Blue Dogs Back Bipartisan Legislation to Establish a Commission to Address Domestic Terrorism

Congress must take on the threat of domestic terrorism with a sense of urgency. In addition to investigating the January 6 attack in a bipartisan manner, Congress must also fully investigate the broader domestic terrorism threat to produce the information we need to better protect the American people. That's why the Blue Dogs have endorsed Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill's Commission on Domestic Terrorism Act, which is a commonsense, bipartisan solution that will help us fully address the threat posed by domestic violent extremist groups.

Blue Dogs push for further action on domestic terrorism

For years, we have sounded the alarm about the threat posed by white supremacist organizations and other violent domestic extremist groups. The threat of domestic terrorism has never before been as stark as it is now, in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

That’s why we’ve endorsed Congressman Brad Schneider’s Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act, which would enhance the federal government’s efforts to prevent domestic terrorism, and U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy’s Security Clearance Improvement Act, which would disqualify participants in the Jan. 6 attack on the United States Capitol and members of the QAnon conspiracy movement from obtaining or maintaining a federal security clearance.

U.S. federal debt to exceed size of economy even before Biden stimulus is approved, CBO says

The truth is that Congress should have taken steps to get our fiscal house in order well before the first case of COVID-19 arrived in the United States. The pandemic demonstrates the national security risk posed by running a nearly $1 trillion deficit during times of economic expansion under Republican leadership. Now, the COVID-19 crisis has compounded the repercussions of Republican fiscal recklessness.

We must spend what is necessary to end the current health and economic crisis. However, once we get through this crisis, it will be even more important to make the necessary tough decisions to get our fiscal house in order. Our children and grandchildren are depending on us to get this right.

Moderate Democrats push for vaccine funding separate from sprawling Covid relief bill

We can’t fight the pandemic at the pace of politics. There's overwhelming need for speed to get vaccines out the door and into the arms of the American people. That’s why we’ve called for a vote on a stand-alone bill focused on vaccine development and distribution right now while a comprehensive COVID-19 relief package makes its way through Congress as fast as possible.

Centrist Blue Dog Democrats have leverage in narrow House majority

As a group of pragmatic Democrats, we are always looking for the solutions that can be implemented into law to deliver lasting results for the American people. In a time of multiple daunting crises, that approach is required to move our country forward.

Congress passes massive stimulus package as virus rages

It took too long for this deal to come to fruition and it is far from perfect, but it will send immediate, necessary relief to struggling families and businesses. It achieves a significant victory for American workers and businesses by securing an expansion of the Employee Retention Tax Credit, a job-saving measure our coalition endorsed to help keep businesses open and workers tethered to their jobs and their benefits. Leadership of both parties must continue to talk to one another in the months ahead to ensure the American people never see another lapse in emergency relief for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. We must continue these talks to find common ground on additional measures that are commensurate to the scale of the ongoing health and economic crisis.

Blue Dog Leadership Calls for House, Senate to Stay in Session Until COVID-19 Deal is Reached

Now is the time for everyone in Washington to put politics aside and come to a bipartisan, bicameral agreement to deliver relief and necessary resources as quickly as possible. Our constituents deserve results—not partisan nonsense. Neither the House nor the Senate should go home for the holidays until a bipartisan, bicameral agreement is made on a fifth COVID-19 relief package and a bill is sent to the President’s desk for a signature. This should not be Congress’ last act in response to the ongoing crisis. A deal today should be a building block toward another deal under the leadership of President-elect Joe Biden.

House Approves Blue Dog-Backed Bipartisan, Bicameral Legislation as Part of NDAA

GOOD NEWS: The House just passed two Blue Dog Coalition-endorsed bills as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The two bipartisan, bicameral pieces of legislation are Rep. Jim Cooper's Taxpayers Right-To-Know Act and Rep. Anthony Brindisi's Seeding Rural Resilience Act.

A key part of the Blue Dog Blueprint for Fiscal Reform, the Taxpayers Right-To-Know Act was also included in the Blue Dog Coalition’s four-point plan to protect taxpayer dollars spent by Congress to address the COVID-19 crisis. The legislation will provide Americans with more information on how federal tax dollars are being spent and help eliminate duplicative and wasteful government programs.

