Looking back on a great month of September, we're posting videos from TEE and Summer Sports you may have missed all day. Let us know your favorite! We catch up with the Quadzilla, U.S. Army Veteran Johnny Holland, who gets care at the Richmond VA Medical Center and Durham VA Health Care System. He talks hitting golf balls and way more.

Patrick Ward sustained serious injuries while serving in the U.S. Navy, had 54 surgeries, and an amputation of his right leg above the knee. He recently wrote to #Sports4Vets..."You guys put me back together and then gave me back the world. At my age, with my leg, who would have thought this would be the thing that gave me a chance to start liking myself again," said Patrick. That 'thing' was rowing, and it's at the 2016 National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic where he experienced rowing for the first time. Patrick's been featured as a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' Veteran of the Day, serves as a member of the men's USA rowing team and fully expects to be in Japan for the Paralympic Games next summer.

Patrick, credits the national veterans sports and arts programs for giving him a restart, and his physical therapist, Rafael Hernandez, Miami VA Healthcare System, for pushing him harder than he could ever imagine. Up at 5 a.m./5 days a week, he travels 90 mins each way to train with ParaRowing coaches. There's no stopping this Paralympic hopeful. In February 2020, he set a new world record at the World Rowing Indoor Championship, clocking in at 2,000 meters in 8 min, 27.3 secs for his age group in indoor rowing.

He also participated in the #WinterSportsClinic and the #CreativeArtsFestival.

Sir, we salute you on this #WednesdayWisdom and thank you for motivating what we do and how we do it.

Check out this video clip of Patrick in action (hint: he's wearing the orange shirt).

Native American artists share culture through jewelry designs

"Morales has been recognized for his artistry, being named last year’s Red Earth Emerging Artist. In February, he won first in the (local) National Veterans Creative Arts Competition.

But jewelry is more than ornamentation or an ode to his Native American roots. The work brought him peace and a new chapter in life.

'My jewelry found a source to re-instill values in me that I lost,' Morales said." #Arts4Vets

Sioux and Cherokee tribal member Steven Morales found healing in the craft. Choctaw member Kristina Gentry offers a modern twist.

LiveWholeHealth: Tai Chi

Sometimes we get stuck in a rut which can lead to all kinds of health problems, both physical and emotional. Moving the body can be just the medicine we need. Tai Chi is a form of gentle movement that can improve muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and stress relief. It involves the coordination of breath, posture, awareness, visualization and focused movements. This exercise originated in China as a form of martial arts. Often called “meditation in motion,” Tai Chi offers benefits to both body and mind by slowing us down and allowing us to move the body with the breath. Many VA medical centers are offering Tai Chi classes both in person and online. Give yourself a 14-minute break from your routine with this Tai Chi video featuring Memphis VA Medical Center, Clinical Psychologist, Cynthia Mealer.

Some Friday inspiration from Navy Veteran Walter McKinley. Thank you Walter! Read more about Walter's poetry and how his writing has helped him with recovery. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=2447005732260684

This week on JB Speaks we feature, US Navy Veteran, Walter McKinley (Part 1). Poetry has always been a passion for him but after returning home from the Vietnam war, his writing took a new direction…writing became his therapy. Mr. McKinley uses poems like “I Am a Veteran” to inspire others to follow their own path to recovery. Every time he recites a poem, his mind goes to what could have happen but didn’t. He made it home, which inspires him even more to share his stories and pay tribute to fellow servicemembers who didn’t. #Veterans #JBVASpeaks

If you thought adaptive fitness was easy, here's U.S. Army Veteran Sandy "Ipo" Valdez to show you otherwise (and her full sets have been edited for brevity). Sandy, competing from home and representing VA Pacific Islands Health Care System, took gold in the Cascade Cup adaptive fitness challenge during last week's #NVWGatHOME. Box u turns, slam ball burpees and kettlebell lifts are just some of the exercises Veterans challenged themselves in during the Games.

Now it's on to New York City for the 40th National Veterans Wheelchair Games presented by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Paralyzed Veterans of America. #wheelchairgames

“Since I’ve had this,” he said, pointing to his first prosthesis, “I’ve downhill skied, curled and went sailing on Lake Michigan, all through SCI recreation. “We play bocce ball, we bowl, we do air rifles, archery, kayaking, bicycling – I do all of that.” #Sports4Vets

Jim Jacobi has had a lot thrown at him -- war, Agent Orange, triple bypass surgery and losing both legs. But this Vietnam Vet keeps it all positive.

Outstanding!

Hand salute LeToi Adams! She's one of five Milwaukee VA Vets competing in the Wheelchair Games at Home. Check her out knocking out 100 wall ball reps in 3 minutes! How many can you do? It's part of six crosslift-like challenges she must take on, including burpees and dumbbell deadlifts, all from her wheelchair. Adams is a U.S. Army Vet who became paralyzed from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Story on the Games coming soon.

I have provided inclusive home design services for other organizations supporting the disabled community throughout the U.S. I’m honored and available to help with those in need of adaptable design services
Will a pdf be available so we can see how we actually placed?
So much fun to participate this last week in the at home games. Had a lot of help with the waste paper basket, basket ball game. The grandchildren all took a turn.
Congratulations to all of my fellow NVGAG participants, I also would like to thank my team mate Retired Lt. Colonel Constance Rosser for hanging in there even when strava was not cooperating. Finally I'd like to thank the NVGAG Staff for putting together this at home virtual competition to replace the 2020 Madison NVGAG. Though there were some kinks in the gathering of correct data, the process brought out the best in those of us in Maryland who participated. I look forward to the 2021 NVGAG in Madison. This adjustment reminded me of the expedient methods of surviving during my tour in Vietnam. Sometimes we have to make it work no matter. Just get it done. It could save lives in the long run. I have attached a short video of some of my days leading up to my final 12k race....WELL I COULD NOT GET THE VIDEO ATTACHED...
will I be able to see my videos and pictures I submitted over the weekend. Pasqual Ramirez AKA Pancho
Is the NVGAG At Home Awards Ceremony tomorrow at 6pm EST?
I noticed my time at 12.5 miles, 31:15.
I am interested in competing in the 2021 NVGAG but am confused on location. I heard that the cancelled one for 2020 at Madison would be held in 2021 at Tampa, FL. Then I was told by someone at Madison that the 2021 games would be at Madison. Could someone clarify for me the location? I wanted to do the 2020 NVGAG but missed registration and then COVID-19 cancelled it anyway. Thanks.
https://www.facebook.com/donate/594030371219782/ If 100 people donate $5, I will have reached my goal to help support Dartmouth-Hitchcock.
I tried to find out how to do this and even emailed, and I keep getting emails saying there is still time.
