Hi everyone!

An email was just sent out to everyone regarding two items:

As an alternative to career development, I have attached a survey for student's availability for next semester. Next semester (Spring 2018), TSAU will begin hosting bi-weekly meetings. In these meetings, we will discuss topics such as the different agencies and opportunities available in the IC (intelligence community), skills and workshops for improving students' candidacy for getting a job or internship in intelligence, and discussions on current events pertaining to national security. We want to make these meetings as convenient as possible and to do so, we ask that you fill out the following survey as you cement your spring class schedule. If there are any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to email Kate Minium at [email protected] or to reach out through our page.

Instead of a helpful article for career development, I've chosen to include information on some helpful resources that you, as a student, have access to for free here at American University. The most helpful and under-appreciated of these resources is The Office of Information Technology's workshops. OIT hosts workshops that teach students and faculty how to use systems like Excel, Powerpoint, CommonSpot, etc. All of these are free and will aid in your professional development. Click the link below for more information.

http://www.american.edu/training/index.cfm

We only have one event that should be mentioned before break. When we come back on Monday, the 27th, more will be posted with more information.

Below is a great article from former DIA Intelligence Analyst, Matthew Burton, on getting a job in the Intelligence Community. He makes some great contrasts between the depiction of the IC in popular culture and the reality of the position, but here are just some general take-aways:

-Intelligence analysis is a research job. (Paperwork)
Its not as glamorous as TV would lead you to believe (though it can be exciting).
-You might be researching something that seems unnecessary and ambiguous. People often forget that the IC is also about defending our nation from all threats-- not just the ones in the headlines.
-Do not underestimate the importance of clear, concise writing skills!!
-Skills in linguistics or cyberwarfare are coveted in the IC (chemistry, nuclear physics, biology, computer science).
-Read Richard J. Heuer's The Psychology of Intelligence Analysis. It can be requested from the AU Library at https://catalog.wrlc.org/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=14176662 or an older version can be read online for free at https://www.cia.gov/library/center-for-the-study-of-intelligence/csi-publications/books-and-monographs/psychology-of-intelligence-analysis/.
-Get published.
-Remember: Intelligence analysis isn't a skill-- research is a skill.

We recommend you read the whole article here:

Hey everybody! I am an AU alum and current student at the Institute of World Politics, as well as serving at the U.S. Department of State. I will be on a panel at the Institute of World Politics this Friday, October 4, from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm. FREE food and drinks! This school was so integral to my government pursuits in the workforce and definitely is the reason why I am where I am now. IWP had a huge impact on my life! RSVP (its free) and we will hopefully see you there! All are welcome!
Hey you Top Secret AU folk! This Friday, November 9, 5:30 - 7:30 is Open House at the Institute of World Politics. This is an independent graduate school that grooms people for the field of national security (intelligence, diplomacy, statecraft, and more). I interned there my spring semester of junior year, and it set me up BEAUTIFULLY for high level government work I had done since then. The school is ran by and founded by President Ronald Reagan's LEAD Soviet Advisor, John Lenczowski. Interns and students there learn HANDS - ON skills of what it truly takes to work in these fields, not all this theoretical, abstract, bologna!! 😉 Additionally, the school is known for being a hugeeee recruiting pool for the agencies. Career Services there finds a way to get you to where you want to be (IC, development agencies, security agencies, and MORE). It is a hidden gem of DC. Be there or be square. Danielle D'Amore and I are going, and I encourage you guys to come along! (Free sushi, wine, beer, and other food!!!) P.S. The community there is incredibly warm, welcoming, lovely, and supportive.
