Chairman Scott Statement on Passage of Fiscal Year 2021 Omnibus Package and COVID-19 Relief | House Committee on Education and Labor

🚨🚨🚨BREAKING:
The House just passed an end-of-year spending deal which reflects the priorities of House Democrats:
âś… Making college more affordable
âś… Repealing the ban on the use of federal funds for school integration
âś… Ending surprise medical bills

Congressman Bobby Scott: “While there is still much work to be done to crush this virus and push our economy into recovery, this bill is a positive step forward in supporting students, workers, and families across the country.”

Congress Poised To Simplify FAFSA, And Help People In Prison Go To College

Chairman Congressman Bobby Scott: "This bipartisan agreement is a significant step toward making higher education more affordable for millions of Americans. The package released today includes a wide range of provisions – secured by House Democrats – that will make federal grants and loans more accessible and more generous, particularly for our most vulnerable students. Congress has a responsibility to expand access to quality higher education, which remains the surest path to the middle class. While this is not the comprehensive overhaul of the Higher Education Act and there is still work to be done, this proposal will help millions of students. I’m pleased House Democrats secured these sweeping reforms on behalf of students across the country.”

In a bipartisan effort, Congress is close to a deal to simplify the federal financial aid form, or FAFSA, a major policy goal of retiring Republican senator Lamar Alexander.

How a GOP stimulus measure could weaken protections for workers, minorities and the disabled

The Senate Republicans’ liability proposals in the #COVID19 relief package has a little-known provision in it that would make it harder to keep workers safe and guarantee the civil rights of people of color and Americans with disabilities.

The measure would exempt businesses from tougher safety regulations if they are “substantially following” other, sometimes weaker government standards and guidance. That language worries critics.

A historic child abuse prevention bill is dying in the Senate | Opinion

The American people deserve to know why a historic bipartisan bill that protects children from abuse and neglect and passed the House more than 18 months ago is about to die in the Senate.

The bipartisan Stronger CAPTA was so widely praised that we expected Senate Leader Mitch McConnell to quickly bring the bill to the Senate floor. Instead, the Republicans are blocking it with a much weaker bill of their own.

#ICYMI: Instead of supporting underserved Americans during a pandemic, the Trump administration just finalized a sweeping set of rules that would allow for taxpayer-funded religious discrimination in some federally funded programs.

Inside Classrooms, The Differences Between Haves And Have-Nots Have Already Grown

#COVID19 is widening existing achievement gaps between the haves and have-nots. To effectively respond to the unprecedented learning loss, we must secure long-overdue relief so schools can provide high-quality public education for all students.

Federal Watchdog Finds Coal Safety Regulator Not Protecting Miners From Silica Dust

Decades of scientific evidence and real world experience have proven that exposure to respirable silica dust is deadly and MSHA has not sufficiently protected miners.

Congressman Bobby Scott: “MSHA should have acted sooner to issue a more protective regulation, however, miners cannot wait. In order to accelerate this process, my Committee is working on legislation to protect miners’ from silica exposure.”

The Mine Safety and Health Administration is not doing enough to protect coal miners from deadly silica dust, according to a new report from the Department of Labor’s Office of the Inspector General.

Healthcare workers file lawsuit against OSHA, accusing agency of failing to keep them safe

#BREAKING: Healthcare workers are suing OSHA because of the agency’s failure to keep workers safe during the pandemic.

Congressman Bobby Scott: "This administration has inexplicably failed to learn the lessons of H1N1, Ebola and now, COVID-19. The shelving of OSHA’s infectious disease standard and the agency’s failure to revive it during this pandemic show that they value anti-regulatory ideology over saving workers’ lives. This Committee has repeatedly called for OSHA to finalize the nearly completed infectious disease standard since January, and the House of Representatives has twice passed legislation to require a permanent standard only to meet stonewalling from Senate Republicans and the Trump administration."

The move is the latest example of the significant frustrations among labor advocates and Democrats over OSHA’s refusal to aggressively enforce workplace safety during the pandemic.

'A big concern': After we couldn't find students or faculty at college, agency scrambled to crack down

NEW: Documents released by the Committee show that ACICS, an accreditor with a shady history, realized that it was allowing a for-profit college with no faculty or students access to taxpayer money only AFTER press reports.

For years, Congressman Bobby Scott has questioned the Education Department’s decision to re-recognize ACICS because of their history of accrediting predatory for-profit colleges that defraud students and waste taxpayer money.

House Subpoenas DeVos Staff in Probe of For-Profit College

#Breaking: Today, the Committee subpoenaed Education Department officials to better understand ED’s role in the Dream Center collapse, a for-profit higher education company that actively defrauded students and taxpayers.

Congressman Bobby Scott: “Due to the Department’s obstruction, the Committee’s only available avenue to obtain an accurate understanding of the Department’s role in the Dream Center collapse is to pursue depositions of the knowledgeable Department officials under subpoena…The Committee will continue its oversight of this matter with the goal of getting answers about Dream Center’s collapse.”

Citing a U.S. News investigation, the House Education Committee is compelling testimony from staffers into agency involvement in a for-profit college’s defrauding of students.

NEW: A federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to strip SNAP benefits from more than 700,000 struggling Americans who are unemployed.

Last year, Congressman Bobby Scott wrote to Secretary Perdue opposing this rule because of the negative impact it would have on child hunger, a problem that has only grown worse since the start of the pandemic.

The CDC softened a report on meatpacking safety during covid. Democrats say they want to know why.

#BREAKING: On April 21, CDC investigators filed a rigorous report on the #COVID19 outbreak at a meat processing plant.

On April 22, those investigators were instructed to weaken the recommendation language in the report before it was released to the public.

Today, Democratic labor leaders sent letters to the CDC and U.S. Department of Agriculture demanding answers on why a critical workplace safety report was watered down.

Representatives from the House say they believe political pressure explains why the report was softened with words like “whenever possible,” and “if feasible.”

'Children Are Going Hungry': Why Schools Are Struggling To Feed Students

The P-EBT program that prevented MILLIONS of students from going hungry has already expired in the 33 states. Instead of passing the #HeroesAct which extends P-EBT through 2021, Senate GOP’s new #COVID19 proposal includes exactly $0 for child nutrition. Shameful.

School meals are the only meals some children get in a day. But during the pandemic, school feeding programs have been reaching fewer and fewer families.
