Commitment, one of our three Core Values, is the foundation of our unity and esprit de corps. We, as #Marines, are committed to each other. We are committed to training one another, leading one another and operating side-by-side to one another. When times are tough, we stand for one another and pick each other up - even when it could be to our final resting place. This is not just what we do. This is WHO WE ARE. In every clime and place, our commitment to each other is what carries us. Semper Fidelis.

Warfighter Weekly: 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion

The U.S. Marine Corps is always evolving, but the foundation of who we are never changes. We are warriors. Our professionalism and discipline is what gives us the edge against our enemy. Warfighting is a part of our culture and we will continue to cultivate this spirit. With every push kick and pugil stick to the head, we learn, we develop and we grow stronger as force. As a Marine Corps, we fight and we win. There are no other options. Semper Fidelis.

I recently joined a panel discussion with my fellow service senior enlisted leaders to discuss service priorities and host a Q&A session with the current Keystone class. Training and education is key to career progression, and the best educators are those who experienced both leadership and followership positions at the highest level. The Keystone course is provided by the National Defense University to educate command senior enlisted leaders who are slated to serve at a general officer level and joint command headquarters.

The Commandant and I were proud to meet with the Marines and Sailors serving in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. The readiness and steady-state posture of this team is a testament to their leadership and professionalism.

"...generate a comprehensive, yet succinct and understandable hierarchy of orders and directives that define roles and responsibilities within the enterprise." -Gen. David H. Berger, Commandant's Planning Guidance.

The U.S. Marine Corps created a new SNCO promotion warrant that states the leadership roles and responsibilities of ranks Staff Sergeant through Sergeant Major. Great work to the team of senior enlisted #Marines from across the Corps who identified the necessity for a defined institutional understanding and created the new warrant with clarity. A date which will live in infamy

On this 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, we remember those 2,403 service members and civilians who died and the thousands more who were wounded. The Marines and Sailors fought with courage against a prepared enemy. As President Roosevelt called the nation to war, we also recognize those who stepped up to the call to defend the nation. Later in the month through the coming years, our #Marines and #Sailors took a fight to the Imperial Japanese military in the Pacific that ended victoriously and forged a legacy of our Navy and Marine Corps Team.

In the words of President Roosevelt, December 7, 1941, will always be “a date which will live in infamy.”

On this Thanksgiving Day, let’s uphold the timeless traditions of giving thanks and showing appreciation. Connect with your fellow #Marines and #Sailors, and enjoy your time with your families and friends. We’ve built a legacy of fighting, winning and doing it anytime when called upon. We’re victorious because of our esprit de corps - our unity. And behind us every step of the way are our families who have shown us nothing but support. I am grateful and thankful to be a part of this Marine Corps family. I am humbled to be your Sergeant Major. From the Black family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving. Semper Fidelis.

Part of retaining the best is providing them with the education they need to support warfighting operations. For our enlisted Marines, Senior Enlisted Professional Military Education is designed to equip master sergeants and first sergeants with the critical thinking and adaptability skills necessary to function at operational and strategic levels of war.

Keep pushing #Marines, stay engaged, and look for the next target.

Mission first, Marines always. Semper Fi!

Talent Management starts at every level of leadership. I had the opportunity to share some of my leadership insights and experience with the new lieutenants of The Basic School Fox Company. The Basic School trains and educates newly commissioned officers in the high standards of professional knowledge, esprit-de-corps, and leadership to prepare them for duty as company grade officers in the operating forces, with particular emphasis on warfighting skills required of a rifle platoon commander.

On this 246th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps, we honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the Global War on Terror. I was honored to lay a wreath at the grave sites of the following Marines: Staff Sgt. Taylor Hoover, a Marine who was killed in the recent attack in Kabul, Afghanistan. Sgt. Maj. Joseph Ellis, who was killed in action during his third deployment to Iraq. Maj. Megan McClung, a Marine public affairs officer who was killed in action during combat operations in Iraq. Rest in peace, Marines. Semper Fidelis.

246th Marine Corps Birthday Message

We’re an organization who stand fiercely proud of what we do every day in service to our nation. When we have the opportunity to do so, we celebrate with pride and we let it be known that this is what we do – we “epitomize those qualities which are legacy.” As we celebrate the 246th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps, we honor and pay tribute to those who have died wearing our cloth, those who have been wounded and carry the scars of battle and the families of those who carry the burden of both, those who are deployed and those readying to deploy. To the few and the proud, past and present, Happy Birthday and Semper Fidelis, #Marines!

The Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps published Talent Management 2030 today, which is designed to recruit individuals with the right talents, match those talents to organizational needs and incentivize the most talented and high performing individuals to remain with the organization. Bottom line, it’s about continuing to build a more lethal warfighter and a more capable fighting force. You can read the entire plan here: https://t.co/PXVXw5xvxC?amp=1
#TalentManagement

Today, the Commandant of the Marine Corps released his plan for Talent Management. As a people-centric organization, fighting and winning our nation's battles depends upon our ability to recruit, develop and retain the best Marines we can. We need systems that identify Marines' talents, develop those talents into skills and aptitudes, and assigns them billets and duties where they can apply their strengths to best support the mission.

As #CyberSecurityMonth comes to a close, this is a reminder to #BeCyberSmart year round. The threat is real, Marines. Remain vigilant against cyber-threats and stay up-to-date on cyber security. Semper Fidelis.

This is the final week of #CyberSecurityAwarenessMonth, but you should always try to do your part and #BeCyberSmart. The habits we form today affect the Marine Corps’ ability to fight and win in the future – and that includes the battle in the cyber domain. Remain vigilant against cyber threats year-round, and ensure your unit and personal training prioritize cybersecurity.

Today I spoke at the Tactical Athlete Human Factors Summit at Auburn University College of Education for a conversation on #HumanPerformance. Our goal here was the same as each other’s: to maximize the performance potential of each one of our members through developing, maintaining, and improving programs that support the physical, mental, social, and spiritual fitness of our warfighters throughout their entire careers.

In order to deliver on this commitment, we need to invest in our #Marines – from the moment they enter recruit training or OCS to the moment they leave the Corps – and foster a lifecycle management program for our warfighters as comprehensive as any next generation technology, state of the art vehicle or weapon system. The time is now. Semper Fidelis.

On this day in 1915, the actions of SgtMaj Dan Daly, a gunnery sergeant then, earned him his second Medal of Honor for his actions with the fifteenth company of Marines at Fort Liberte, Haiti.

“After dark on the evening of 24 October, while crossing the river in a deep ravine, the detachment was suddenly fired upon from three sides by about 400 Cacos concealed in bushes about 100 yards from the fort. The Marine detachment fought its way forward to a good position, which it maintained during the night, although subjected to a continuous fire from the Cacos. At daybreak the Marines, in three squads, advanced in three different directions, surprising and scattering the Cacos in all directions. Gunnery Sergeant Daly fought with exceptional gallantry against heavy odds throughout this action.”

This is the legacy we as warfighters and leaders commemorate. Honor, courage, and commitment through all things.

Technology is now indispensable to our work, and our adversaries know that. Not only do we have to physically protect our devices, but we must guard our minds from falling victim to spear phishing and whaling attacks.

Look for the Indicators.

- You may get a “work” email from someone you do not personally know to your personal email account, which may have been compromised from an email marketing firm.
- Getting a file or a link with an unusual file extension from a seemingly legitimate source may be an attempt to get you to download malware or capture your credentials.

Enact the Countermeasures.

- If you are unsure about som**hing you received, contact the sender via another means of communication to confirm prior to clicking on a link or attachment.
- Look for improper grammar, strange changes in font mid-sentence, misspelled words, blurry images, or overly generic messages.
- Ensure your device has the most up to date software at all times.

#Marines should always pay attention to their operating environment. If you detect a change in your baseline, do your part to #BeCyberSmart.

Semper Fidelis. #USMC

Sir, I am a retired Marine. For almost 5 years I have been attempting to get a DD214 for a Marine friend of mine (who gave up). He has old orders, pay stubs, awards, everything. He has tried everything, and so have I, even contacting retired General officers to assist.... All this Marine wants is a DD214 so he can get a USMC licence plate. Sad that he, nor I, nor retired Generals can get ANYONE to do anything other than lip service and no help. I know you can get us to the correct person. Thank you Sir. Sergeant Major, Why is this allowed to occur, yet I lost my rank and career when I asked for help after I was injured by the severe neurological and neuropsychiatric side effects of Lariam (Mefloquine) after I was ordered to take it? Seems a little odd that enlisted get the raw end of the deal while the officers walk around like they are above the law. Feel free to contact me to discuss whenever you'd like.
