Throughout our nation’s history, both parties have recognized that innovation spurs the need to expand new infrastructure to rural America to keep our country at the cutting edge of international competition, such as rural electrification under President Franklin Roosevelt and the expansion of the interstate highway system under President Dwight Eisenhower. If done right in the current recovery, investment to bring every community online would be a major step to strengthen the rural economy, address the rural health care crisis, and empower rural workers all while strengthening the larger American economy. However, our success is contingent on measures to ensure taxpayer dollars go where they should and funds are sent to areas of the country that are in need.

That's why, under the leadership of Rep. Tom O'Halleran, we sent a letter to House leadership calling for the funds to expand broadband in the pending infrastructure bill to be flexible. This would ensure that broadband funds are delivered to areas of the country where they are most needed.

Biden meets with congressional leaders in push for infrastructure bill

The Blue Dogs commend President Biden for his continued efforts to bring both parties together to negotiate a bipartisan, bicameral deal for infrastructure legislation. We urge President Biden to continue these talks as long as Republicans continue to act in good faith in the negotiations. Negotiation takes time, and both sides will give and take throughout this process. The American people want results, and they want leadership—not rhetoric. That requires putting politics aside and working together to deliver good-paying jobs and a 21st-century infrastructure to all corners of this nation, from urban to rural America. More than anything else, it will require the pursuance of legislation that can make it to the President’s desk for his signature.

Blue Dogs Back Bipartisan Legislation to Establish a Commission to Address Domestic Terrorism

Congress must take on the threat of domestic terrorism with a sense of urgency. In addition to investigating the January 6 attack in a bipartisan manner, Congress must also fully investigate the broader domestic terrorism threat to produce the information we need to better protect the American people. Blue Dogs push for further action on domestic terrorism

For years, we have sounded the alarm about the threat posed by white supremacist organizations and other violent domestic extremist groups. The threat of domestic terrorism has never before been as stark as it is now, in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

That’s why we’ve endorsed Congressman Brad Schneider’s Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act, which would enhance the federal government’s efforts to prevent domestic terrorism, and U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy’s Security Clearance Improvement Act, which would disqualify participants in the Jan. 6 attack on the United States Capitol and members of the QAnon conspiracy movement from obtaining or maintaining a federal security clearance.

U.S. federal debt to exceed size of economy even before Biden stimulus is approved, CBO says

The truth is that Congress should have taken steps to get our fiscal house in order well before the first case of COVID-19 arrived in the United States. The pandemic demonstrates the national security risk posed by running a nearly $1 trillion deficit during times of economic expansion under Republican leadership. Now, the COVID-19 crisis has compounded the repercussions of Republican fiscal recklessness.

We must spend what is necessary to end the current health and economic crisis. However, once we get through this crisis, it will be even more important to make the necessary tough decisions to get our fiscal house in order. Our children and grandchildren are depending on us to get this right.

Congress passes massive stimulus package as virus rages

It took too long for this deal to come to fruition and it is far from perfect, but it will send immediate, necessary relief to struggling families and businesses. It achieves a significant victory for American workers and businesses by securing an expansion of the Employee Retention Tax Credit, a job-saving measure our coalition endorsed to help keep businesses open and workers tethered to their jobs and their benefits. Leadership of both parties must continue to talk to one another in the months ahead to ensure the American people never see another lapse in emergency relief for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. We must continue these talks to find common ground on additional measures that are commensurate to the scale of the ongoing health and economic crisis.

Blue Dog Leadership Calls for House, Senate to Stay in Session Until COVID-19 Deal is Reached

Now is the time for everyone in Washington to put politics aside and come to a bipartisan, bicameral agreement to deliver relief and necessary resources as quickly as possible. Our constituents deserve results—not partisan nonsense. Neither the House nor the Senate should go home for the holidays until a bipartisan, bicameral agreement is made on a fifth COVID-19 relief package and a bill is sent to the President’s desk for a signature. This should not be Congress’ last act in response to the ongoing crisis. A deal today should be a building block toward another deal under the leadership of President-elect Joe Biden.
