Hi Fellow Legionnaires

Virginia and I have been in Florida since the middle of May.
As some may know, I had to missing the DC Dept Convention. Regrettably, I acquired an infection that required hospitalization with two weeks of home antibiotic infusions! The source of the the infection is an interesting story and I will be happy to share in a private conversation. You can email me at [email protected].
I continue to support the Dept and work with the Commander on prior issues involving his tenure.

All the best,
Jon Buth, Past Dept Commander

Veterans Day In Washington DC

Today was spent with Post 8 of the DC Dept with a Memorial Service plus Wreath Presentation at 11:00 AM in Folger Park across from the Post Home on 224 D St, SE. This is an Annual Event with the Old Guard from Ft Myer Posting the Colors and performing the National Anthem with a medley of patriotic music. The guest speaker was M/G Thomas Shephard from Pentagon Personel. A fantastic lunch was served by Frank's Gourmet Catering Service of Lanham, MD. A personal recommendation of the Post Adjutant that exceeded all expectations.

At 12:30, during Lunch, Commander Tilden announced to beaming audience filled with patriotic pride and stomachs full of wonderful food that all was not done.

Wait there was more! The Mayor of Washington DC had called a Press Conference for 2:00 PM at Post 8 in this very place.

The purpose: Announce a Homeless Scholarship Program administered by the Veterans Office of the Mayor and funded by the Warnken Fund and the Outreach Foundation (matching funds). This fund will target homeless veterans only.

The audience was invited to stay as the advance party started to set up. The dinning room began to be transformed.

Soon it was prepared for the Mayor and party as distinguished visitors began to arrive to include DC Council Members, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes, retired council members, and finally the Mayor.

The caterer continued to serve prime rib and salmon while an array of speeches were delivered.

One thing is clear: No Veteran should be homeless.

We can salute our Mayor for taking the time to address this need and fitting Veterans into his schedule.

Jon Buth

Today is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Day. PTSD affects millions of Americans, including many of our troops and veterans. Let’s work together to end the stigma of mental illness and encourage our loved ones in need to seek help.

Here is the picture from the National Press Club Post 20 about the exhibit to promote the founding of the post and, of course, membership.
The display is in the lobby of the National Press Club highlighting the Post's chief's founding father, General John Pershing.
The "founding of Post 20" will remain on display for the remainder of June.

Dear District of Columbia Legion Comrades, My name is Warren Hunt. I live in Michigan, and am a life member of both the VVA (Chapter 35, Toledo, Ohio) and the VFW. I am also a retired active duty Army E-7, beginning with service in Vietnam in 68-69 with the First Infantry Division. In 2018 I published a memoir, “Reflections on the Vietnam War: A Fifty-Year Journey,” an overview of what the Vietnam Era looked like to me. It covers the span of time from when I was in high school, through my Army service in Nam, culminating with my attendance at the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. in 1982. The book is available at amazon.com in paperback as well as Kindle format. A link to my book’s website is attached here: www.facebook.com/rvw50. This memoir has been included by Bowling Green State University and Lourdes University as part of the reading list for their classes on the Vietnam War. In addition, it has received positive reviews from well-known literary publications, including Manhattan Book Review, Publishers Weekly/Book Life, and the VVA Veteran: Books in Review (Henry Zeybel). In April of 2018 an excerpt from my book appeared in a special commemorative issue of USA Today: “Echoes from Vietnam.” “Reflections on the Vietnam War: A Fifty-Year Journey” has been well-received by readers; including Vietnam veterans and their family members. Many non-veterans, especially younger people, have also found it enlightening as an aid to gaining a broader perspective on the Vietnam War era. I am now in the process of sharing my work with local veterans organizations; not to make money, but because I have been told I should share it by so many people who find it an inspiring and informative read. Best wishes to your post members for a safe and pleasant summer. Sincerely, Warren Hunt Vietnam 68-69
