Why Are You a Voter? | Building a Better Future Beyond the 2020 Election
Our American tradition is steeped in fighting for our essentials and demanding a chance for all families to thrive. Our history is packed with moments of rising together and standing up when injustices come to light. In all of these movements, change didn’t happen without one essential of democracy: the right to vote. This election season, we have yet another powerful opportunity to band together to vote for public officials who will listen, empathize, and march alongside our communities. So, why are you a voter?

Protecting America’s Families During COVID-19 | #mitchbetterhavemymoney
The COVID-19 public health crisis has made it impossible to ignore the deep, structural flaws in the rules that govern our economy. Although all of us participate in the creation of wealth in our society, only a wealthy few capture these riches. The rest of us live one illness, one recession, or one piece of bad luck from economic ruin. And right now, Congress continues to debate if working Americans families deserve unemployment aid to survive. We know that this is no debate, and that’s why we banded together to demand community support. Partners in Washington, D.C. marched to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s home, demanding an extension of pandemic unemployment benefits that may soon be reduced or expire. As SPACEs In Action Executive Director @LaDon Love repeats: “the people united will never be defeated.” #mitchbetterhavemymoney

Rest in power, Congressman Lewis
Today, we mourn and celebrate the legacy of Congressman and former Community Change board member and friend, John Lewis. Through his lifelong activism, he made "good trouble" and empowered many to vote. In 2018, we honored Congressman Lewis at our 50th Anniversary celebration with the Champion of Public Service Award. His message was this: "the vote is precious. It is the most powerful non-violent instrument or tool we have in a democratic society, and we must use it!" Rest in power, Congressman Lewis. bit.ly/2ODAxw1
Joy in the Milestones: Reopening Our World Better Than We Left It
For the last several months, COVID-19 has upended all of our lives. For centuries, systemic racism and police violence remains a grave problem in America. In the wake of this double pandemic, Community Change Communications Video Fellow Maris Medina explores what it’s like to find pockets of joy in the milestones -- even during uncertain times. Her exploration reminds us of our interconnectivity and how by banding together, we will reopen the world better than we left it.
Standing Together Because Black Lives Matter
Every single state has stood in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, recognizing we are overdue on confronting our racist systems in the United States. Take a look at some of the scenes of protest, one of our most precious American values, as together we rise up. This is going to be a long road to justice, but if we keep educating ourselves, advocating for each other and organizing, we will make a better future for all of us.

Black killings spark Las Vegas families to speak out for loved ones slain by police
Some families in Las Vegas know the irreversible pain of losing a loved one to police brutality. In solidarity with protests across the country that have sparked from the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade, families left behind after by police homicide are speaking out again, leading the fight for change. On May 30, at Container Park in downtown Las Vegas, family members honored the memory of their stolen loved ones, utilizing the momentum of this moment to refocus attention on what we can do together to truly support Black Lives Matter.

My Frontline Family: Celebrating, Defending the Heroes Without Capes
At the onset of the novel coronavirus outbreak, healthcare workers were among the first to take action. These medical professionals were also among the first to report the capacity and supply shortages to do their jobs safely. Watch as Video Communications Fellow Maris Medina takes you through what it’s like to see her family at the frontlines of the fight against COVID-19.
This pandemic has shown us how much our working families are interconnected and essential. Unfortunately, not all frontline workers are as recognized or defended when we celebrate everyday heroes. From delivery truck drivers to grocery store workers, and from custodians to caregivers, we have so many heroes in our communities, using their superpowers even without protection or relief. We must join together. It is possible to keep organizing even while physically distancing, to flatten the curve AND make lasting change for a country where we ALL can be safe and protected. #WhatWeNeed #NationalSuperheroDay

What’s in My Name?
Names are full of meaning. Sometimes it’s part of a legacy passed down from our parents. Sometimes we assign meaning for ourselves. And when your name does not come easily on the tongues of other people, it can create moments of self-doubt. Community Change Communications Fellow Maris Medina explores what it’s like to have an uncommon name, and the journey she has traveled through identity, cultural understanding, and family relationships. How do you live up to your name?
