USAID/Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad

USAID/Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad USAID's Office of American Schools and Hospitals Abroad enhances U.S. foreign policy objectives by supporting overseas schools, hospitals, and libraries.
(4)

American Schools and Hospitals Abroad As authorized in the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, as amended, USAID’s American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) program provides assistance to schools, libraries, and medical centers outside the United States that serve as study and demonstration centers for American ideas and practices. ASHA’s grants help these institutions train future leaders in a wide variety of disciplines, support local and regional infrastructure to foster development, and cultivate positive relationships and mutual understanding among citizens of the United States and other nations. Since its inception in 1947, ASHA has assisted more than 272 institutions in 79 countries. ASHA currently manages a worldwide portfolio of over 100 awards, making 30-40 new awards each year. These awards support construction, renovation, and the procurement of scientific, medical, and educational equipment. As the use of ASHA funds is strictly limited, benefiting overseas institutions complement ASHA investments with support from additional sources. This allows ASHA to engage in sustainable partnerships that build capacity and catalyze innovation. ASHA directly contributes to U.S. foreign policy and public diplomacy objectives by fostering democracy, tolerance, and innovation. The networks of educational and medical institutions supported by ASHA offer opportunities to access quality education and health services in areas of the world where often few or none exist. ASHA’s partners have educated successive generations of global citizens, deepening their understanding of American values and their commitment to democracy and critical thinking.

Mission: How to Apply for an USAID/ASHA Grant USAID/ASHA makes grants via an annual, competitive awards process. Each fall, it posts an Annual Program Statement (APS) on grants.gov to solicit new applications. The FY 2015 APS was posted on October 8, 2014, and applications will be accepted until April 24, 2015. To be eligible for an ASHA award, applicants must meet a number of criteria, including the establishment of a partnership between an overseas institution and a sponsoring U.S. organization. ASHA funds generally support construction, renovation, or the procurement of commodities, such as scientific, medical, and educational equipment. The maximum available award in FY 2015 is $2,000,000. This is a worldwide program. http://www.usaid.gov/work-usaid/business-funding/grant-programs/american-schools-and-hospitals-abroad/how-apply-asha http://www.grants.gov/custom/viewOppDetails.jsp?oppId=268248

Revolutionary MRI device images preemies right in the NICU

This past fall, the Shaare Zedek Medical Center became the first in the world to utilize a bedside MRI specifically designed for infants. Embrace allows doctors to scan newborn preterm babies for brain injuries which could impact their development and all without moving them from the NICU. https://www.israel21c.org/revolutionary-mri-device-images-preemies-right-in-the-nicu/

Silent and safe, Embrace eliminates MRI dangers so medical staff can use it as often and as easily as they use a blood-pressure gauge or thermometer.

The American School of Tangier was awarded an ASHA grant to add a wing to their school. Before work could begin, AST had to relocate these 2 40+ year old palm trees. In total, the process took 6 hours, 1 crane, 1 bulldozer, and a half a dozen people. The trees are now in their new home (pictured here) in front of the school, and construction on the new wing is underway!

St. Boniface Hospital's new Surgical Center in Haiti

USAID/ASHA Director Anne Dix had the pleasure of attending the inauguration of the ASHA-funded Surgical Center at the St. Boniface Hospital in Haiti. In 2014 and 2015, the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation received ASHA grants to construct and equip a surgical center, residence facility, training room, medical library, and Tuberculosis isolation ward. The St. Boniface Hospital surgical center is a first-class American-styled ward, which will reach the most needy residents. The partnership between St. Boniface Hospital and ASHA facilitated the development of health care services in Haiti, and the new surgical center will advance best medical teaching and practices.

The Surgical Center has been operating since November of 2016, and serves about 200 patients each month. It is the only fully functioning surgical center on Haiti's southern peninsula that provides care to all patients regardless of their ability to pay. The new additions to the hospital allow St. Boniface to extend quality care to over three million people in an undeserved and highly vulnerable part of Haiti.

To learn more about the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation and the work that they are doing with ASHA grants, you can visit their website here.