Endorsed by the Blue Dog Coalition last year, the Seeding Rural Resilience Act will help to reduce the growing rate of suicide in rural communities across the country.

Georgia’s Scott to make history in taking Agriculture gavel - Roll Call

We congratulate Congressman David Scott on his election to be Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, and Congressman Jim Costa on a well-run race. The Blue Dog Coalition was proud to have two of its finest members as candidates in this race.

A longtime member of the Blue Dog Coalition, Rep. Scott knows that in order for the next economic recovery to be successful, it must run through our rural communities. A strong rural economy means a strong American economy. Rural Americans are proud of their tight-knit communities, their hard work, and their way of life. They provide us with the material to make the clothes on our backs and produce the food that’s on our tables. They’re looking for a level playing field—a fair shot to work their way up the ladder, create prosperity in their communities, and participate in the country’s economic growth. Rural America has a champion in Rep. Scott, who has a deep understanding of what it takes to strengthen our rural communities, and we look forward to working with him to make that happen.

Trump says he's calling off stimulus negotiations with Democrats 'until after the election'

To walk away from negotiations is to turn your back on the American people while tens of millions of people struggle to get by on unemployment and major companies begin to lay off and furlough even more hardworking Americans through no fault of their own. This is shameful, and we hope President Trump reverses course quickly and returns to the negotiating table. This time of crisis demands action, not partisan nonsense. Failure to reach a deal is not an option.

It is good news that talks between Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the White House have resumed. With a divided government, only bipartisan solutions will deliver much-needed support to the American people, and that requires principled compromise by both parties.

Now that both the White House and House Democrats have put forward serious proposals, it's all the more incumbent on the leadership of both parties to reach an agreement on a fifth COVID-19 relief package that is commensurate with the scale of this unprecedented public health and economic crisis. That's why we sent a letter to Speaker Pelosi urging her to continue the discussions over the weekend until a deal is achieved.

Rural Opportunity Roundtable on the Outdoor Economy

NEW: Today, Representative Xochitl Torres Small, Co-Chair of the Blue Dog Task Force on Rural Opportunity, and Rep. Joe Cunningham, Co-Chair of the Blue Dog Task Force on Infrastructure and Job Creation, participated in a Rural Opportunity Roundtable discussion on strengthening the outdoor economy.

Both leaders in conservation, Reps. Torres Small and Cunningham led efforts in the House of Representatives to pass the bipartisan Great American Outdoors Act, which was signed into law by President Trump. That landmark conservation legislation permanently and fully funds the Land and Water Conservation Fund and addresses priority repair needs in our national parks and other land management agencies.

Reps. Torres Small and Cunningham were joined by the following special guests for the discussion:

• Robert Boyles, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources
• John Cornell, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership
• Sarah Lundstrum, National Parks Conservation Association
• Jessica Turner, Outdoor Recreation Roundtable

Blue Dog Coalition Backs Bipartisan COVID-19 Relief Framework, Reiterates Call for Leadership to Negotiate Bipartisan Deal

With people’s lives and livelihoods on the line, we must do all we can to work together and pass a bipartisan, bicameral COVID-19 relief package. Passing hyper-partisan bills that fail to meet the moment is politics at its worst, and refusing to find common ground while families and small businesses suffer is a dereliction of duty. The Blue Dogs applaud the Problem Solvers Caucus for doing the hard work to find bipartisan consensus in order to meet this moment, and we urge leadership of both parties to do the same as swiftly as possible.

Rural Opportunity Roundtable on Small Business and Entrepreneurship

NEW: Congressman Jared Golden, a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, moderated a Rural Opportunity Roundtable discussion on small business and entrepreneurship.

As a member of the House Committee on Small Business, Rep. Golden has fought to protect small businesses from the economic downturn of the COVID-19 crisis by introducing legislation such as the Blue Dog-endorsed RESTART Act. That bipartisan legislation would provide America’s small businesses with the flexible, targeted relief they need to survive a prolonged economic downturn and provide jobs.

Rep. Golden was joined by the following special guests for the discussion on small business and entrepreneurship:

• Travis Ferland, The Rangeley Inn & Tavern
• Matt Dunne, Center on Rural Innovation
•John Arensmeyer, Small Business Majority
